I have purchased 2 GE Coffee pots that the same model was recalled in 2010. The first one caught on fire so I returned it to Walmart. I exchanged it, and called GE to report it. The representative said he would record it and that they have NEVER had issues with their units before. 32 days later, the second one has caught fire too!

  5. First aid

Made Feb 7, 2013, sent to the company Feb 19, 2013, published by CPSC Mar 5, 2013

The product, in the report: Five cup General Electric coffee maker

I purchased a 5 cup coffee maker, made by General Electric, at Walmart about 2 years ago. In less than a year the cover for the pot broke off. I called GE and then returned the coffee maker to Walmart, where it was replaced. That was in February, 2012. On Feb. 5, 2013 I made a pot of coffee, and when I went to pick up the pot, the one piece handle and lid broke off, leaving several small pieces of plastic and the screw which tore loose from the metal band around the pot. The pot fell forward, and I was scalded from my ribs down to about the middle of my leg. I was wearing only underwear because I had planned to drink the coffee while I got dressed. I immediately got in a cool shower (painful burn) and when I could stand to touch the area used [REDACTED] cream. I am writing because two of these pots broke in a very similar way. With the first one, the lid broke off when the plastic didn’t hold. With the second one, the entire plastic mechanism broke as soon as I lifted the pot of scalding coffee. I think these pots should be tested for inferior quality plastic, which can result in serious damage. When I called GE at [REDACTED] and told the robot the model number printed on the front of the booklet, it insisted there is no such number, but obviously there is. The model # is 898677.Below that is UPC605388986771.

  6. No one hurt

Made Oct 23, 2012, sent to the company Nov 6, 2012, published by CPSC Nov 21, 2012

The product, in the report: GE 12-cup Coffee Maker: Model #169209. Should have been recalled with the other recalled coffee makers...of 2010. The heating element can melt the water container and product will leak water through the bottom and onto the counter top. Possible electric shock from contacting water and appliance.

General Electric 12-cup coffee maker: Model # 169209.

This is very similar to the recall that GE put out in 2010. This model also has a tendency to overheat, and the heating element will burn a hole in the water recepticle and the water will leak through the bottom of the base and onto your counter top. Can also cause an electrical shock from the water leakage.

The product, in the report: GE Electric 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker, model #898682. Sold at Wal-Mart stores. Black.

I received a GE Electric 12-Cup Coffee Maker, model #898682, as a gift in June 2012. On September 22, 2012, I turned the unit on, and after a few minutes heard a crackling noise and began to smell scorched plastic coming from the heating tank area of the appliance. In addition, smoke had begun to rise from the machine (not steam, actual smoke). I immediately turned the unit off and unplugged it.

The product, in the report: GE 12-cup digital coffee maker, black color brushed silver metallic trim

I purchased a “made for Walmart” coffeemaker, model 898682, serial #ES19586, Date Code 1144, inspector sticker QC(A) at a local Walmart (store #1982) on 07/14/. The following day I cleaned the machine and made coffee. I used the machine once a day, every day until 08/9/12. Approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the brewing cycle, I heard 3 very loud snapping, sparking sounds, followed by a very distinct smell of burning vinyl plastic. Looking into the kitchen I saw a large plume of gray-white smoke emitting from the coffee maker. I immediately unplugged the machine and grabbed my fire extinguisher. I opened the top covers of the machine and gave it a good blast with the extinguisher, and experienced a pretty good-sized cloud of noxious fumes from the machine which even with the oven-hood fan on high and two floor fans caused me a miserable headache, nausea and stinging eyes. I let the machine cool and removed the machine to another area. My apartment still smells of burnt-plastic that [REDACTED] has difficulty covering. Needless to say, the machine is no longer operational.

The product, in the report: general electric 12 cup coffee maker...model 169209 brown

We purchased a GE coffee pot 12 cup model 169209 from walmart about 9 months ago. yesterday it started smoking from the rear in billows. It would have burnt down the house if we were not home. They are still selling them at Walmart cuz we went a bought a different one today. I’m concerned about house fires with this pot.
