  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Jun 19, 2026, sent to the company Jun 24, 2026, published by CPSC Jul 10, 2026

The product, in the report: Breville Barista Express Pro espresso machine, model BES878BSS, in brushed stainless steel. This is a countertop semi-automatic espresso machine with an integrated conical burr grinder, a stainless steel outer casing, a removable water tank, drip tray, and bean hopper. It measures roughly 13 inches wide, 16 inches deep, and 16 inches tall, and weighs approximately 23 pounds. Serial number A1BUAESA210600313, batch code 2106. It was purchased on May 30, 2021 from Seattle Coffee Gear via Amazon Marketplace. The product is used to grind coffee beans and brew espresso, and operates on standard household 120-volt power through a grounded plug.

On 6/7/2026, while cleaning behind my Breville Barista Express Pro espresso machine, model BES878BSS, serial A1BUAESA210600313, batch code 2106, my chest came into contact with the front of the machines outer metal casing and I received a strong electric shock. The sensation was comparable to a forceful blow to the chest. At the time, the machine was plugged into a properly grounded kitchen outlet, as it always had been, and was switched off. I was wearing shoes, standing on a tile floor, and using a dry paper towel to remove dust. No water or liquid was involved. The machine had been in normal use for approximately five years, purchased May 30, 2021, with no prior incidents. A properly functioning grounded appliance should not deliver a shock through its external casing, which indicates a possible internal electrical fault such as a compromised ground connection or a live component contacting the chassis.

I did not require medical attention but found the incident alarming. I have unplugged the machine and have not used it since. I reported the incident to Breville, case number [REDACTED], and the unit is being sent to Breville for diagnostic inspection. I am filing this report so the incident is on record and so any pattern of similar reports can be identified. The machine had been in normal use for approximately five years (purchased May 30, 2021) with no prior incidents. I did not require medical attention but found the incident alarming. I have unplugged the machine and havent used it since. I reported the incident to Breville, case number [REDACTED]. Their proposed solution was to have me ship the unit to them for a diagnosis, after which they would provide a repair quote and charge me to fix it, despite the machine having delivered an electric shock. I am filing this report so the incident is on record and so any pattern of similar reports can be identified.

The product, in the report: Brand: Breville Model Number: BES990BSS2JAN1 Serial Number: A1BUAESA211609549 Batch Number: 2116 Category: Kitchen > Coffee Makers / Espresso Machines Purchase Price: $2799.95 Date of Purchase: (Approximate date is fine 3 years ago)

I own a Breville Oracle Touch espresso machine (Model: BES990BSS2JAN1, Serial: A1BUAESA211609549, Batch: 2116), purchased three years ago for $2,799.95 from Seattle Coffee Gear. Though the machine was plugged in but turned off, it became extremely hotenough to burn my fingers on the brew head area. I reported this to Breville Customer Support and was told Id get a call back the same day. No one followed up. I also sent a mailed letter and an email, but received no response. The overheating persists when the unit is plugged in, even while powered off. It must be unplugged to avoid dangerous heating. This is a serious burn, fire, and electrical hazard. Breville is the only authorized repair provider, and no espresso repair shops in the Seattle area will service this model. The machine must be shipped back to Breville for repair, but they have been unresponsive.

The product, in the report: Breville Precision Brewer Thermal Coffee Maker, 60 oz. Brushed Stainless Steel BCD450BSS

I found mold floating in my coffee!! I clean my Breville Precision Brewer coffee maker (Model BDC450) every day before I brew my coffee. I think I’ve brewed almost 800 carafe’s of coffee in my coffee maker since I bought it in 2020. I know this because I’ve bought 8 packs of 100 coffee filters. I wash all components downstream of the hot water shower head. Every surface gets cleaned with water and a paper towel, every brew. I also run warm water through the coffee drip inlet on the top of the carafe lid to attempt to clean all of the fluid path. I set the lid aside to dry while grinding my coffee beans.

I recently (just today) found chunks things that were not coffee grounds in my coffee. I researched online to see if anyone was having the same problem. There were. Here is a link to what I found: [REDACTED]

Based on everyone else’s similar experience and troubleshooting methods, I made the decision to destructively inspect my carafe lid to see if there was mold. I used a razor blade to carefully undo the ultrasonic weld that holds the lid together. What I found was totally disgusting. There was black, stringy mold inside of my coffee carafe. And the only way to get to it was destroying the lid. This uncleanable surface hidden away, which is introduced to warm condensate every day, harbors an unthinkably large colony of bacteria and mold. This product needs to be recalled. I’m not the only one who is experiencing this problem, clearly.

The danger from this product is unavoidable and presents a high risk of longterm health problems.

I have pictures of the inside of the carafe lid, if this helps the CPSC issue the recall. I am very seriously concerned that others will be hurt by this product.

The product, in the report: Breville Oracle Touch Espresso Machine

I bought a Breville Oracle Touch Espresso Machine in 2018 and it’s worked great until now. The seals have broken on the boiler that cause water to escape the boiler. It then drips on to a relay switch that’s below the boiler which causes a short and my GFCI outlet to trip. This is extremely dangerous and could cause a fire if this machine is not plugged into a GFCI outlet.

The product, in the report: It is an electric tea kettle that is supposed to turn itself off after boiling the water.

I have a Breville Ikon 1.7 electric tea kettle that no longer shuts off after the water boils. It just keeps boiling. I feel very lucky that I discovered this before it completely ran dry and started a fire.

I contacted Breville warranty support and they said they will not send me a replacement kettle because it was manufactured more than 1 year ago.

I can’t believe an $80 tea kettle only has a 1 year warranty and that Breville refuses to stand behind their products when a serious safety issue is at stake. Breville advertises this kettle as shutting off automatically when the water boils. If it doesn’t do that, and people expect it to, serious problems could result.

The product, in the report: Breville expresso maker

We have had Breville 800ESXL Expresso Maker for the last year. We kept smelling a burning odor coming from the machine. Eventually, the odor was gone.

Recently, the steamer option stopped working. We initially thought it was the pump going. When we open up the machine, we found many of the electrical connection with plastic covering had burned off, which explains the burning odor we have had. Furthermore, some of the connections were sparking.

This expresso machine has a stainless body. I am just gratefull that none of the us were elecuted. I guess fire would of been another hazard.
