    We were woken by our smoke detector and discovered the toaster we had purchased from Amazon was engulfed in flames. Earlier in the day the toaster had failed to pop up the toasted toast. It appeared to be done toasting, though, as the toast was done and the toaster appeared to be off.     I am formally reporting a serious fire hazard incident involving a Bella toaster that was purchased new only days prior to the event.

    While being used under normal operating conditions to toast bread, the unit experienced a sudden internal ignition failure. The toaster began emitting extremely dense smoke almost immediately. Within moments, the exterior plastic housing began melting and deforming. The electrical cord burned and its insulation failed.

    This was not minor overheating or food debris ignition. The appliance experienced a combustion-level internal failure.

    The volume of smoke was severe enough to fill my entire two-story home (five bedrooms). All smoke alarms were activated throughout the residence. At the time of the incident, the home was occupied by an 83-year-old elderly family member, my 20-year-old son, and two household pets.

    My son disconnected the unit and removed it from the home to prevent further escalation. The appliance was completely destroyed.

    As a result of this event: The toaster casing melted. The electrical cord burned and was compromised. Kitchen cabinetry sustained visible smoke and heat damage. The residence filled with heavy smoke, requiring prolonged ventilation. There remains a persistent odor consistent with plastic combustion.

    This appliance was used exactly as intended and had been owned for only a few days. A toaster designed for high-heat food preparation should not melt, ignite, or produce combustion-level smoke under normal operation.

    The damaged product has been preserved in its post-incident condition and documented with photographs.

    This incident posed a serious risk of structural fire and potential injury or loss of life. I believe this represents a significant manufacturing or electrical safety defect that warrants investigation.

    The product, in the report: Bella Pro 4-Slice Toaster (Model T30584, Item 90225)

    While setting up my Bella Pro 4-Slice Toaster (Model T30584, Item 90225) on my kitchen counter, my right index finger contacted the interior metal edge inside the bread slot and was cut. I sustained two cuts on the finger with bleeding. The edge inside the slot appears sharp/unfinished and poses a laceration hazard, especially for children who may reach into the slots. I documented the injury and the product with photos. I reported this to the manufacturer/retailer and am submitting this report so the hazard can be investigated and addressed.

    The product, in the report: It is a Bella Pro 2 Slice Digital Display Toaster. Bought from Best Buy, model 90104 SKU 6412324

    I purchased a Bella Pro 2-slice, digital display toaster in March of 2021. Shortly thereafter, but outside of my 14 day return policy, I noticed the toaster was not ejecting food when the time was up. Sometimes even the cancel button would not work, I would have to force the knob up to eject the toast. Unplugging it and plugging it back in would sometimes fix it, but it would just end up happening again. I was always vigilant due to this so it was never an issue for me. Well, today, on 10/4/2022, the toaster caught fire due to this failure to eject. My boyfriend got distracted and, usually a smell will alert that something is burning, but he said the toaster caught fire. Luckily he caught it before it burned our apartment & all of our belongings down. It was purchased from Best Buy, model 90104, SKU 6412324.

    The product, in the report: 2-slice toaster, blue...6-1/2” wide x 9-1/4”deep x 7-1/2” high. Used for toasting bagels and bread.

    As I was watching the last few seconds of toasting a bagel, a glowing hot spot developed on the vertical element retainer of the left side of the right toaster slot. At first, I thought it was just a crumb and would burn off in a couple of seconds. But then, a 3” flame shot out from that spot which I quickly blew out and haven’t used the toaster since. The residue from the burned area appears to be metallic, not food.
