The product, in the report: Combination toaster egg cooker

We heard a strange buzzing noise in the kitchen. When we found the noise it was the toaster/egg maker. I unplugged it and went to move it but the egg cooking end was too hot to hold onto. It would’ve been a terrible fire had we not been home and heard it. The smell of burning/hot was awful! The toaster hadn’t been used for a couple of days. The egg cooker hadn’t been used but a few times ever and hadn’t been used in over a year.

The product, in the report: Back to Basics TEM 500 Egg and Muffin Toaster: 2 slice toaster - egg poacher combination

Last night I was awoke to a buzzing sound, thinking it was one of my child’s toys, I wandered around the house until I entered the kitchen. The buzzing was coming from my toaster, at the time I walked into the kitchen, the smoke detector goes off. Smoke was rolling out of the toaster, I tried to make sure it was not pushed down in use, and it wasn’t, the buzzing and smoke continued. I unplugged it from the wall and the buzzing stopped. The toaster was NOT in use. It had not been used since three days prior to last night. The toaster is a Back To Basics TEM 500 brand toaster with poached egg attachment. I have contacted the company Westbend this morning as well.

The product, in the report: combination egg poacher/toaster

We are writing this on behalf of our son. This matter concerns a TEM 500 Back to Basics toaster (originally purchased by my wife and myself years ago but since passed on to our son in very good condition). Our son has reported to us that this toaster had come within seconds of self igniting into what could have become a serious apartment fire here in Seattle. Here is a quick summary of the situation: On 5/22/2012 our son was awakened from his sleep at exactly 2:24 am by a loud electrical buzzing noise coming from the plugged in TEM 500 toaster. Yes, the toaster was plugged into the wall socket but it was definitely in the “off” position. The toaster had apparently reached a very dangerous hot temperature and was emitting noxious fumes. In short, the toaster was aggressively burning itself from the inside out. Our son told us he was severely shaken up mentally and unable to concentrate properly at work the next day from lack of sleep and emotional exhaustion. Our son still is in possession of the toaster. Like the prior complainant (here at safeproducts.gov) we had contacted the company who wants us to mail back the toaster which we are still mulling over. In reply to our complaint the company rep has told us that the toaster instructions call for the user to unplug the toaster after every use to prevent such incidents. We ask you...is this ever a cop out or what? Seriously now, how many people would go ahead and buy a toaster or any kitchen appliance for that matter having known in advance that unless the appliance was unplugged after each and every use a fire might result! We think this is a very convenient way for this company to cover their you know what. And, indeed, it was not terribly difficult to find out about other very similar self igniting scenarios with the TEM 500 with a simple [REDACTED] search. As a concerned family we are not exaggerating when we say this could have been a disaster if the toaster self ignited while our son was away at work during the day. At the very least we felt this merits reporting to the federal government for a possible recall on the TEM 500.

The product, in the report: Toaster Egg Maker

Just sitting here visiting with a neighbor and all of a sudden this buzzing sound started ... went to the kitchen to find the toaster buzzing! The egg maker was HOT ... I unplugged it and did an internet search to find similar results .... ! YIKES ... I would hate to think if we weren’t hope. This happened at about 7:30 on April 15, 2012.
