The product, in the report: BLACK+DECKER CRISP ‘n Bake 6 slice Toaster Oven

TOASTER Twist knob timer of Black & Decker toaster oven / air fryer combo counter-top oven stuck and therefore the toast function did not shut off and burned our toast to seriously smoking. We caught this each time, it happened TWICE. It is an intermittent failure. We know how to turn it past medium toast level, then back to light toast, where we desired it... Please believe that we were extremely careful about this but it happened again, after a few times working as expected.

The product, in the report: BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven with Natural Convection, Stainless Steel, TO1760SS

I was hearing up some taco shells in my Black and Decker toaster oven. I had it on the low toast option. All of a sudden the taco shells were on fire and the entire toaster oven had flames coming out of it and we’re about to catch onto the wall. I used the fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. The product being used was the BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven with Natural Convection, Stainless Steel, TO1760SS. Upon further investigation I found 59 other [REDACTED] reviews reporting that this product is a fire hazard and that other people have had their toast oven suddenly catch on fire too. This product should not be on the market.

The product, in the report: BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven with Natural Convection, Stainless Steel, TO1760SS None of this is a joke. I think the only reason why no lawsuits is because item is cheap, just hurts the poor, and doesn’t kill just is a severe burn risk in many ways. Also, for those unconcerned about safety it is in a small category of inexpensive high wattage, small toaster-ovens. Why dangerous? 1) Leak from toaster heats knobs which get as hot as inside of toaster. Steam visible on knobs while heating. 2) Door does not open completely, so easily tips forward toward user and worse hot rack slides out toward user when tips. 3) Poor or zero tactile and audio feedback for off, and hard to turn-off. 4) Worse, just passed the off position is a permanently on position. So easy to accidentally keep on. Fire hazard. They even know it, and warn in big letters what to do in case of fire. Only indicator is subtle light, and very subtle in daytime since it dims (not kidding) when inside reaches set temperature. 5) Small, but BPA containing product poorly labeled. 6) Rack is in contact with glass. I could not maintain any space, even with effort. This is probably why negative reviewers report that glass shatters. The main risk is obviously that heat leaks through backs of knobs to a a virtually unlimited temperature (maybe limit is 450 degrees F, I did not do an experiment) AND easily tips toward user spilling hot rack, and falling.

The product, in the report: BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven, White, TRO420

Yesterday, I toasted an english muffin in the White Black And Decker toaster oven (BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster Oven, White, TRO420) which I purchased about a year ago. The toaster oven was definitely turned off and the over door was opened. I grabbed the toast and left the house and returned home the next day as I stayed overnight at a different location. The toast oven was completely on at full toaster heat with the door open and the knob past off. I felt relieved that a fire was not started. I’ve read on Amazon that many other reviewers experienced this same situation. The product should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Toaster Oven, model TO2050S

My wife was using the Black & Decker toaster oven to toast a piece of bread. She assumed the toaster would stop when the toast was done. It failed to stop, and kept toasting. Eventually, the bread caught fire. Luckily, our nanny discovered it, and was able to unplug the toaster oven and stop the fire.

This model has a ‘toast’ timer knob with a poor design, insofar as it must be turned past the 4 minute mark and then back down, if the desired time is less than 4 minutes. There is mention of this in the manual, and in extremely small type on the face of the toaster. However, the type on the face is easy to miss, particularly for an appliance that should be as easy to operate as a toaster--my wife said she never knew that was required. (And how often will consumers fail to read the whole manual?)

This poor design and poor notice might not be so serious if, as I assumed, the consequence of failing to turn the knob past 4 minutes were that the unit would simply fail to activate, or perhaps that the time of operation would not precisely match the desired time. For the consequence to be that the unit toasts indefinitely seems a serious fire hazard. This seems all the more likely to cause problems given that most items only need to toast 2-3 minutes (in my experience, 2 for a piece of toast, 3 for an english muffin).

In other words, consumers may be exposed to this potential hazard every time they are engaged in the most common use of the product--toasting bread or an english muffin for 2-3 minutes.

The product, in the report: Black + Decked toast oven in stainless and glass door

We purchased a Black+Decker toast oven from Macy’s in Dec/2015. This morning I put a piece of toast into the oven and use light setting. I went back to my dining area in a minute or so, we heard a ‘bang’ noise. My husband and I went to the source of the sound in the kitchen and saw the entire glass door of the oven was shuttered and the door had fallen off. Broken pieces of glass were all over my kitchen counter and floor. Sometimes, I would stay in front to the toast oven to wait, fortunately, I did not today. I could have been hurt badly by the shuttered glass.
