  1. No one hurt

Made Aug 28, 2018, sent to the company Sep 19, 2018, published by CPSC Oct 3, 2018

The product, in the report: Toaster

The consumer indicates that the toaster was turned on when it spontaneously ignited. The consumer unplugged the unit. The consumer notes that there were damages to the kitchen cabinets, the hood above the oven range, the kitchen ceiling, and the wall behind the cabinets.

06/20/2018 - The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative she spoke to filed a claim under Case Number: [REDACTED]; the consumer was also informed that she would be receiving a replacement toaster. The consumer sent the Manufacturer the toaster.

08/27/2018 – The consumer contacted the Manufacturer to inquire about the status of her claim; she was informed that it was denied because their technician could not replicate a fire. Because of this reason, the Manufacturer would not be covering the damages the consumer reported.

The consumer indicates that, prior to the incident, the toaster was used two to three times per week.

  2. No one hurt

Made Dec 26, 2014, sent to the company Jan 6, 2015, published by CPSC Jan 21, 2015

The product, in the report: White 2-slice toaster with plastic exterior. Had the standard push lever to depress bread and start toasting. Had red letters Sunbeam on end with push lever and on one side.

The Sunbeam model 3831 toaster was plugged in but empty and the toaster lever was not pushed down. Several people were in the kitchen when the toaster suddenly burst into flames. The house circuit breakers did not activate. The hot fire continued to burn after the toaster was unplugged and was extinguished by covering it with a wet towel. The plate on the bottom showed that this was a 750 W toaster made in China. the counter was not damaged but the toaster had a burned hole about 2-3 inches across and 2 inches deep. The hole was near the bottom of a side; the edge of the hole was about 2 inches from where the power cord entered the toaster. The bottom and sides of the hole had burned plastic. I could not see any wiring in the hole.

This toaster was given to us by a houseguest about 2 years ago. She now lives in Argentina. It may have been purchased used. This toaster has never jammed or had any problem. We cleaned out the crumbs regularly. This fire could have burned down our house if we had not been present.

The product, in the report: Sunbeam two slice toaster black. Order number on sunbeam website is 003910-100-000. It costs about $17.99

I put two pieces of bread in the toaster. It was set on medium. I went into another room and the den, kitchen and living room were filled with smoke. Three inch flames were shooting up from the toaster. It scorched the bottom of my kitchen cabinets. If I had not taken it outside and hosed it down, the house would’ve caught on fire. I had just used the toaster 5 hours earlier and it was fine.
