The product, in the report: Shark press and refresh hand steamer

I was using our shark press and refresh to dewrinkle some shirts just as I have done many times before. As I was holding the steamer, steam seemed to explode from all angles of the handled. I immediately dropped the steamer and began to run my hand under cold water as my husband ran in and unplugged the steamer. Two fingers sustained painful burns.

Made Apr 23, 2016, sent to the company May 2, 2016, published by CPSC May 16, 2016

The product, in the report: Shark® Press & Refresh Fabric Steamer Garment Care System. Includes Bristle Brush Frame, Lint Brush Frame, Upholstery/Delicate Frame, Delicate Steam Bonnet, Upholstery Steam Bonnet, 3 Velcro® Clips and the Vertical Press Pad. Model #GS500N 11 by Intertec 120544

I was using Shark Press & Refresh Fabric Steamer Garment Care System for couple of months. I use distilled or spring bottled water and clean it on regular basis. On the April 18th 2016, I was steaming my clothes as usually and all of the sudden the steamer stopped and making like explosion sound released the stem in a (steam bomb) right in my right hand. I dropped the steamer, run to take the plug out of the wall, before it got on fire and run to the bathroom under cold water. I was having my hand in a cup with ice and water all day long and every time I took it out I was in excruciating pain. I had a blisters on my fingers and part of my palm, my hand was very red. The pain of the burned skin went away after 2 days and many times of zinc oxide applications/pain killers but my nerves which got injured still hurt horribly. The injury got evaluated as post-burn neuropathy. As a massage therapist I will be out of work at least for 3 weeks. I was very fortunate, that my face was far away from the machine. I could be blind by now. The company should warn buyers about the failure possibility of the machine and sell it with goggles and a glow. Shark Press & Refresh Fabric Steamer Garment Care System -machine with surprises.

The product, in the report: Shark Press & Refresh clothes steamer, metallic purple color, kind of heavy, has no handle--you just hold onto the neck of the steamer

I was steaming my clothes with a Shark Press & Refresh clothes steamer. The model number is G550011. While steaming as I normally do every day, the steamer exploded with a loud pop of steam and the neck of the steamer got extremely hot and burned my fingers. It was not the steam that burned my fingers. I believe that the pressure of the steam caused the steamer to rise to an unsafe temperature. I was just holding onto the neck of the steamer like usual. When this happened, I put my hand in cold water and later on ice, but my hand burned for over an hour. Blisters were forming. I dropped by a doctor’s office to get some relief. Because I was stressing out, I forgot to take a picture of my hand. However, I have a picture of the skin peeling off after a couple of weeks. I left a review on amazon.com to warn people of the danger of this steamer. I see from the comments that this has also happened to a few other people. Also, this steamer leaks water. This item should be recalled. Using a steamer in the normal way should not injure people.
