  1. No one hurt

Made Dec 14, 2016, sent to the company Dec 27, 2016, published by CPSC Jan 11, 2017

The product, in the report: BLACK+DECKER TO1303SB 4-Slice Toaster Oven, Includes Bake Pan, Broil Rack & Toasting Rack, Stainless Steel/Black Toaster Oven Model #: TO1303SB 120V-60 Hz, 1150W

I had puchased a Black & Decker toaster over (BLACK+DECKER TO1303SB 4-Slice Toaster Oven). I unwrapped it and removed all of the packing and packaging materials on it. I placed the oven on my granite top counter, plugged it into a socket, and put in 4 slices of toast. I selected toast on the oven and picked a medium level of browning on my toast. The glass fogged up as soon as I turned the dial to start the toasting. After about 3 minutes, I saw smoke leaking out of the oven and I opened the door and saw flames above the toast (the toast itself was not on fire), as if the filament had caught fire. The I pulled the plug from the socket and closed the oven door. After a few seconds the fire went out but my smoke alarm went off. I opened the windows to let the smoke out and subsequently opened the toaster oven. The toast was blackened, obviously. However, there were scorch marks on the inside and on the outside (see photos). I now own a kitchen fire extinguisher.
