The product, in the report: Oster Electric Tea Kettle

My Oster Electric Tea Kettle, model # BVST - EK5967, purchased from Target within the past three months, had an electric meltdown today. It fused the tea kettle base to the teapot. There was a circle of ash one foot around the base, and it smelled like burning plastic. Luckily, I have granite counters and a tile backsplash, and nothing was too close to it.

The tea kettle was sitting on the bottom heating plate, but was not on, and it had water in it. It was on a GFI outlet, which did not shut off. Fortunately we were home and smelled something burning. I can only imagine that it would have caught fire and put the other neighbors in my condo at risk!

I am going to return this to Target, but I wanted to file a report so that someone looks into this. I am seriously worried about the danger this could have caused!

The product, in the report: Electric Tea Kettle, Two Quarts

On or about June 6, 2011, our Oster tea kettle, Model No. 5965, made in China, and purchased from Target on Target on March 31, 201, was on a burner on the stove that had not been in use. That burner was mistakenly turned on. After a short interval the plastic base on which the kettle rests and which contains the electric cord burst into flames. The black plastic base was full enveloped by fire with a thick black smoke being produced. Some of the molten plastic broke off and fell into the stove as the base started to melt. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished with a fire extinguisher before it spread from the stove. The complaint is that this plastic is highly flammable. Since a coffee pot is likely to be around a stove, this plastic should have had a fire retardant added to it. If it had a fire retardant, it would not have developed into a serious fire so quickly.
