Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 18, 2023, sent to the company Jan 24, 2023, published by CPSC Feb 7, 2023
The product, in the report: From the amazon listing: “Mueller RapidTherm Portable Induction Cooktop Hot Plate Countertop Burner 1800W, 8 Temp Levels, Timer, Auto-Shut-Off, Touch Panel, LED Display, Auto Pot Detection, Child Safety Lock, 4 Preset Programs “ ASIN: [REDACTED] [REDACTED]
I purchased a “Mueller Austria RapidTherm Portable Induction Cooktop” on amazon.com, on January 10, 2023. The product is amazon stock number [REDACTED] - model # IC-711. It was sold by amazon.com third-party seller “[REDACTED]” (sic), which I have subsequently learned is associated with “Mueller Austria.” I received the product on January 13, 2023. I read the included instruction manual, so as to follow all directions. I then set up the product, and used an induction-compatible small saucepan, in order to try out the product. I chose to do something simple, which was to boil water. The product heated up quickly, as expected, and the water began to boil in a short time. However, the odor of “burning plastic” appeared, and I decided to shut down the unit to inspect it. The odor became so strong, it made me nauseous, and permeated my home. I could not see any melted plastic on the exterior of the product, so I can only assume something plastic inside the unit was heated above a safe temperature. I decided to return the product to amazon, but also searched more deeply the amazon customer reviews. I learned that other customers encountered a similar experience with “burning plastic” odor. This product is allegedly safety-checked by “[REDACTED]” I have not been able to verify that claim. After I posted a review of the product on amazon, staff from “[REDACTED]” (sic) contacted me, offering their assistance. I replied, indicating my openness to whatever they had to say, but the subsequent follow-up was merely to acknowledge the refund amazon had issued for the product.
