The product, in the report: BLACK+DECKER 12 Cup Programmable Coffee Maker - Black - CM1110B
Coffee maker started emitting smoke with normal usage. The mode of operation was as follows: The machine had made some coffee and thus the water reservoir was empty. The metal plate under the carafe was heated because the machine keeps coffee warm after it has been dispensed to the carafe. It was in this mode of operation when smoke started to unexpectedly be emitted from the coffee maker. The smoke was coming out of a hole from which the electrical cord for the unit also comes out. I did contact the manufacturer, but they were not interested in receiving the unit back even though the unit did absolutely emit smoke in to my kitchen. So instead I returned the unit to the Target store I bought it from, returned on 7-18-2024.

The product, in the report: 12 cup Programmable Coffeemaker
I was returning the carafe to my coffeemaker to the base when I
scratched my wrist on the glass of
the carafe. I had used the coffee maker that morning and it did not have a problem, and I did not hit or
damage the carafe in any way… the hole simply appeared in the glass near the bottom of the carafe below the Black and Decker logo and the metal band. The hole continued to spread over the next several days.
I think it’s important to know that the exact same thing happened to my son and daughter in law who have a similar Black and Decker coffeemaker. The hole appeared when my son was filling the carafe with water thankfully but they have a two year old child who could have been burned had the hole appeared when the carafe was filled with hot coffee.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker coffee maker CM2046 series, Thermal programable 12 cu coffee maker. Stainless steel exterior urn and carafe.
I bought a Black& Decker Coffee Maker, CM 2046 series. I was going to use it for the first time, so I followed the manual instructions on how to clean it for the first time use. The carafe overflown, I did not notice it. When I removed carafe from machine, hot water trickled down and it was very hot. Felling the burn, I jerked and tilted carafe even more, before I could place it down on the counter. Lots of hot water ran out through the handle, burning my entire hand.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker programmable 12 cup thermal coffee maker
My Black & Decker thermal coffee maker does not turn off when the brewing cycle finishes. The handbook says it should but when I called Black & Decker customer service they acknowledged that it would not. They said to unplug the coffee maker when not in use. I have found several recalls for this type of Black & Decker thermal coffee maker in the past. This appears to be a continuing issue.

The product, in the report: Under the counter coffee maker carafe
Black & Decker under the counter coffee maker with date code 1539-YA purchased from Amazon January 2016.
The carafe is designed with very little lip and a metal band on bottom with top part attaching to carafe with a clip.
The carafe has been used the past week until January 10th, 2016 when the caller was filling it with water when the clip came loose holding the handle.
The caller is reporting this incident due to the danger if the clip came apart after being filled with hot coffee due to the potential danger of harm or if the carafe broke and shattered causing glass to potentially cut those nearby.
There are no injuries being reported
He contacted the manufacturer January 11th, 2016 and advised that he could receive a replacement using the same carafe or he could obtain a refund.
He stated he purchased the unit from Amazon and will hold Amazon responsible for the refund.

First aid Made Nov 22, 2015, sent to the company Dec 1, 2015, published by CPSC Dec 15, 2015
The product, in the report: Spacesaver coffee maker
Water was dripping out of the reservoir when brewing coffee. A puddle of water formed under the unit. I called the number on the unit and I was instructed to cut the unit’s electrical cord and mail it back and a new unit was sent to me. Recently, the carafe cracked and hot coffee spilled on my hand when I was pouring it in my cup. I went online to purchase a new carafe and found out about the original and also the subsequent recall. If the company knew about the recall why would they send me a new unit? I am confused to the issue at this time. The original incident occurred in June of 2012 to the best of my knowledge.

Hurt, no treatment Made Oct 3, 2015, sent to the company Oct 13, 2015, published by CPSC Oct 27, 2015
The product, in the report: Black & Decker Smart Brew Coffeemaker. Model DCM2000B
This morning, after brewing a pot of coffee as usual in my Black & Decker 12 Cup Smart Brew Coffee Maker Part #: DCM2000b Type 1, the upper plastic handle retainer broke loose from the pot. I was very fortunate that I keep the coffee maker at the rear of my counter-top so that when the pot fell, it hit the countertop and did not drop the scalding coffee on my leg and /or foot. It appears that the glue that also hold the handle to the pot also separated and the only thing that saved me was the lower handle screw in a retainer. Although the pot did not fall to the floor, there was a large counter-top spill and a few splashes of coffee did fall on my foot.
Upon examination, that screw was actually on its last thread and if the counter had not stopped he pot from dropping, would have failed also. We use this coffee maker twice weekly (on weekends) and this unit had been in service for about 6 months.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker coffee maker model 1050B Type 1
My coffee maker was plugged in but not on; I had put water and coffee in it for the morning, but had not programmed it. I heard a funny noise from the kitchen around 10pm and when I investigated, there was pungent-smelling smoke (it smelled like burned plastic) coming out of the bottom of the unit. I unplugged it and dumped out the grounds and water. The unit continued to smell so I took it outside.

Plugged in coffeemaker in preparation to make coffee and it began steaming even though I had not turned it on or put any water in the reservoir.
Made coffee in it and then turned it off later. Accidentally failed to unplug the unit. Noted several hours later, the unit was still heating (even though it is one which is supposed to turn itself off if left unattended for a prolonged period of time),
Have retired the unit and do not plan to use it again.

The product, in the report: coffee pot
Had purchased several Black & Decker coffee pots all the same model in the last few months. Each had the same issue. 1. It does not shut off > 2 hrs or 2. The glass pot base is much smaller then the heated area. This allows the glass pot to move outside the area where the coffee can flow into the glass pot. When the coffee is coming out instead of going directly into the glass pot it is poring on the side onto the counter. This can cause an electrical shock or fire. I sent and talked to B& D letting them know the problem. They do not seem concerned. The product, in the report: Black & Decker Spacemaker Coffeemaker Model #SDC740B with a plug #940YA
I own a Black & Decker Space saver Coffeemaker of which the handle of the Carafe broke while I was pouring a full pot of coffee spilling hot coffee on my wife’s lap and my self. When I tried to order a new carafe from the company they told me there was a recall of that particular machine. They then told me that they were going to replace same of which I was satisfied. Two days later the coffeemaker quit working for what reason I don’t know. So I called the company back again and they told me to cut the plug off 3” from the end and send a check for $7.50 to cover shipping and they would ship me a new one even though it was out of warranty. I did this and 3 days later I got a letter telling me to send the whole unit back to them and they gave me the name of a Rep. and a phone number to contact her. Approx. 3 days later I tried to contact the Rep. who sent me the letter, a [REDACTED] of Applica Consumer Products Inc.. The phone number they gave me was[REDACTED] which states that number is disconnected. I then called another number to her direct office, [REDACTED] of which I have called approx 6 times and left messages plus have sent her 3 e-mails of which she has responded to none of them. It seems that the company does not want to get involved in this incident or just doesn’t care, plus they cashed my check for $7.50. Please advise what I can do to rectify this problem. They have my old coffeemaker and my $7.50.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Coffee Maker Model # CMD3500MBT
My mom had bought me brand new coffee maker (Black and Decker Model # CMD3500MBT) I had used it once, on Sat. Aug 28th to make coffee. I did not use it again after that time, but kept it plugged in due to the clock feature. On Tuesday, August 31, 2010, it shorted out catching my kitchen on fire and killing our pet dog, Wilbert. An electrical engineer stated that it was a short in the machine that caused the fire and definitely not a problem with the electrical wiring because of the burn pattern. Although it didn’t burn through the roof and burn my house down, it was still a total loss and we lost everything. Thankfully I was at work and my children were at school when it occured.

Hurt, care not known Made Sep 25, 2012, sent to the company Nov 13, 2012, published by CPSC Nov 28, 2012
The product, in the report: Bought 9/19/12 - Black and Decker 12 cup programmable coffee maker - Model #CM4000S, couldn’t find a serial # - still have this unit but needs to be returned.
I bought a $80 [REDACTED] 12 cup programmable coffee maker from Target and followed the instructions for cleaning prior to use. I even brewed 2 cycles to ensure the item was clean. However, when I started drinking the coffee, there was a distinct bad taste. I’m not sure exactly how much I ingested as I wasn’t really paying attention at first, but as I focused on the problen I noticed that there was both a strong smell and taste of melted plastic. I then smelled the hot unit and could smell it more strongly when I lifted the basket compartment lid. That afternoon I had diarrhea (very unusual for me) and a nasty aftertaste in my mouth. I took the unit back to Target and bought a Black and Decker 12 cup programmable unit (I’m not sure if the two companies use the same plastic manufacturers). This time I ran 4 cycles after washing the unit completely, with a similar result although the smell and taste were not as distinct. Still, I had a severe upset stomach and had to leave work on Thursday morning and call out sick again on Friday with diarrhea, and neusea resulting in with some vomiting. I also bought a third unit on Thursday [REDACTED], followed the directions and haven’t had any plastic smell or taste. Even today, (Saturday) I still have that plastic taste in my mouth, although my stomach did start feeling a little better yesterday afternoon. I saved a small portion of the coffee in case there is something toxic about the plastic in those units that may need to be investigated. My concern is that the plastics being manufactured for these units may contain toxins that I somehow ingested and that could make other people more sick than what I have experienced. This is the first time I’ve bought a kitchen appliance that produced a melted plastic smell/taste associated with use. I have notified both [REDACTED] and Black and Decker about the problem in the hopes that they will research the problem and rectify it, and have posted my concerns [REDACTED]. However, I thought I should notify someone in authority/government, just in case this is far worse than what I’ve experienced. I don’t know if this is considered a poison but it sure made me sick.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Spacemaker Coffee Maker, model SDC750C
I have been waiting an unreasonable amount of time to receive a replacement carafe under the recall of the Black and Decker (Applica Consumer Products) Spacemaker coffee pot recall. This recall was posted by the CPSC on June 1, 2012 (Release #12-191). My coffeemaker was model SDC750C, was included in the recall, and I executed the on-line recall form with Applica on June 7, 2012. I still have not received a replacement carafe from them, nor has there been any correspondence from them on a status update (how much longer to receive, etc.).

The product, in the report: This is an under the counter space saver coffee Pot made by Black and Decker. It is the SDC 740B
Making coffee with the Black and Decker Space Saver Coffee Pot ( SDC 740B ) Once the coffee was ready and I picked up the carafe to pour some coffee, the handle broke away from the glass carafe causing the hot coffee to pour all over the top of my counter and down between the stove and counter as well. Fortunately, I was not burned, but that is only because I acted quickly and put the carafe down on the surface as fast as possible. We were lucky we did not get injured, however, we had an all day cleaning event as we needed to remove the electric stove and cabinet from the wall for cleaning as hot coffee poured everywhere.

The product, in the report: Under the Counter Coffee Maker
This coffee maker has been unsafe from day 1. When you insert the pot underneath the basket, it pushes a lever and allows coffee to drip into the pot. That lever did not work properly, and most of the time, if you were not standing there to watch it, it would dump about 8 cups of water and coffee grounds all over the counter. When I complained (after taking out the lever so I could at least make coffee) the company sent a new basket with a new lever (I threw the old one away, as it wasn’t correct), and that has been working well.
This model drips more water on the counter than any other pot I have ever used. Water drips from above the water container when you remove or replace the container. Water drips from above the grounds basket when you remove or replace it. Not a small amount either, much more than you would think possible.
Then, the coffee pot handle had come loose. So recently, the company sends me an e-mail explaining the recall, because the pot is unsafe. Unfortunately, the only way to get a new pot, is to mail the old one in first, wait approximately 2 - 3 weeks, hope the new pot comes in, hope the new pot works. The company has not been able to offer me a suggestion as to how I am supposed to make coffee during this 2 to 3 week period, nor do I see why, after paying a premium price for this contraption, I should have to worry about that. Why not send me the replacement pot, and I will put the old one back in the same box, and return it to you?
If I had the opportunity to get one of these again, I would definitely not. I am even thinking of acquiring all future coffee makers from another company.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Spacemaker Coffee maker, 12 cup
Black and Decker Spacemaker coffee make, SDC740, was recalled. The recall was for a defective carafe. The carafe on my coffee make came apart in may hand and shattered, spilling coffee everywhere. I purchased another carafe, since I did not know of the recall at that time. Shortly after that. the maker itself stopped working.. no power, no lights not a thing.
Once I was informed of a recall, I sent in the Info to the recall center and received, after several weeks, a box in which to send the carafe back for a new one. WHAT ABOUT THE [REDACTED] COFFEE MAKER. I DON’T HAVE A CARAF SINCE IT BROKE INTO A MILLION PIECES.
HELP!!! NEED A NEW COFEE MAKER!!!

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Spacemaker under the counter, 12 cup programmable coffee maker, Model No. SDC740B, possibly serial no. 142AY, Black
Black & Decker Spacemaker 12 cup programmable coffee maker (mounts under the cabinet and above counter top). This coffee maker was purchased new for Christmas 2011 and first mounted under the cabinet and used in mid-January 2012. It was used solely by two adults for brewing morning coffee and had never been dropped or damaged.
After making a fresh pot of coffee, I went to pour out a cup of coffee. The top section of the handle of the carafe (which appeared to be attached to the rest of the carafe by only one small screw and glue) came apart. As a result, hot coffee poured everywhere - fortunately just on the counter below and not on anybody.
However, it could just as easily have burned someone, including any child standing nearby.
Customer service was contacted and is sending a new carafe; however, I am somewhat reluctant to use the coffee maker again because of the risk involved.
Picture is attached later in this report.

Black and Decker model DLX1050B Coffee Maker starts brewing as soon as the unit is plugged in. The heating element continues to stay on well after all the water is boiled away. If left plugged in I am afraid that it would eventually melt and/or catch on fire. The power usage would be horrible even if it did not fail.
