The product, in the report: The product is a Mickey Mousethemed electric waffle maker designed to cook a single large waffle in the shape of Mickey Mouse. The unit features a clamshell-style design with a top and bottom cooking plate that close together. The exterior casing is primarily red plastic and includes a black metal edge that runs around the perimeter of the unit. The waffle maker is marketed with prominent Disney/Mickey Mouse imagery and is visually appealing to children, although it is labeled as a household kitchen appliance. The unit does not include a latch or locking mechanism to secure the lid in either the open or closed position. When opened, the lid does not remain upright on its own and can move freely. The product is powered by an electric cord and is intended for countertop use. Warning text is present on the side of the unit in small lettering, and safety information is included in the instruction manual. The model number shown on the product is DCM-12, and the manufacturer is Select Brands.
We experienced two separate injury incidents involving the same Mickey Mouse waffle maker, Model DCM-12, which was received as a Christmas gift.
First Incident Burn Injury: While the waffle maker was closed and actively cooking on the kitchen counter, our young son observed us making waffles. The product is brightly colored and prominently features Mickey Mouse imagery, which immediately drew his attention. He excitedly said Mickey! and reached toward the waffle maker.
Although the unit was closed, he made contact with the black metal edge that surrounds the exterior casing. The surface was extremely hot, and he immediately pulled his hand back and began crying in visible distress. He sustained a burn to his thumb and repeatedly stated that he just wanted to play with Mickey.
At the time of the incident, there was no prominent or clearly visible warning on the exterior of the product indicating that the outer metal surfaces become dangerously hot during use. The warning text present on the side of the unit is small and not easily noticeable, particularly given the child-appealing design of the product.
Second Incident Pinch Injury: In a separate incident involving the same waffle maker, my wife sustained a finger injury caused by the design of the clamshell lid. The lid does not appear to have any hinge tension, resistance mechanism, or locking feature to keep it open when raised. As a result, the top clamshell moves freely and can fall closed unexpectedly.
While the unit was turned off, the lid was in an open position and was inadvertently contacted, causing it to swing downward and close suddenly. Her fingers were caught between the top and bottom clamshell plates, resulting in a painful pinch injury.
There was no warning in the instructions or on the packaging indicating that the lid does not remain open on its own or that it presents a pinch hazard when open.
