The product, in the report: Toaster oven
Kitchen aid toaster oven model KCO253CU.
This is the second failure of this oven I have had. The first one failed and would not come on, defective switches. It was replaced the replacement lasted about a year when it failed. I had had problems with it not always turning off when the timer ran out but was able to have it go off by switching to toaster from bake. This time it went off but after we finished supper my wife asked why the oven was on. It had come on by itself and the only way I could get it off was to pull the plug. I plugged it in this morning with all switches in the off position and it came on. I will be cutting the cord and scrapping it will not buy another. Kitchen Aid used to be one of the better quality appliances until they outsourced to china. They have gone downhill fast since then.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Commercial Style Dual Fuel Convection 30 Inch Range.
Roasted vegetables in brand- new Kitchen Aid Dual Fuel range using convection roast function at 475 degrees. After completing oven cooking, turned oven off. Excessive steam from a vent under cooktop front panel caused burner control knob on front panel to become excessively hot and unusable. We called for a service technician through Kam Appliances from whom we had purchased new oven. Service technician was able to replicate issue and measured knob temperature to be as high as 170 degrees. Kitchen aid was notified by technician and, reportedly, was told that “oven is operating as designed” and that they are aware that the knob may actually become as hot as 190 degrees. Consumer was told to wear oven mitt when using hot dial. Kitchen Aid also sent technician new knobs which did not fit and were useless.
As an elderly person with grand children, I am concerned about safety and, if I use the oven, can not turn it off if I am cooking something on the stove top. Only after completing my stove-top cooking, can I turn off the oven knowing that the heat coming from that vent can cause potential harm when standing near that vent. This is an unsafe range.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Model# KC02220B, Ser.#WF03601527, Counter top oven unit with mechanical timer
After using a Kitchen Aid counter top oven to broil, for its designated cook time of a meal, and having turned off when the timer bell rang, had continued to rotate the timer down to the point of turning itself back on to broil indefinitely. I had left the kitchen to eat outdoors and came back in hours later to the smoke detectors going off and the house full a smoke. I unplugged the unit and called manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Kitchen aid toaster oven. Model kco222ob.
Kitchenaid toaster oven model kco222ob. It has one of the heating elements bent out of shape, and is extending out of its protective cover. It should be a straight heating element. It started sparking, probably because it is touching the guard and the top of the oven.

Son cooking fish sticks in toaster oven. Heard a pop. There were flames between the outside of the oven and the inner box of the panel (looking at oven it was the back, top where the wire feeds into the top of the cooking part of the oven). Was able to unplug and move outside prior to any property damage.

First aid Made Sep 2, 2013, sent to the company Sep 10, 2013, published by CPSC Sep 24, 2013
The product, in the report: Counter top oven
I recently purchased a Kitchen Aid counter top oven Model No. KCO223, SN WF22303606. The directions say to make toast, preheat the oven for 5 minutes ar 450 degree F, and then set the toaster to the color desired. After doing this on 8/27/2013, I burned the back side of my thumb while opening the door using the handle. After this happened, I tried touching various parts of the oven. The entire door frame, the entire left side, the entire top and part of the right side were to hot to touch. In each case you could not hold your finger on the oven surface without getting burned. The previous ovens got warm to the touch in these areas but you would not get burned.
On 8/28/2013, I had an online chat with [REDACTED] at Kitchen Aid. Her response was this was normal for counter top ovens, She recommended wearing an oven mit when opening the door.
This exterior temperature does not seem normal to be based on previous experience. It would certainly be unsafe for most adults and certainly be unsafe for 10 to18 year olds who are very likely to use this type of oven.
Regards,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Counter-top oven
I had quite a scare this morning.
I put a piece of bread in my KitchenAid Countertop oven, set the position switch to “toast”, and set the timer for 6 minutes. When the timer is up, the machine “dings” and turns itself off. There is nothing abnormal here.
This time, the appliance did not “ding”, and did not turn off. And I forgot about the toast. After maybe 15 minutes, I smelled something burning, and found heavy smoke pouring out of the countertop oven. I noticed the timer was still set at 6 minutes, and the oven was still on and really hot.
I turned the appliance off, and left the door closed. I did not want to introduce oxygen to the mix. But the smoke was extensive and continued to pour out, and I knew I had to get the toast out or my house would smell for months. I opened the window, grabbed a hot pad, opened the oven door, grabbed the toast, and flung the really burnt toast out the window. There were no flames, but I suspect ignition could not have been more than moments away.
After the oven cooled, I cleaned it up, and examined the timer switch. The timer is a mechanical spring-wound clock-like device that ticks as it counts down. It operates without electricity. When the timer times out, it opens a set of electrical contacts to shut off the power to the heating elements.
I rest the timer numerous times. Ninety percent of the time, the timer would ”tick” and run down normally, but twice, when setting the timer at 6 minutes, the timer would not start ticking. It would just stay at 6 minutes, with both top and bottom elements on. The oven would have stayed on indefinitely. I have not found a one-line diagram or traced the internal circuitry, but I expect the thermostat is only in the circuit when the oven is used for baking, not when used for toasting. For toasting, all elements are on full power continuously.
I reviewed the owners’ manual, and found it suggests for times less than 5 minutes, moving the timer switch to greater than 10 minutes, and then turning it back to the time desired. But my problem was at 6 minutes.
The oven is Model KCO1005ER. The serial number (WGT2610420) dates the appliance to 2006. No recalls were found.
I see this as a definite fire hazard. I welcome your comments, questions, or suggestions.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid 12” Countertop oven
I was baking a quesadilla at 375 degrees when I heard a loud sound. The glass door on the toaster oven completely shattered into pieces. We were lucky we were not standing in front of the toaster oven as the glass went onto the counter and floor. In an effort to close the toaster oven door when cleaning it up the glass went flying up and almost hit me in the eye. I phoned Kitchen Aid who said they heard of only “one other person having this problem”. They suggested I mail the unit back to them and they would send me another one. After thinking about this option I decided to bring the unit back to Kohl’s where I bought it because I feel uneasy about using this unit again.

Incident: The Kitchen Aid countertop oven caught fire and damaged my kitchen.
My Concern: Plastic material used in base of oven burns and is not self-extinguishing.
Details: The toaster oven was located next to the cooktop about five inches away from the large burner. The burner was left on by mistake with a copper teapot on the burner. After about fifteen minutes the smoke alarm when off. The plastic base of the countertop oven was on fire. The product, in the report: KitchenAid 12” countertop toaster-oven-broiler
On Sunday, May 22, 2011 I bought a KitchenAid 12” countertop toaster-oven from Target in Peoria, IL. Got it home, set it up, plugged it in and set it for 350 degree Bake. Less than 4 minutes later, I noticed a strong burning smell. When I looked through the window into the oven I saw that it was ON FIRE!!!! My husband came into the kitchen when I screamed. He quickly unplugged the oven and took it outside of our home, setting it on a brick walkway. It was several moments before the flames were extinguished. We planned to return it to the store immediately, but it was too hot to safely put into our car. 30 minutes later it was still hot to the touch. My husband noted that the hottest spot was not where we saw the initial flames. The flames originated on the upper rear element, but the hot spot then appeared to be closer to the top front, as if the fire had spread. The next day we returned it to the Target store where we bought it for a refund. The only note made during the return was that the product was “defective”.
