No one hurt Made Dec 26, 2011, sent to the company Jan 4, 2012, published by CPSC Jan 26, 2012
The product, in the report: bialetti muka coffee maker Two part unit that holds water and coffee in lower container and milk in the upper section, hot coffee is pumped up into upper section where coffee and heated milk are combined before pouring into cups
Bialetti Muka Expresso coffee maker has exploded twice sending hot coffee up to the ceiling and all over the kitchen counters. First incident occurred 2 years ago and the company sent us a replacement valve assembly to prevent a recurrence. This new valve was a different design and worked successfully until December 6th when the second valve exploded. Parts of the plastic/metal assembly travelled upward with enough force to damage the stove exhaust hood and break a glass cover on one of the hood’s lights. Hot coffee sprayed an area in an area about 24 inches in diameter on the ceiling above, and required repainting. More importantly, this coffee eruption was within 18 inches of a house guest waiting for the first cup of the day! Major burns would have occurred had he been closer to the stovetop.
The company response was to provide 2 replacement valves and an “I’m Sorry”
One question, unanswered by the company, was whether our altitude of nearly 9,000 ft would impact the release pressure of the valve assembly A possible cause?
I would like to see an independent evaluation of this product before some one is badly burned. THANKS
