The product, in the report: Breville Lift and Look Toaster
Our Breville Lift and Look Toaster self activate in the cabinet and caught fire. We kept the unit in our appliance garage in the corner of our kitchen. Monday morning my wife got out of bed and poured a cup of coffee. A few minute later the house filled with significant smoke and the smell of wire was strong through the house. The Battlefield Missouri Fire Department responded to help track down the source but never found anything so they told us to get our furnace checked out. The fire had apparently went out where ever it was and the smoke in the house started to clear. We called a local HVAC company who gave our furnace a clean bill of health ($73.00 charge). About 5 pm my wife called me to tell me the furnace test out fine. I told her to check every outlet in the house and check every device plugged into to those outlet as whatever had caused the problem may have just burned up. When she got to the appliance garage the door would not roll up, but as soon as she attempted to roll it up smoke started to pour out and the fire started once again. She determined the toaster had apparently activated itself. We had to break into the cabinet as the plastic channel the roll up door used had melted closed. When we finally go into the cabinet we found a box of coffee creamer had fallen over an was laying on the switch which apparently started the toaster. The toaster is a total loss and the inside of the cabinet us burned up. I had an incident once before when I accident touched the toaster getting something out of the appliance garage it activated itself but I was able to catch it. This is a great toaster but it is no a safe design. My wife does have photos of the toaster on her phone.
