  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 13, 2022, sent to the company Jan 18, 2022, published by CPSC Feb 1, 2022

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Waffle Maker, double flip (one upper and one lower iron, rotates to make two waffles at once. Lida open up to accept batter and then closed and are engaged forward to lock closed. The irons are about 7 1/2 inches in Diameter. The appliance is about 8 “ width x 5” ht. x 13” long. Model WMD 200 B (120Volt, 60 Hz, 1200 Watt, UL listed

I purchased a Black and Decker Double Flip Waffle Maker WMD 200 B from JCPenny on Nov. 26, 2021. I used the waffle maker for the 3rd. time at my Son in Law and Daughter’s house. on Dec. 22, 2021. I was at a gathering of 6 people including myself. I was seated at a card table with the waffle maker. The other 5 people were around in front of me. When the light indicated the waffle maker was ready, I put a normal amount of batter in the waffle maker, engaged the latch, waited 10 seconds, rotated it, an added a similar amount of batter to the empty side, and engaged the latch. About 1 and a half minutes later (time uncertain), The top of the upper chamber blew open and I felt a force hit my chest. The waffle maker lid had broken where it meets the rotation part of the waffle maker. The rim of the waffle maker didn’t have any excess batter. Using a rag, I was able to turn the waffle maker and remove the lower waffle. We were all shocked to say the least! Later, after I removed my shirt, I was stunned to see shards of plastic fall from my shirt with some still embedded in my shirt. If I had had the waffle maker on a kitchen counter, a higher height, the blast would have hit me in the face. The Incident occurred on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021 ~ 5:30 pm. In Tucson AZ. I believe this was a dangerous event and warrants immediate attention

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Double Flip Waffle Maker, Black

I was making blue berry waffles. I made the batter with blue berries. Before plugging the Black & Decker Double Flip (with duel cooking plates) product to the outlet to use for the first time, I read the product instruction book thoroughly, including the safeguards section, season the waffle irons as instructed, then wiped away any excess oil. I plugged in the product, then when the green indicator light turned on, I poured the first amount (3/4 cup) as directed in the instructions. I locked the product as designed and instructed. After 10 seconds (per the instructions), I turned it over to pour the batter on the other side. I locked the product as instructed, waiting 10 seconds, before turning it over to the side with the first cooking waffle. The first cooking waffle started to steam. At about one minute and a half later, it started to make a noise and was steaming very much. I backed away and the device exploded and jumped off the edge of the counter hitting the floor. No one was injured. It unplugged itself when it fell to the ground. I left it alone until it cooled off. I took two picture of the area shortly after the product exploded. I noticed that the plastic lock and one of the two handles snapped off and was left on the counter. I took additional pictures of the product after it cooled.

The submitter is reporting the grill for posing a burn injury. She believes the bottom of the grill should have rubber stoppers to keep it from moving easily.

She was making pancakes and states that the grill went sliding when she used a plastic spatula to flip the pancake. She said she’s thankful that it did not fall on the floor or injure anyone.

She contacted the firm and notified them of the incident. She also asked if the grill comes with rubber stoppers to place on the bottom but the Rep. said it did not.

She said it was the first time she used the grill and she has not used it since.

She either purchased it from Walmart or Amazon.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Belgian Waffle Maker Model WMB500

This product was purchased last christmas 2010. It has a date code of 031X0. The hinges on the unit keep breaking, even before I use the waffle maker.

I contacted Black & Decker through their web site and received a new set of hinges.

Then they broke so here is my second email to them...

“Hi, I received the replacement hinges a few days ago. I put them in, open and closed the unit a few times, it seemed fine. Then I went to use the unit and a hinge broke. They do not seem to be able to support the weight of the top lid... or maybe they are getting caught on something inside and breaking. i request some more replacement hinges and better quality hinges! If they keep breaking, then I will request a replacement with one that will not break. Thank you!”

This is my third and last email to them... i did not get a response or new hinges...

    sent 3-29-2011

“I received the second set of hinges some time ago... By the time I went to use the waffle maker, the hinges were already broken. All the hinges are breaking in the same spot. This is dangerous as the first time that I was able to use it,the hinges broke as I was using it, the top and bottom seperated and luckily I did not burn myself. The new hinges just break before I am able to use the product. The directions also say I am able to stand the unit upright, but the top and bottom open and then falls down. Needless to say, better hinges are needed... maybe metal ones that will not break. HELP !!!! I would like to use the product !!!! Are there any technicians that will research my problem? Please send new hinges... again.... Regards, [REDACTED]”

I would like to report this problem and get the Belgian Waffle Make off the shelves until they get them fixed.
