The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

DeLonghi All-in-One Coffee & Espresso Machine, Model BCO430

While descaling the brewer, significant plastic flaked off from inside the machine. This occurred even after running water through machine 10 times. Concerned that this has been happening while brewing coffee too and plastic has been ingested. The public needs to be warned and the company needs to be put on notice to recall this product, offering full compensation to consumers. The company requested a video. I provided a video of the plastic bits that came through the brewing cycle using water (no coffee).

I want to report the poor and dangerous quality of a coffee machine branded De Longhi Magnifica. There is a plastic level to turn to make the foam and one day, when I used it breaks in a sharply way and I had a big cut on my finger.

De’Longhi combo coffee/espresso maker (COM530M model from best buy) The espresso part spontaneously turned on (the switch for that side was OFF) and started spewing out HOT steaming water (I got splatters on my arm) I had to unplug the device to make it stop, and when we turned it back on, it did the same thing. I’m glad my pets were not harmed, and I could imagine a child could also be seriously harmed from the hot water if they had been nearby.

I started noticing small and sharp shards in and around coffee cup from time to time. I had no idea where they were coming from. My kids would find them on the floor sometimes in addition to my pet trying to lick them. Then I noticed the front of my espresso machine was loose. Upon closer inspection, the front cover fell off and revealed more shards of plastic. It looked like the plastic inside the cover became brittle from the heat of the delonghi ecp3420 espresso machine.

  6. Seen by a doctor or nurse

Made Feb 8, 2018, sent to the company Feb 16, 2018, published by CPSC Mar 5, 2018

The product, in the report: DeLonghi BCO330T, Serial Number 72825

On February 7th, 2018 at approximately 3:30 PM PST, I was operating an Espresso/Coffee Machine (DeLonghi BCO330T, Serial Number 72825).

I firstly began using the machine by adding water in the top reservoir of the unit, waiting about three minutes for the water to heat up, then I added almond milk to a frothing cup and heated up the milk with the unit’s steam wand.

Shortly after, I grabbed the espresso portafilter and added coffee using the measuring spoon included with the unit, enough to fill it at half capacity or for two shots of espresso coffee.

I began by priming the brew head to clean it. I then inserted the portafilter into the brew head, ensuring that the filter basket was properly inserted into the portafilter and that it it was flush, as I normally do when I operate the machine. I twisted the handle counter clockwise into the machine and ensured the handle was pointing to the arrow on the machine, so it lined up properly.

I began the espresso brewing process by turning the switch on the side of the machine upwards and espresso began to brew and fall into a glass cup that was provided in the box for use with brewing espresso.

As it was brewing, the unit had already poured enough coffee for one shot of espresso, and being accustomed to the machine, I knew it would take about a minute or two to finish brewing the full two shots of espresso, so I walked less than five feet away from the machine to another side of the kitchen and nearly two seconds after I walked away I could hear pressure build up in the machine, then suddenly heard a boom similar to a grenade exploding.

I stood there realizing and shaking by what seemed to be an explosion. I understood that I was lucky to have walked away for a moment as I could have been killed or seriously injured by the explosion’s debris (the portafilter that flew from the blast of pressure, the hundreds of pieces of glass from the glass cup as well as the burning hot espresso grounds and coffee) which flew all over the room, the dining room, and the living room.

I began by trying to clean up the mess and cut my finger with the broken shards of glass, so I consulted a cleaning lady and had her come clean up the debris which flew all over the room and previously prepared food and other kitchen items.

I am writing this so appropriate measures can be taken to prevent this from happening to anyone else. I was left with a scene that looked like it came out of a Hollywood movie. Moments after the incident happened I contacted DeLonghi’s customer service and spoke with a woman named [REDACTED] from Coffee Machine support and not only was my story not believed, but [REDACTED] asked me twice to plug in the machine again and attempt to brew a new batch of espresso, while she was on a video conference call with me although my repeated attempts to tell her that I was not comfortable with going through the experience again as I was almost seriously injured.

I bought a DeLonghi espresso maker and the handle had a defect. The plastic was coloring my hand when I held it. I reported this to the company and they sent me a new one. The same thing happened. I believe that this is a defect that might be larger in scope.

Coffee maker backfired, sputtered, smoked then smelled like burned metal and electrical before it ceased to function. The exact same incident occurred in April, 2011 with the same model coffee maker that I had, that DeLonghi replaced with this one after I sent them the cut off plug.

I own a DeLonghi EC155 espresso machine. It is 1 year old. It has worked reliably until I stopped using it because of the smoke

It recently started smoking around the steam control knob, after a couple of weeks of emiting a burning smell.

I removed the top and the smoke is coming from a plastic cover on a spade connector connecting onto the heating element

The product, in the report: Espresso Maker

The consumer says he uses product once a day. He says he follows all the instructions on how to clean and how to use which are very detailed. The consumer says one day while in use, the water was flowing out of the machine. The consumer says it was very hot water. He turned the unit off, and cleaned everything again. He said the same thing happened when he tried to turn it on again. He went online where he purchased it and saw a number of reports of consumer’s experiencing the exact same issue. The consumer contacted the manufacturer and filed a report who said they had never heard of this issue.

UPDATE: Consumer gives link of other people who have had the same issue with the machine leaking.

Please find the following links on another page: -Amazon customer discussion- DeLonghi EC155 15 bar pump expresso and capuccino maker forum- “leaking from base of the machin” (you can find a number of other discussions but this is the longest one) - A couple of YouTube videos- Note that not all of the videos define the model of DeLongghi machine but do seem to show the basic problem expressed by many customers.
