The product, in the report: Cuisinart 4 Slice Stainless Steel Toaster Model CPT-14WM
On 6/30/2026 at 0900 I was in my bedroom when the fire alarm went off from the kitchen. I ran and found that the Cuisinart Toaster was on fire. A six inch flame was coming up from the fourth opening on the right and the toaster was plugged in. I disconnected the toaster and poured water to turn off the flame. This worked fast and then I proceeded to clear out all of the smoke from the kitchen and living room with fans, vents and open windows and doors. I am lucky to have been home when this occurred. There was nothing pressed or on and other than being plugged in, there was no source of fire. The fumes were very strong and even though I opened up the windows, my throat became irritated and itchy. After an hour the smell was almost gone.

The product, in the report: cuisinart cpt-640p1
I purchased a Cuisinart cpt-640p1 toaster from Kohl’s for a Christmas gift for my teenage daughter, yes, she wanted us to get a new one, LOL.
We have an older model from Cuisinart almost exactly like this one and no issues. This toaster on the #4 setting was so hot that she was startled when she touched the case. Our current toaster, almost identical, is warm to the touch. This one doesn’t seem to have insulated sides/metal and could truly burn someone, especially a child or elderly person.
Returning today.
Burn hazard and shouldn’t be available. It retails for $90 and that is a lot for a toaster.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart CPT-320P1 Compact Stainless 2-Slice Toaster, Brushed Stainless purchased on 9/22/2019, not used until 10/15/2020 (moved to new house and opened new toaster) Model CPT-320P1
After only 6 months of use, our toaster caught on fire today. My husband put a slice of bread in to toast and went off to wash his hands. Lo and behold, the smoke detector alerted him to a fire in the kitchen -- the toast pop-up mechanism failed and the toaster was smoking.

Hurt, no treatment Made May 12, 2021, sent to the company May 14, 2021, published by CPSC May 28, 2021
The product, in the report: It’s a Cuisinart TOB-40, serial number 20020. Picture attached. Toaster Model TOB-40
Got a major electrical shock from a Cuisinart TOB-40N style toaster. I had owned this toaster for many years, probably at least 8 years. A few weeks ago I got a small shock when I turned the knob to toast, and I should have known something was wrong. But it was small enough I thought maybe it was static. But then two weeks later, I went to toast a bagel after coming back from an exercise. As soon as I pressed the start button, I got a major major electric shock in my left index finger that knocked me back about 4 ft. Never in my life had I ever experienced anything like that. Felt like the electric chair. Super scary. It tripped the circuit breaker in the kitchen and none of the other counter appliances worked until I reset the outlets later. While the breaker was tripped, I unplugged the thing and threw it in the basement. There must be some kind of internal electrical short or something. Not sure if it matters, but I had just finished a workout and was pretty sweaty on my hands and feet (wasn’t wearing shoes). Regardless, I don’t know how they design a high wattage toaster without a 3-prong grounding plug. My model only had a regular 2 prong plug. I’m really angry that this poor design could have killed me. Never will I buy a Cuisinart product again.

No incident, no one hurt Made Dec 4, 2020, sent to the company Dec 30, 2020, published by CPSC Jan 14, 2021
The product, in the report: Cuisinart 2-Slice Classic Style Metal Toaster. Brushed Stainless Steel. Model GB-CPT160P1ESP 15CE015765
Product: Cuisinart 2-Slice Classic Metal Toaster Model: GB-CPT160P1ESP 15CE015765 Purchased online from Kohl’s, received the product on 11/24/2020
Timeline: 11/24/2020 – Received the product via UPS Shipment 11/27/2020 – Tested the product before giving it to adult family member. Testing the toaster raised safety and hazard issues. 11/27/2020 – Created and posted a 1-star review on Kohl’s website 11/30/2020 – Called Kohl’s customer service # to report issues, was given a full refund, safety issues were raised to Kohl’s customer service manager. 11/30/2020 – Called Cuisinart Customer Service # to report issues. The customer service representative told me that someone from corporate would call me within 48 to 72 hours. As of 12/4/2020, No one from the Cuisinart Brand management or Conair management has contacted me to discuss the product’s safety issues.
Safety Issues: 1) Product seems to be drawing too much electrical current to not work on a GFI receptacle. 2) Product isn’t designed or insulated to keep the sides cool/warm to the touch, like predecessor older models 3) Product can cause significant burns to your skin or possibly cause a fire to occur.
I’ve recently purchased this new 2-Slice Classic Brushed Stainless metal toaster (model CPT-160) for my son’s college apartment. Before giving it to my son, I plugged it into my kitchen GFI receptacle to test it..... the same outlet that my current older 4-slice Cuisinart toaster is plugged into. With the toasting setting on 3, this new toaster wouldn’t work on a GFI receptacle, the toaster levers wouldn’t stay down, and the toaster would not function. I tested the toaster on several GFI receptacles throughout the house and the toaster would not function. I then tested it on a non-GFI receptacle, and the levers engaged, and the toaster worked. I then noticed a horrible chemical odor emitting from the toaster as it was being used for the very first time. After the toasting cycle was completed, I picked up the toaster and moved it back to the kitchen counter. I then noticed how incredibly hot the toaster’s outer metal shell was, and this was holding it from the bottom. After placing the toaster on the counter, I felt the bottom portion of the sides and they were too hot to keep my hands there. I then did a quick finger touch to the top portion of the sides and it was extremely hot.... like a hot skillet, and if I kept my finger there long enough, I would have gotten burns on my skin. Keep in mind that this was the sides of the toaster, not the top. With my current older 4-slice version of this Cuisinart Classic Style toaster, you can safely touch the sides of the toaster during and after the toasting cycle.... you can actually hold your hand pressed to the sides near the top without getting burned, as the older version, model CPT-180 only gets moderately warm to the touch. It seems to me that this newly manufactured toaster, model CPT-160 is drawing too much electrical current to not work on a GFI receptacle and isn’t designed or insulated to keep the sides cool/warm to the touch during the toasting cycle, and the outer stainless steel metal shell is noticeably thinner compared to my older 4-slice Classic Style Cuisinart toaster. Over the past 20+ years, I’ve bought two Cuisinart 4-slice Classic Style metal toasters and was always happy with the quality of this Cuisinart toaster. The predecessor, older versions were well-made. This new 2-slice Cuisinart Classic Style metal toaster, model CPT-160 can cause significant burns to your skin or possibly cause a fire to occur. This newly manufactured product should have failed many safety tests, in my opinion, and should be removed from the market immediately. I can only assume that Conair Corporate and Cuisinart Brand management has decided to cheapen their products now, use lessor quality of materials, cut corners in the engineering and safety processes to reduce costs, and produce more revenue.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart two slice motorized toaster, model CPT-420
Cuisinart CPT-420 Toaster, turned on during the night, no indicators on front panel. Got extremely hot, too hot to touch, and heated wooden cabinets, also too hot to touch, Would have likely started a fire, had we not discovered it when we did. Unplugged it, but have zero confidence in the toaster now, so won’t use it. This is a definite fire hazard.

No one hurt Made Jul 22, 2018, sent to the company Jul 27, 2018, published by CPSC Aug 10, 2018
The product, in the report: Cuisinart 4-SliceTandem Toaster. Model TAN-4 Serial # 60720
On 03/02/2018 our Cuisinart Toaster Model TAN-4 Serial # 67020 caught fire on the kitchen counter causing approximately $3,500.00 in damage. The fire started when the toaster was not being used but had been approximately 30 minutes prior. I was sitting at the kitchen counter and started to smell something hot turning around to look for where the hot smell was coming from I discovered the toaster engulfed in flames. I then hollered to my spouse who was in the other room to come quick and open the outside kitchen door. I then pulled the power cord from the wall and threw the toaster out the door. Lucky that we were home or we would have probably lost our home. I called my insurance company and they sent an agent very promptly to access the damage. I then called Cuisinart who in turn mailed me a form to fill explaining what had happened, then then wanted me to return the toaster to them for a lab analysis which I did. They have now in informed me 06/01/2018 that the cause of the fire was not from the toaster which is totally false .The cause of the fire was the toaster lab report or not. I have now on 06/18/2018 asked for the return of the toaster a copy of the lab report and $500.00 to cover my insurance deductible . They refuse to answer . The main purpose of filing this report is not about money but to prevent others from serious loss or injury . I.am willing to supply any further documentation that I may have to further this case

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Compact 2-slice Toaster CPT-120 series White
Toasted one slice of bread on setting #2. Toast popped up, butter it and everything normal; left kitchen. Returned to kitchen about 3-4 minutes later and toaster was in flames coming from side. Picked up toaster, with bare hands, and placed in sink. Burning, with flames, escalated, picked up again and placed outside on gravel. Watched it burn for 30 minutes, taking photos throughout. Plastic completely melted into gravel leaving only metal insides. Melting plastic dripped on top of foot leaving a blister. Kitchen counter burned. Had I not been home my house could have caught on fire.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Toaster CPT-120
My wife put a piece of bread in the toaster (Cuisinart cpt120) and about 20 seconds later it made a loud pop and some smoke was coming out of the toaster. She unplugged the toaster. It started smoking more and then some flames started coming out the corner of the toaster near where the electric cord comes out of the toaster. She poured some water onto it. It was still on fire and she poured over a gallon of water on it before it went out. It burned two holes in the white plastic side and corner. This was not burning bread crumbs. It was an electrical fire inside the housing.
