The product, in the report: FARBERWARE 4 LITER DEEP FRYER Model Number: 103736 From WALMART on the back of the unit

On the night of December 21, 2016- (our second time using the Farberware 4 Liter Deep Fryer experienced no problem the first time we used the deep fryer) we decided to deep fry breaded shrimp in the Farberware 4 Liter Deep fryer. We filled the unit up to the maximum level line with [REDACTED] Vegetable oil. As per the instructions we set the temperature setting to 350 degrees and turned the unit on. Soon after, a sickening smell/odor (like burning metal) spread throughout our entire house – My eyes began to burn, my head began to hurt, and I felt nauseated. My wife who has asthma was sitting well away from our kitchen in our living room and complained that it was hard for her to breathe.

We turned the unit off and tried to get rid of the sickening odor, but to no avail. We could not get rid of the odor throughout our entire house. The next morning, I checked the set of [REDACTED] FPR 10air filters (which I had installed on December 9, 20 16) located at the far end of our house. The air filters bad turned black (see enclosed picture). I went to Home Depot, purchased another set of air filters, and replaced the discolored black [REDACTED] FPR 10 air filters.

My wife and I left the house for the holidays. When we returned I checked the new air filters. This time the set of [REDACTED] air filters had turned charcoal gray. Before replacing another set of [REDACTED] FPR air filters, we called for our heating and air service man. Two days later, he came out and witnessed the 2 sets of discolored air filters. The sight of the discolored air filters puzzled him. He checked our heating and cooling unit. He found nothing wrong. (We were charged $67.29 for a service call). He could not determine what could have caused the air filters to discolor. He suggested we call an air quality expert for help. I have kept both sets of discolored air filters. I have reinstalled another set of [REDACTED] FPR air filters (FPR 10) on January 9, 2017. There has been no discoloration. To this day, my wife is still having trouble with her breathing.

Since the time of our bad experience with the Farberware 4 Liter Deep fryer my wife has had problems breathing and has experienced an asthma attack. She visited the pulmonary specialist once ( December 28, 20 16) and was given a prescription which has done very little to help her breathe better and has had a second prescription called in. She continues to cough and use a prescription inhaler. The Pulmonary specialist saw the pictures of the air filters and commented on them stating that “it was very interesting”.

Before I replaced the second set of [REDACTED] air filters and determined to fmd out what could have caused the [REDACTED] air filters to discolor- I contacted [REDACTED] on January 7, 2017 and asked for their opinion. [REDACTED] answered me on January 10, 2017. I have enclosed their answer find their response to be very interesting. In the response from [REDACTED], an air specialist stated that the cause for the discoloration was a heavy metal captured by the air filters; He also stated that this could be signs of a Teflon coating burning off the coils of the unit which could and is hazardous to one’s health. He also stated that Farberware is known to coat internal parts with Teflon. He also stated for us to stop using the Deep Fryer.

On the last page of the Farberware 4 Liter Owner’s Manual there is a word of caution paragraph that clearly states that the deep fryer may give off an odor and emit smoke-- also stating that this is normal.

Enclosed you will find pictures of the discolored air filters and our response from [REDACTED]. Also, in the reviews of the deep fryer a customer states that they have experienced the same problem the second time just as we have experienced the problem the second time we used the deep fryer.
