The product, in the report: Back To Basics 2-Slice Egg & Muffin Toaster, Model # TEM-500. Black.
I was getting ready for bed around 9:30pm when I heard a loud noise in the kitchen. It sounded like static coming from a radio. I went into the kitchen and instantly smelled a strong electrical burning smell. I walked around the kitchen and determined it was coming from the egg poacher on my Back To Basics Egg & Muffin 2-Slice Toaster, Model # TEM-500. I unplugged it immediately and went to pick it up to move it, but the front portion (the egg poacher) was too hot to touch. It was still hot a 1/2 hour later. I waited another hour and it had cooled off enough for me to remove it from the house. It’s important to note that the elapsed time from when noise started to when I unplugged it was under two minutes, so it heated up extremely fast. It was obvious that it would’ve started a fire if I had not been home to unplug it right away. I did contact Back to Basics and report the issue and they told me the device is not meant to be left plugged in and that they have not heard other reports of this problem, however, I googled the issue and was able to find other complaints about the toaster either catching fire, or having a strong odor, loud noise and smoke. Some of those complaints can be found here: http://www.fixya.com/support/t2516135-paula_deen_toaster_egg_poacher_caught They go all the way back to July of 2009. One of those complaints listed this website as the official goverment product reporting system, so that is how I came about reporting the issue. Back To Basics has asked me to send them the toaster back (they said they will email me a shipping label, which they have not done yet) and they will send me a new one, but I don’t want to send it back if you need it for testing and I don’t necessarily want to use the new one if this is a common problem, as it does not seem like an isolated incident according to other web complaints. I have two dogs at home and I would hate to think what could have happened if I had not been home when this happened.
