  1. No one hurt

Made Mar 24, 2021, sent to the company Apr 1, 2021, published by CPSC Apr 15, 2021

The product, in the report: IKEA Nutid Self-Cleaning Convection Oven Model Nutid article 60288701

On Friday afternoon, March 19th, 2021, I was using the self-clean option on my IKEA Nutid (Whirlpool) 2016 convection oven on the shortest cycle available (3 hours) when I heard a loud explosion less than one hour into the cycle, presumably as soon as the oven reached temperature. The inner tempered glass door had shattered shooting hot glass all over the inside of the oven and across the floor in front of the oven. I am still finding shards of glass in distant places in my kitchen, and it continues to present a sharps hazard. The oven was less than 5 years old and was not often used and was not very dirty. In fact, the self-clean option had never been used before, although I have used self-clean options many times on other ovens. I had removed the grates from the inside of the oven and followed the instructions for the self-clean operation. The oven was not visibly damaged in any way prior to the incident. Luckily, no one was near the oven, but 500-degree Fahrenheit glass that shot out from the oven could have easily significantly injured anyone walking near the oven at the time of the incident, especially if it had been a pet or a child or if someone had been at eye level with the oven, bending down to grab a pan from a nearby cabinet or to sweep up dust from the floor. Additionally, my family has to wear shoes at all times, as we are still finding shards of glass despite having swept many times.
