RE: Dunkaccino Machine Accident Store: WilcoHess, #4001 3663 Roy Messer Hwy, 37890 Date: 12/31/13

    Dear Sir/ Madam:

I am writing regarding your Dunkaccino machine at the WilcoHess location. We visited this store (#4001) on 12/31/13 @ 3:15PM. This is a self-service Dunkin Donuts location. My son attempted to get a Dunkaccino. The instructions on the machine stated that you should push the button to release the liquid but stop when the cup was half way full. He went just past that halfway point when filling his cup before he released the fill button. When the cup began to overflow onto the counter, he panicked, grabbing the cup from the machine and scalding his hand. The salesperson quickly came out to check on us & cleaned up the spill. My son immediately ran his hand under cold water, took Tylenol for the pain & inflammation, & was given an ice pack by the store manager for the drive home. His entire hand up to mid forearm was pink & edematous. Fortunately, he did not blister. He had discomfort for the remainder of the day & a few days later had peeling of the skin as if he had a sunburn.

I felt it necessary to contact you to ensure this does not happen to anyone else. The store employee stated that this has happened before, indicating that this is not an isolated incident.

Safer practices should be put into place. It would make sense if the machine had a button the customer could press based on the cup size. The cup would be placed onto the machine, a button pressed for size, and no further interactions would be required by the consumer until the machine is finished. No gray areas for someone to have to look into the cup for a halfway point or misjudge the level to stop the machine before it overflows. There also seems to be no safety switch to prevent a young child from quickly pressing the button without even having the intent of getting a beverage.

I urge you to look into this hazardous issue. I would appreciate a response with a plan on what will be done to keep this from reoccurring. I look forward to hearing from you.
