No incident, no one hurt Made Mar 23, 2026, sent to the company Mar 26, 2026, published by CPSC Apr 9, 2026
The product, in the report: It is a “mini smart oven,” a counter top oven which can be used for baking and broiling, as a toaster oven, and for other cooking and heating purposes.
This is about a Breville Mini Smart Oven, basically a toaster oven, used in our family kitchen mainly by adults. It gets extremely hot when used. The product is made for use in small spaces. The electrical cord on the rear of the unit is set up so that it can be plugged into an electrical socket without extending the cord away from the unit. The plug attached to the cord is encased in soft plastic. Because of the short distance between the rear of the unit and the electrical outlet, the plastic casing of the plug abutted the back of the unit. We were unaware of this, and there was no cause for concern because the unit was made to fit this way. Over the months we have used the unit, the heat was high enough to melt the plastic casing of the plug to the metal rear of the unit. The plug is now stuck fast to the metal unit while plugged in. Eventually the plastic will melt through, and current will flow throughout the unit, which is all metal. This is a very dangerous situation as it presents the potential for severe injury, as well as a fire.

The product, in the report: My Products THE ORACLE TOUCH - BRUSHED STAINLESS STEEL SKU BUSBES990BSS1BUS1 Serial Number A1BUAESA212902818
Breville Oracle Touch espresso machine (purchased new Dec 2021, $2699.95) failed catastrophically on first use post-2024 Breville service. Powered on immediately stuck in heating/flushing cycle. Exterior became extremely hot to touch (scalding). Very hot/boiling water expelled from rear vents. Audible boiling sounds, possible electrical flickering. Unplugged immediately - clear fire/burn hazard. Overheating/boiler failure also occurred years prior (pre-2024 service when boiler parts replaced among other parts). Two total Breville repairs failed to resolve chronic defect. Machine sat unused post-service until March 7, 2026 incident. No injury but imminent risk of fire/serious burns. Breville refuses replacement (offers 35% discount), cites expired warranty despite safety hazard.

The product, in the report: toaster oven
The Breville toaster oven model BOV860 BSSUSC has been used sparingly in our Florida home; purchased 2022 at Home Depot in Palm Bay. We, my wife and I, have noticed that the interior coating has been flaking off and landing on our food when toasting bread and bagels. We are unsure if we have inadvertently ingested this material.

The product, in the report: Breville Toaster Oven
My Breville toaster oven starts on its own. This has happened several times, including moments ago, yesterday, and the day before. I contacted Breville, and they offered me a 30% off coupon for another product. To me, it seemed to fall on deaf ears. This poses a serious safety hazard, as it could potentially cause a fire.

The product, in the report: Breville Smart Mini Oven Stainless steel Model number B0V450XL
We went to unplug and clean our Breville Smart Mini Oven. As we tried to unplug it, my wife notice the plug had actually melted onto the metal backing of the product. The mini oven did have 1.5 inch bumpers that should have helped ensure there was sufficient distance between the wall and the product to stop something like this, but it appears not to have actually been helpful. Although a fire did not start, this seems like a potential fire or electrocution hazard- we had no way of knowing that wires were potentially being exposed.m as there was no smoke or smell. We noticed it when trying to clean the product but did not notice a smell.

The product, in the report: Small countertop “toaster oven”
On four occasions our Breville Mini Smart Oven Model # BOV450XL, turned itself on (with the dial on bake) and proceeded to begin heating for a bake cycle with timed count down. Luckily the first time this happened the “buzzing” of the oven woke my son, who unplugged it early this morning. Testing the oven afterward three times... plugging it , it will sit for about 10 minutes and automatically turn on; I verified this using different electrical circuits. I did call Breville Support who is sending a shipping label to diagnose the problem and will quote on a repair. I am shocked to discover the “fail state” for this appliance is “ON” and not “OFF”.. which seems to the a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Breville Smart Oven Pro Model BOV845 BSS, batch 2136. This is a convection toaster oven.
Breville Smart Oven Pro Model BOV845 BSS batch #2136. This toaster oven tripped our kitchen GFI twice within 3 weeks. After the second tripping of the GFI, I used a voltmeter and determined that the outer case of the Breville was fully electrified, and, as I understand it, would have delivered a shock to myself or my wife if it weren’t for the GFI. I returned the product to Breville, who examined it and wrote back: “During the inspection, our technicians discovered unforeseen damage that was not initially evident. This required additional materials and labor to address properly. Even after doing so, safety concerns were still evident and resulted in unrepairable scenario of your unit.” In other words, it seems that this Breville product was so dangerous that even Breville’s own technicians said they couldn’t fix it.

The product, in the report: Breville Smart Oven, BVO800XL, purchase 7/27/2022
Set oven to cooking temperature -375F, placed food inside walked away. Came back 20 minutes later oven had set itself to 120F and food temp was 82F, uncooked chicken. Previously the oven had reset temperature unattended. Added a video file where you can observe the oven change the temperature without any external influence , temperature drifts from original 350F down to 200F over the course of a few minutes. First time this happened was while cooking raw chicken. We have also seen the oven drift up in temperature to its limit of 450F, again without any operator input. This is a potential safety hazard. Oven is just over 1 year old (July 2022) and manufacturer did not want to know, offered a repair at $135 plus shipping as it was a few days outside the warranty period.

The product, in the report: Breville Toaster Oven
5 or 6 year old Breville Toaster Oven Model #BOV450XL--Imprint # 1650. Had not used the oven for about 24 hours. We were asleep and heard beeping which we had not heard before. When we went into kitchen toaster oven was beeping and turned ON and was extremely hot. We unplugged device. An hour or so later we plugged the toaster oven back into wall and it started to beep and then 15 or so seconds later TURNED ON BY ITSELF without us turning it on. We again unplugged the toaster oven and plugged it into a totally separate wall outlet and same thing happened. Circuit breaker at no time tripped. We called Breville customer service who said they had no similar reports and that there was no recall. They offered to repair--we said “no”. They would not replace as out of warranty but did give us 35% coupon for another purchase. What happened was very dangerous and we have never experienced this before with Breville or [REDACTED] toaster ovens

The product, in the report: Breville Mini Smart Oven (toaster oven)
Toaster oven turned on by itself, they unit kept beeling and with each beep the remaining time increased. This means the oven would have turned on and stayed on indefinitely until unplugged. Also, the start/cancel button does not respond. We were in the kitchen and witnessed it happen. This could have started a fire if we weren’t home at the time.

The product, in the report: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, Model #BOV900BSS.
I purchased a high-end toaster oven/air fryer from a reputable retailer. I read the manual thoroughly, and the first time I turned the oven on, it exploded and sent shattered glass flying through my kitchen. There had not been any obvious defects with the oven prior to the explosion. We were working through the initial setup “Before First Use” steps as specified in the manual; specifically, we wiped down the interior of the oven, inserted the crumb tray, plugged it in, and set it for “pizza” which, according to the manual, was supposed to walk it through a 20-minute pre-use cycle to burn off a protective coating from the heating elements. After it completed the “preheat” phase of this cycle, it exploded. When I called Breville’s customer service to report this dangerous incident, the representative informed me that the shattered glass was caused by the weather. To be clear, the oven had been in its original packaging and unopened shipping box under our Christmas tree for several weeks prior to first use, and first use occurred in the kitchen of our climate-controlled home. I am unable to view the serial number or other identifying details on the oven without exposing myself to broken glass.

First aid Made Jun 1, 2021, sent to the company Jun 3, 2021, published by CPSC Jun 17, 2021
The product, in the report: compact smart oven
Breville’s compact smart oven does not have a stopper or clip (as in their other ovens) that stops the rack from sliding out uncontrollably. I recently bought a compact smart oven, the tray slid out without control, toast went on the floor and the hot tray hit my leg causing a horrible burn.
I complained about this matter to Breville’s customer service team 4times. I even sent them a picture of my burn right after it happened. (Since then, the burn has become much worse and caused me considerable pain.)
What will it take to get Breville to fix this dangerous problem, that could be solved with a little metal clip? It makes no sense not to fix this oversight that would probably only cost a few cents that could be passed on to the consumer. Does a child have to be burned before Breville will take action?
Thank you.

The product, in the report: Counter oven
Caller stated that after using the oven air to make a pizza, a few mins later he heard an explosion. The glass panel of the oven door exploded shattering glass pieces all over the counter top, floor and dispersed to the other side of the room. The heat pieces of the glass pieces burnt the velcro mats he had on the floor.
(5/10/21) Caller stated that he contacted the manufacturer and was advised that a replacement would be sent out for him to return the damaged unit.
Caller feels that this product is a safety hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Breville - Smart Oven Pro Convection Toaster/Pizza Oven - Brushed Stainless Steel Model: BOV845BSS
Glass door shattered on Breville BOV845BSS toaster oven after 18 days of ownership. It had just finished preheating to 400 degrees, which we’d done every day since buying it, but last night, doing the identical thing, it just shattered. Glass went everywhere on our counters and onto the floor several feet away. Had our 9-year-old son been taking something out of the oven or putting something into it, glass would have flown directly into his eyes. We have seen other reports of this identical problem. This is not just an annoyance; this is a real and known threat to consumer safety. This product will blind someone if it is not recalled. Please recall this product.

During the last couple of weeks, the GFCI on the circuit for this toaster over had tripped. On this particular date, 06/22/2019, while using the toaster over, a large amount of sparks came out of the vent on the right side of the appliance. This caused the circuit breaker to trip. It was a frightening experience as I was standing right next to the toaster oven and saw the sparks. I have left the device unplugged since and am waiting to return it to the manufacturer.

A dangerous product. The problem involves my new Breville Mini Smart Oven, Model BOV450XL /Ac
The back becomes searingly hot and burned through the plugged in [REDACTED] electric cord causing a short in my electric system of my apartment. The electricity needed to be turned back on through the central box in the building basement, not the one within my apartment.
I have owned small toaster ovens all my adult life and this is the first model the become so hot in the back that it burns through wires.
Why does this model not have insulation inside the back?
When I called Breville to report the problem, I was told there no warning on the front but something on page 3 of the paper manual. I asked why there was not a warning posted directly on the front of the machine. He told me it was not necessary.
I feel fortunate that nothing flammable was touching the back of this poorly made product. it is dangerous.

I own many Breville products and have given two of their smaller convections to both of my older children. I purchase these products for their perceived quality. Unfortunately my oven door spring broke and has now rendered my oven unsafe and unusable. This is clearly a design flaw on this model and repairs should be covered by extended warranty. Paying excessive $100 charge to replace defective and poorly designed spring is unacceptable. I like the item and products, but this problem and design issue is a challenge. Absent a satisfactory response of free repair or replacement from Breville, I will be forced to publish incident informal to their major distribution channels. I believe this is both a fire and safety hazard to my home.

The product, in the report: Breville Smart Oven | Convection Toaster Oven BOV800XL
While cooking at high temperature, the door to this oven flung open forcefully. I heard a popping sound and then the door flung open. When I went to close it, it closed momentarily and then opened again, and it was apparent that whatever mechanism the oven has to keep the door closed, was broken. Likely that is the popping sound I heard.
Having done further research about the model, it seems like this is a common issue: the spring that holds the door closed weakens and then breaks at some point.
If that breakage happens while cooking, it’s pretty dangerous. I ended up with a minor burn on my arm, but with children or anyone who cannot move quickly, that could have been much worse. Also, the oven is designed to operate even for hours at a time, so a fire is also a significant risk should the door open and oven continue to operate... which was the case for me. Luckily I was there to immediately turn it off.

The product, in the report: 1800w Countertop Oven
I purchased the Breville BOV800XL at Bed Bath and Beyond and the unit was operating normally for about 12 months. I told everyone that would listen how much I loved this product, citing that the price was absolutely worth it. One day the unit was working correctly, the next day it wasn’t. The LCD screen still functions properly, as do all the knobs and buttons, but upon pressing the start button (which activates the burners) electric popping can be heard and sparks can be seen shooting out from an area under the LCD panel. I had my hand on the side of the unit and it shocked me pretty hard.
I’ve actually never had an appliance do this, I certainly didn’t expect it to happen from this device when it’s a very high end purchase from a reputable company. (around $220). After looking into getting the unit serviced, I decided to call Breville to see if they’d take care of this issue since it is most certainly a design flaw, a VERY DANGEROUS design flaw. Breville’s phone support suggested that I PLUG THE DEVICE BACK IN and try different settings to see if I could get the heating elements to heat up.
This is very irresponsible and dangerous advice, I honestly fear that this unit could catch fire if I plug it back in.
Breville, you should stand behind your product. I’ve read other stories online where this exact same issue is happening to other people with the Rev. A version of this oven.

Toaster oven door falls wide open during operation
I own a Breville BOV800XL toaster oven - convection smart oven 1800 watts. Recently I placed a food item in it, closed the oven door and walked away. Upon returning 20 min later, I found the door wide open and the oven full on! I closed the door and it immediately fell wide open. The oven is designed with a heavy bar handle, located up high on the door. The design Places the center of gravity up high on the door, requiring an appropriately designed closure spring to hold the door closed.
I called Breville to notify them of this design flaw and request a replacement oven. This is a widely distributed product carried by Bed Bath and Beyond - I wasn’t sure of purchase date. As I communicated to Breville, this is a design flaw - a weak spring not capable of holding this heavy door; over time the spring breaks allowing the door to simply fall open. Breville customer service as much as admitted the spring has since been redesigned. I provided a number from the back of the oven and was told it was manufactured in 2010. Breville is unwilling to replace or repair the oven unless I pay a $120 service charge (the eventually agreed to do it for $90).
Frankly, I don’t care about the money. I will likely ship it back and have it repaired because otherwise I like the item. But, I do not have young children in our household so this enables me to consider the problem from a different point of view. What shocked me was Breville’s complete lack of acceptance of the fact this design flaw could result in a serious burn injury. I would think this rises to the level of a recall for a repair. I have worked as a Product Manager for over ten years; telling consumers to pay to fix a serious safety design flaw seems, well, flawed!
How many thousands of these ovens are in consumers homes, being used daily, with the potential the door will flop open at any moment? Shouldn’t Breville at least issue a safety warning?
I would be happy to send you an iPhone mpg of the door falling open (immediately after it is closed) if this is helpful.

The product, in the report: Breville BOV800XL/A countertop toaster oven
On 07/23/2014 I purchased a Breville BOV800XL/A toaster oven based on the high recommendation published in Consumer Reports magazine. Generally, my complaint has to do with it gets VERY HOT on the outside.
When I first used it the following morning, when I opened the door to remove my toasted English muffins, my finger touched metal door frame and I got a painful burn. I then ran another cycle and my laser thermometer indicated between 110 and 120 degrees. Subsequent test yielded temperatures on the outside door frame of 109 degrees (top) 96 and 99 degrees (sides), and 141 degrees (bottom). The metal frame inside of the door ranged between 140 and 160 degrees. The top of the oven was 162 degrees.
I then ran a ten minute broil cycle at the 500 degree setting and the door frame was about the same as with the toasting and the sides and back were between 90 and 110 degrees. However the tip was 185-290 degrees.
There are warnings in the manual on page 4 and 5 under a column title “important Safeguards” and made reference to exceptions for top storage on page 47. They also made reference in that section to a bamboo cutting board designed to fit on top. Some of the consumer comments on the Amazon.com web site indicated the cutting board was of marginal quality and the feet on the bottom elevated it that made it appear to be a heat shield.

Pushed the button that turns the toaster oven on and heard a loud noise and flames shot out the back. I could smell a terrible burning smell afterward. I told my son and unplugged it. I didn’t get a chance to tell my husband he plugged it in and tried to use it and the same thing happened. The toaster oven is on counter away from anything else and has space around it. We have had it for four years and it has always been in the same place. This could really have started a fire. Luckily it is on tile and just has tile behind it and nothing flammable near by.

The product, in the report: Compact Oven/ Breville Compact Smart Oven model BOV650XL
I purchased a Breville Compact Smart Oven model BOV650XL approximately 2 years ago at a local Bed Bath and Beyond. Recently the upper heating elements stopped working. I searched the internet and found reading Amazon reviews other owners reported their ovens also had heating element issues. Some people fixed the problem by ordering new elements and replacing them. Being a handy person I ordered new top elements. When they arrived I took my oven apart. I found a spade (for the top element) that should be soldered into the PCB was completely loose and it fell out. The area around the circuit board was burnt from excess heat. I documented it with photos which I have included. This is a manufacturing defect and quite possibly could have caused a fire in my home. I contacted Breville customer service USA in Torrance CA. I was admonished for opening up the oven and told the unit is out of warranty. They offered to give me 40% off the purchase of a new unit. I told them I wasn’t interested in buying another Breville appliance.

Sent to Breville (“ask us” “feedback” section) via e-mail Saturday 18 Aug 2012:
Just a note to say that my oven caught fire this morning. Shortly after turning it on to make toast, I heard a noise and saw a flame within the right side housing (the flame was visible through the vent). The flame died out after about five seconds. I unplugged the machine and moved it to a safe area. Smelled the typical acrid odor related to an electrical component burning. Thought you should know in case you have had other reports of same.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Additional info for CPSC: I guess the noise I heard could be described as a “poof.” I was only a couple of feet away and the noise immediately drew my attention to the oven. The flame was 1-2 inches tall at max. When I saw the flame, I opened the oven door to see if the flame was in the food chamber; it was not. By the time I closed the door and checked the vent again, the flame was dying out.
The only thing different about our use of the oven over the past weeks was to gently move it the day before the fire--but only far enough to clean beneath it and return it to its normal spot.
