The product, in the report: kRUPS coffee maker metal carafe, silver finish
I had a frightening experience with the Metal Carafe on my KRUPS Coffee Maker. I made a pot of coffee, when I picked up the Carafe and the metal bottom fell off the carafe and it was filled with scalding water & coffee. Luckily I stepped back & threw the carafe into the kitchen sink, scalding water & coffee spilled all over the counter, cupboards and floor. Fortunately I did not get scalded, if I had not thrown the pot immediately I would have been badly burned and scalded.

The product, in the report: Espresso/Caffe Combo Coffee Maker
I made a pot of coffee. During the final seconds of brewing, I heard a “pop”. The pop was quite louder than the air pressure pop normally heard. The pop occurred again and we could smell burning and I thought it just bit the dust and would have to go in the trash. I unplugged the pot, not realizing the electrical components had actually started to burn at that point. Within 2-3 minutes, it was picked up to be taken outside and by the time I got to the patio door, I saw flames inside. Attached are photos while it is on fire and after the fire was doused.
I am reporting this incident because of product safety. This was very scary and the outcome would have been very different if I had been in the back of the house and not within view/hearing of the appliance.

Hurt, care not known Made Sep 20, 2018, sent to the company Sep 28, 2018, published by CPSC Oct 22, 2018
The product, in the report: Espresso Maker
On September 20, 2018 in the early morning; I decided to have a cup of espresso. I filled my Krups Espresso Machine with the proper amount of water. Then added a modest amount of ground espresso to the filter holder. Then I turned the machine on. My 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son were curious as to what I was doing. I picked up my son and my daughter stood next to me watching the machine work. I explained to them that I was making Espresso. The hot espresso began to slowly trickle into the glass carafe. As my children and I watched and I continued to explain what was happening..something very unexpected happened. A booming sound followed by hissing steam as the carafe exploded into hundreds of pieces. Glass, espresso and ground espresso covered my kitchen counter, floor and walls. Hot coffee sprayed onto my children and I. My son was nicked by a small piece of glass. We all were in shock as to what could have happened.
The broken glass only caused a minor cut on my son’s leg. Amazingly none of us were seriously hurt! If we had been standing a foot closer...one of us could have lost an eye! This should NEVER have happened!

No one hurt Made Sep 18, 2017, sent to the company Sep 26, 2017, published by CPSC Oct 11, 2017
The product, in the report: Krups Expresso Machine XP1000
On Sat Sept 16, 2017 I attached the filter holder to a Krup XP 1000 expresso maker but did not rotate it firmly into the locking position -- perhaps 10% short of the normal locked position. I used a finely ground Columbian coffee that I tamped down about 3/4 full. The coffee came out without a problem and was almost finished, just bubbles coming out, when there was a loud explosion. Boiling coffee and glass shards were sent flying in every direction including over me and my wife. Luckily I had just turned my back to get a coffee cup, and both of us were wearing long sleeves and pants. Neither of us were injured. The filter holder had blown out of the coffee maker straight down onto the carafe shattering it. If I had been standing watching/waiting as I normally do it is likely that I would have been seriously injured. Coffee was all over the 8 foot ceiling. I would strongly suggest that you put a VERY STRONG WARNING about the need to make sure that the filter holder is rotated as far as it can go. I have used this machine for 2 years without incident and tested it again after the explosion and it works fine. But older people might not have the arm strength to push the filter holder into the proper position or might just be lazy like me and not notice that it was not rotated into position before turning on the machine.
So Krups knew about this problem in 1994 but still haven’t corrected it…. weird. There is no warning or instruction regarding this potential problem in the manual and I nearly lost an eye.... they should be punished.

First aid Made Jan 15, 2016, sent to the company Jan 28, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 12, 2016
The product, in the report: KRUPS USA KRUPS Espresso Coffee Maker Model / Type XP1000 REF: XP100050 / 1P0-4513
In December 2015, I Purchased a KRUPS Espresso Coffee Maker Model / Type XP100, REF: XP100050 / 1P0-4513. I have owned and operated other brands of steam type Espresso Coffee Makers for over 25 years.
In March of 2015, I unpacked the KRUPS and put it into service in my home using it without incident approximately twice weekly. I clean it thoroughly after each and every use. My preferred brand of coffee is [REDACTED] Espresso Roast – ground for me by [REDACTED] specifically for use in a steam Espresso Coffee Maker.
On January 14, 2016, I prepared coffee as I normally do, turned on the KRUPS Espresso Coffee Maker; 2 or 3 minutes later the unit exploded propelling shards of glass, hot coffee, and hot coffee grounds a distance of 15 feet, covering the walls, floor, counters, appliances, and my back. Thankfully I had my back to the explosion. It took nearly 2 hours to clean up the mess and I cut my hand on the broken glass in the process.
On January 15, 2016, I called KRUPS Customer Relations and was told: 1- There are no safety concerns with this Espresso Coffee Maker. 2- I probably caused the problem by tamping the coffee too hard or not cleaning the basket thoroughly (untrue and ridiculous). 3- While there is a safety valve on the water tank, there is no safety valve on the brewing mechanism, that is why it exploded. 4- KRUPS would not replace the Espresso Coffee Maker under the two year warranty. 5- KRUPS would send me a shipping label to send the Espresso Coffee Maker to a service center for repair. I would need to pay for packaging of the unit.
I feel that under the circumstances, I am entitled to either a complete NEW Espresso Coffee Maker or a complete refund of $100. If I had been facing the unit when it exploded, I would have been severely injured. Luckily I sustained only a cut to my right hand and a sizable mess to clean up.

The product, in the report: Krups Thermal drip coffee maker #KT720D This is a thermal glass lined carafe in a stainless steel outer casing with the rest of the coffee maker being stainless steel
My husband and I had just made a pot of coffee in our Krups thermal drip coffee maker, model KT720D. My husband decided to open the coffeemaker and add a little cinnamon. When he attempted to lightly stir this, the coffee pot exploded with a huge noise. Glass from the lining blew out all over the kitchen, luckily missing ourselves and our dogs. the bottom of the pot totally cracked. Hot coffee was pouring out from everywhere. This morning I am still finding small pieces of glass, the size of glitter, all over the kitchen. We were so lucky someone did not get hurt. This needs to be corrected or taken off the market. We still have the outer heating part of the coffee maker but not the carafe.

The product, in the report: Expresso Coffee maker with frothing or steaming spout
The Krups XP102050/1PO expresso maker I own has a serious intermittent problem. Steam escapes from the seal between the body of the maker and the coffee grounds holder spewing scalding grounds for a distance of 3 feet. It has happened 3 to 4 times since I purchased it. There does not seem to be a pattern to what causes it to happen. (It has happened when I use the frother or steamer as the carafe begins to fill and it has happened when I have not done this. I have examined and cleaned the gasket where the coffee ground basket is supposed to lock in place.

No one hurt Made Oct 3, 2013, sent to the company Oct 24, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 7, 2013
The product, in the report: Krups Espresso carafe XP1505
I am reporting the second failure of the handle on a Krups XP1505 Expresso carafe. The glass unit consists of a glass carafe, a metal band, a screw and a plastic handle/lid assembly. The handle/lid attaches to the metal band by means of the screw. The band goes around the glass and the screw tightens it until it is secure. The glass, the band and the screw seem reasonably robust. The screw passes through a thin and weak part of the handle/lid assembly to attach to the metal band. After less than two months of use the plastic around the screw has separated from the rest of the plastic of the handle/lid assembly. The weight and heat of hot (steam produced espresso) in the carafe make the most dangerous time for this item the most likely time for it to fail. The user could be easily scalded. Worse, as most coffee is made at “adult height” little people below that adult in the kitchen are exposed from head to toe. The falling carafe and the broken glass after it lands also present a danger. I have had this failure occur two separate times. The first time I did not know the age of the unit. The second time I know the replacement unit was in service less than two months. Two month or two years, the failure is unacceptable. Krups is aware of this problem and will not remedy it. There was a previous complaint (not by me see, 20121029-0D5C0-2147462420; 20120308-8079A-2147469460; ) of this precise problem. However when I reported this to Krups they (representative [REDACTED]) denied it had ever been reported to them before and that, although in no way defective, the carafe was not warranted to be either fit for the intended purpose or merchantable. (To be fair, Krups maintains that using the carafe with Krups machine X instead of Krups machine Y makes my complaint void. They dod not explain how espresso made from machine X differed in its impact on XP1505’s durability from espresso made by machine Y.) The Krups response to the first complaint is virtually the same as their response to the second complaint and both are belied by their response to my complaint.

The product, in the report: Krups espresso machine FNC2 machine.
I had made an espresso; lucky for me I had not stirred it up well with the sugar as when I had finished drinking it, I noticed a sharp piece of plastic in the sugar. I thought at first that it had not come from the machine as I knew that it had an o ring that was soft, this was hard. So I made another one, then another piece was in my next cup this time larger and really sharp.
I contacted the manufacturer after I turned the machine up side down to see where it came from and asked about the part number that I needed to replace. They said they did not have that part available (they had lost of other parts, but not that one) ...which made me think that many others had the same thing happen.
It is a hard plastic like [REDACTED] that would be bad if someone ingested it. I have the unit still and the broken parts if you want pictures.

First aid Made May 15, 2013, sent to the company May 23, 2013, published by CPSC Jun 7, 2013
The product, in the report: Krups Coffee Maker Model KM405, Part Number KM405550/5CA. programmable 12 cup coffee maker with auto program features such as strength of coffee, time to heat after making coffee etc. Purchased as birthday gift for wife in Sept 2013.
On 14 May 2013 my wife made her daily pot of coffee using her Krups KM405 coffee maker (KM405550/5CA). It was a birthday gift for her purchased in Sept 2012. She made coffee about 11 AM. At about 12:30 PM she left house to go shopping. The coffee maker has auto shut off after 1 hour (Programmable 1, 2, or 3 hours). The carafe had about 1/3 pot of coffee left in it. I was working in yard and came back in house about 1:15 PM. Nothing appeared out of ordinary. I left house to go to store about 1:30PM. Upon returning I was in house and nothing appeared out of ordinary. I went out and was working in front of garage. At about 2:15 PM I heard a strange sound and went to investigate. As I walked on porch I realized it was our house alarm, fire alarm going off. As I entered kitchen flames were coming out of coffee maker and going up front of cabinets and to ceiling. I grabbed the kitchen fire extinguisher and put out fire. Heavy black smoke was throughout downstairs. The damage was: 1) large burned spot on cabinet top, 2) soot over cabinet fronts and bottom, 3) soot on ceiling and 4) large hunks of melted plastic all over the counter tops. l started to clean up mess. I was able to get most of soot from cabinets and walls as well as the small splatters of melted plastic from walls and cabinets. The ceiling (white) is too covered so I will have to paint it. The burned spot on counter top will require new counter tops. I touched coffee maker after fire was out to take it out of house and burned tips of two fingers.

The product, in the report: Krups Steam Espressoo machine
I purchased a Krups steam espresso machine 8/12. Model # XP102050 on line through Amazon.com. While filling the machine with water, the plasic handle suddenly broke off from the glass carafe. No injury, however had there been hot coffee in carafe instead, could have caused a burn injury, or the glass carafe could have shattered. The machine was used only a few times.

The product, in the report: Krups KM8105 Coffee Maker. Stainless Steel, Glass Carafe, detachable water resevoir. Purchased less than a year ago.
I Purchased a Krups KM8105 coffee maker. The unit has a detachable water resevoir, the resevoir began to leak shortly after purchase. I’m an Army Helicopter pilot and have a fair understanding of engineering and although I thought the design was poor I elected to not use the detach feature of the resevoir and just fill it in situ. Now less than a year later the unit is leaking profusely and I can see the water entering into the interior of the unit as well as covering the counter whenever it is filled with water. I belive this presents a significant risk of electrical shock and possibly fire.
I have contacted Krups North America and spoken to a a customer service rep who told me Mr. [REDACTED] would contact me today. He did and was rude and condescending, and explained that without a receipt he couldn’t help and ended our conversation by hanging up. I don’t believe that Krups North America understands the hazard this product represents nor do I belive that they have any regard for the safety of their customers.

First aid Made Apr 2, 2012, sent to the company Apr 20, 2012, published by CPSC May 4, 2012
The product, in the report: coffee and espresso maker, also steams milk
The consumer stated that her coffee & espresso maker hasn’t been working properly since she purchased it. The consumer turned on the coffee maker and she managed to make the coffee with no interruptions. Then the consumer tried to steam milk and it would not steam the milk. She turned off the coffee maker and waited for 10 minutes until it was cool enough to remove the coffee holder. Pressure had build up behind the coffee holder causing it to emit a loud noise and it exploded causing coffee to spill everywhere.
The consumer tried to use the machine again following the instructions on the manual and with the help of a mechanic. She waited for 20 minutes this time giving it a longer period of time to cool down. When she tried to remove the coffee holder the same incident happened.
The consumer contacted the manufacture and they stated that the product was not working properly because she was using filter water. The representative informed her that she needs to use bottle water instead of filter water. She informed the Consumer that the minerals in the water are needed for the machine to work properly.
While on the phone with the representative from the manufacture she tried to use the machine again with bottle water. When she plugged the machine it turned on by itself, the representative indicated that it should not turn on when she by itself. The representative informed the consumer that she would provide her with a $10 discount to purchase a new coffee maker and the consumer declined the offer.
After 10 minutes of hanging up the call with the representative the consumer decided that she would no longer used the machine and proceeded to clean it realizing it was still extremely hot. The consumer burnt the palm of her left hand. She treated the burn by placing ice on it.

The product, in the report: Automatic espresso maker
This is a second identical incident with this product. The first, 09/08/2011, I accepted as just an unusual accident. However, on 02/23/2012, the exact same separation of the handle from the carafe occurred. The handle separates from the carafe during ordinary use. I’m careful with my possessions. My appliances generally last for years but this one created identical problems in less than one year.
I just realized that had either of the carafes contained hot espresso at the time the carafes fell from the handles that hot liquid and glass could have injured anyone ( or pet ) in the area. I. Guess I was lucky that they were empty each time.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. If I’m being an alarmist I’m sorry for taking your time with a trivial matter.

The product, in the report: 10 Cup coffeemaker
Product: Krups coffeemaker (Ref: KM505550/5CA-4609). Owned about 3 years. During routine cleaning of appliance with a mild vinegar solution (9 cups water with 1 cup vinegar) the unit began to emit noxious odors. Water from the reservoir that usually flows up into the filter cone then down into the carafe was not moving through its predetermined path but remained bubbling in the internal plumbing. Upon that observation the unit was disconnected. Further inspection showed the plastic body surrounding the heating plate was melted and had distorted. An opaque sticky, gelatinous substance of unknown composition oozed around the top of the reservoir area.

The product, in the report: Krups IL Primo Type 972/A Espresso Maker
While making Espresso, a loud whoosh was heard followed by a massive steam escape from the unit. No injuries.
Upon disassemble it was discovered the the four plastic (PBTP) mounting brackets that secure the boiler unit assembly to the appliance housing had cracked. The two halves of the boiler unit were separated by approximately 2mm.
The brackets are secured to the boiler assembly with the same screws that clamp the upper and lower halves of the boiler unit together. The brackets are approx 2mm thickness and over time deteriorated such that the bracket split and the material under the screw head broke away from the rest of the bracket on each of the four brackets. This resulted in the boiler unit not being secured to the chassis and being held in place by means not intended for that purpose. Once the material under the screw heads deteriorated further and fell away, there became a 2mm gap between the housing and screw head. Eventually the steam pressure inside the chamber during the boiling process caused the 2 halves of the boiler unit to separate by approx 2mm resulting in a massive steam escape and rendering the unit inoperable.
The method of mounting the boiler unit to the chassis with a plastic bracket is not safe and should be designed with metal brackets.

The product, in the report: Krups FMF5 coffee maker. REF# FMF514/1P1 0211
I have a Krups FMF5 coffee maker that is only a few weeks old. It was fine in the beginning, but then it started to turn on spontaneously. I would make a pot of coffee, the machine would turn off, but then a few minutes later it would start to heat up again with an empty water tank. I noticed when I smelled an odd odor coming from the kitchen. Unplugging the machine prevented a more serious issue. I verified this problem on 3 occasions, and also noted that the readout and the clock no longer worked. I reported this to Krups, who were less than helpful in my request to have this machine replaced, even though they have already removed the machine from the market.

The product, in the report: Krups electric coffee maker
This letter and report are to urge you to issue a safety recall for Krups electric coffee maker, model KT 4065 which I believe is a newly designed product. You can see from the receipt, I purchased this coffee-maker five months ago; I began using it approximately four months ago, Early in use, the coffeemaker spilled hot fluid all over our kitchen counter on two occaSions, but I dismissed it Recently, it has it done this on a fairly regular basis, Enclosed is the actual coffee maker so you may test and verify the safety design defect in this product. Also enclosed is my receipt and the product booklet with warranty. Although this item is still under warranty, the terms indicate that Krups would repair or replace the item. Since this item is a huge safety hazard, I am not interested in another one of these.
Defective design, This coffee maker overflows the carafe spilling scalding hot fluid onto the counter or table. For families with small children who reach onto the counter, this is particularly dangerous. From my inspection, it appears that either the plastic lid to the carafe or the cone filter chamber is the culprit. The lid has a small trap door and very small entry holes for the water. I am a foodie and purchase high end appliances, cutlery, kitchen devices and am well versed in how to use them. The cause of the chronic overflow problem is definitely not:
(1 ) Lack of cleanliness. There was no excessive debris or calcification because we clean our coffee makers with white vinegar every 2 months. When this second spillover happened, I performed an extra deep vinegar soak and clean of all parts to make sure this would not happen again. It functioned fine for two mornings, then three days later the overflow occurred again.
(2) The grind or type of coffee. We grind our coffee by hand where it is not too course, not too fine as we have for the past 4 years. We primarily use [REDACTED] Decaf or Breakfast blend. This was the coffee in use during the overflow incidents.
(3) The type of filter. We use the same filters we have always used. Two previous coffeemakers over the years have used the same cone type which we get at the grocery store nearby. I enclosed a few of those so that you can see for yourself should you decide to test this.
(4) The centering of the carafe. I have made 100% certain the carafe is centered directly under the cone (in fa~ there is a crevice that guides the carafe to keep it centered) and that the lid is correctly tightened on top with the thumb tab aligned correctly.
(5) The water level. I have made 100% certain that I only fill the coffee maker up to the 10 cup level.
