  1. Emergency room

Made May 30, 2025, sent to the company Jun 4, 2025, published by CPSC Jun 18, 2025

The product, in the report: Product Details: Product Name: UPPHETTA French Press Coffee Maker Retailer: IKEA Article Number: 002.978.50 Material: Heat-resistant clear glass pitcher with black plastic lid and handle, metal mesh plunger Capacity: Approximately 13.5 oz (0.4 liters) mini version Size/Dimensions: Approx. 6” tall x 3.5” wide Color: Clear glass with black components

While gently hand-washing a gifted to me IKEA UPPHETTA French Press Coffee Maker, I suffered a sudden, traumatic injury that changed my life. The glass carafe completely intact, with no chips, cracks, or visible damage, was unexpectedly punctured the palm of my left hand near the base of my thumb. The wound was so deep that blood spurted from it, and I entered a state of physical shock, barely able to stay on my feet. I had to self-administer emergency care before being rushed to urgent care by my brother for stitches.

Despite the external wound being closed, internal nerve damage was later diagnosed, requiring surgery and leading to ongoing numbness, pain, and a loss of function in my hand. Simple daily tasks are now a challenge. The emotional toll has also been significant I live with constant anxiety about using glass kitchenware and performing basic household routines.

I am submitting this report because I believe no one should endure what I did from a product used as intended. The fact that such a severe injury could occur during normal cleaning of a product that appeared safe and undamaged is deeply alarming. This French Press poses a hidden design danger, and consumers deserve to be protected.
