  1. No one hurt

Made Jan 17, 2024, sent to the company Feb 9, 2024, published by CPSC Feb 26, 2024

The product, in the report: Brand: Zojirushi, Model: CV-DSC40 VE, Usage: Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer , Item Weight: 9 Pounds, Capacity: 4 Liters, Material: Stainless Steel, Voltage: 120 Volts, Wattag: 840 watts, Vacuum-insulated keep warm provides maximum energy efficiency, Temperature settings include 175, 195, and 208 degrees F, Temperature-control system; 6- to 8-hour timer; auto shut-off, Measures 8-3/8 by 11 by 13-13/16 inches, Amazon link: https://a.co/d/dffTUa1, user manual on manufacturer’s website: https://www.zojirushi.com/servicesupport/manuals/manual_pdf/cvdsc.pdf

I have a Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer (https://a.co/d/gxO6lq2). This is used to boil drinking water and keep it hot for drinks like coffee and tea. I few months ago I saw these small white pellets in my water. Originally, I believed them to be Calcium and Magnesium from the boiled water. Today (1/17/2024), I did a deep clean and heard something rattle in the lid. I removed the lid from the unit and removed the 3 screws that hold the unit together.

What I found was disturbing, not only was the metal rusted (supposed to be stainless steel), _BUT_ the plastic was disintegrating. The small white pellets were plastic, not mineral deposits. So, basically, I have been poisoning my drinking water for an undetermined amount of time from injesting rust and plastic.

The product, in the report: Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel. Water boiler and warmer with a large 4-liter capacity. Temperature settings include 175, 195, and 208 degrees F. Temperature-control system; 6- to 8-hour timer; auto shut-off. Measures 8-3/8 by 11 by 13-13/16 inches.

I purchased a Zojirushi (CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid) Water Boiler and Warmer from Amazon.com in June 2014. I have used the electric water kettle daily to boil and drink hot water and coffee for several years. I only use distilled bottled water in the boiler, but started noticing reddish stains on the inside of the boiler container which seemed odd. On Dec 17, 2020 I removed the water boiler lid for inspection and noticed that the plastic near the hinge was disintegrating. I proceeded to unscrew the metal lid cover and noticed that inner metal lid was severely rusted and much of plastic interior of the lid was melted. The plastic was brittle and broke in small pieces or turned into fine powder when touched. Concerned that this plastic could fall into the water since the lid design does not effectively separate it, I reassembled the lid and closed it to check if that would be the case. Upon opening the lid, I noticed that white plastic particles were floating in the drinking water confirming my concern that the plastic and rust had been leaking into my water.
