The product, in the report: T-fal Classic Avante 2-Slice Toaster with Bagel Function, Black.
Toaster caught fire.
I was sitting in my kitchen this morning when I smelled something burning. The plastic on the face of my toaster was burning, with a single bright yellow flame roughly 2” high and 1 1/2” in diameter at the base.
I unplugged it and ran it under the faucet of the kitchen sink. I’m left with a hole in the front, through which you can see an electric wire and an electric component – I think a rheostat – which I suspect overheated to the point that it set the plastic on fire. I don’t know if the flame would have grown high enough to set my cabinet on fire, but since the body of the entire toaster is mostly plastic, I suspect it would have.
Would a recall make any sense? It does seem a basic design flaw to put any kind of electrical component right behind a plastic plate, so that when it does eventually fail, it sets it on fire.
This is a “Classic Avante 2-Slice Toaster with Bagel Function, Black” model 875942/4YD-2505. At least five years old, but it is still on the market. I have the unit here if you want to inspect it, or I can send photos. Thanks
