No one hurt Made Mar 11, 2024, sent to the company Mar 12, 2024, published by CPSC Apr 2, 2024
The product, in the report: Black and Decker toster oven UL listed number E187786. Model or serial number could not be derived from unit.
Brand new Black and Decker toster oven nearly causes house fire. After recently purchasing a toster oven from Walmart, a dangerous defective timer mechanism caused the unit not to turn off after the timer had counted down. I used the oven 10-20 times before the failure occurred. It was about 1 month old at the time. I typically cook small pizza in the oven. I set the timer to 8 minutes. The timer controls the power going to the heating elements and turns it off after it makes a ding. When the timer failed, it got stuck one second before it was supposed to ding, causing the 8 minute pizza to cook until a small fire began in the oven and my smoke alarms went off. I was able to turn the oven off by applying a slight amount of pressure to the timer knob, pushing it past zero and causing an audible ding and the de-powering of the heating elements. The issue persists and the oven must now be carefully monitored throughout the cooking cycle. After searching [REDACTED] it seems this is a very common problem with these toster ovens. Timer mechanisms must be built reliably to turn power off.

No one hurt Made Jun 30, 2022, sent to the company Aug 8, 2022, published by CPSC Aug 22, 2022
The product, in the report: Black and Decker toaster oven model TO1760SS
When I first received this new toaster oven, a replacement for another model which was defective, I top-broiled a piece of bread with pesto to warm it. All went well. When I did it again the next morning, the unit exploded, knocking off the handle and scattering glass up to seven feet away. This happened as I was approaching the toaster oven to remove the heated bread…it was sheer luck that I was not close enough to be splattered with the glass. It took me an hour to clean up the glass and deposit the unit safely into the original box. Glass shards were all over my kitchen.
Report Update 6/30/22: At my request, Spectrum representative “[REDACTED]” with the warranty division of Spectrum Brands, returned my request for a call. One of my questions was to be advised whether there had been other incidents e.g. explosions that blew off the door, shattering glass for six feet. I am awaiting word whether they want to have the damaged unit shipped to them so their Engineering and Quality Control team could examine it.
I was very disturbed to learn that whatever they learn is “proprietary” and would not be released to the public. So there is no way to know how frequently this happens or has happened. I saw on your website reports of fires, of units being turned off, but not really turning off. The units were not identified as to model.
I do not think this type of information should be withheld from consumers. I could easily have been badly injured or blinded when the glass door exploded and shattered as I was approaching the unit to retrieve the toast.
This is the second item, manufactured in China (which has special protections), that was defective to the point of causing damage to my wood flooring. The US company did not cover this damage, only a replacement. It took me six months, working with an attorney, to receive payment to cover replacing my flooring. This was a brand new dehumidifier…the shut-off failed when the bucket became too full.
Consumers need protection!
Report Update 8/22/22: They have not been responsible in either acknowledging the danger this product put me in—and potentially others, as well. The glass could have hit my face and eyes. They refused to give information about whether or not this has happened to other customers using the same or other Black & Decker toaster ovens. They requested I keep the unit until they decided whether or not they wanted to examine it to determine the reason for the explosion. There was no reply until I sent the email below (seven weeks later) on August 6th and then they sent only a label. Nothing that acknowledged their interest or concern.
> June 13, 2022 - I reported the explosion and sent pictures. > June 28, 2022 - I called to ask about returning the unit…[REDACTED](Engineering and Quality Control) called me and said there had not been enough time for them to know whether they wanted the unit to examine. > > August 6, 2022 - I still have the large box in my dining room, waiting to hear back from [REDACTED] whether Engineering and Quality Control wants to figure out why the new toaster oven exploded the second time it was used. > I am feeling that no one cares. I was fortunate enough not to have the glass blow up in my face, but it seems that is what will be necessary for it to get attention.

No incident, no one hurt Made Nov 20, 2021, sent to the company Nov 23, 2021, published by CPSC Dec 8, 2021
The product, in the report: Black and Decker Toaster Oven. The product was black with a glass front door, 1 cooking grate and two levels on which the grate could be placed. The control panel was silver plastic with a turn knob for temperature, cook mode, and time. The timer was a manual ticking timer that sounded a bell upon completion. There was a red light that would be illuminated when the unit was actively cooking.
Following use the heating coils in a toaster oven failed to turn off, despite the control knob being in the off position and the “on” light being off. My wife had cooked something in the toaster oven and had removed the product after the “bell” sounded indicating the oven had completed its cooking cycle. She then removed the food and left the kitchen, ultimately later going to bed. I arrived home to a slight odor of smoke with no visible haze. I noted the toaster oven was still producing a high level of heat and that some plastic cook ware on top of the oven was starting to melt. The heating coils were noted to be red hot but the control knobs were off and stayed on even when the control knob was moved to the on position and then back to the off position. I removed the cord from the wall outlet and noted both the cord and the plug to be very hot and the plastic/rubber appeared to be in the very early stages of melting. The toaster oven was located on a stone counter top with wooden cabinets approximately 9-12 inches above it.

The product, in the report: 2 slice toaster oven/broiler
The consumer placed the toaster on the “toast setting”, using 2 control knobs. A 3rd setting for the shade of the toast, was set to “medium”.
The consumer went to another floor in her home and noticed a burning odor. She has a bi-level home and said approximately 30 minutes or less, may have passed before she became aware of the burning odor. She never heard the ring from the toaster and forgot that she put in a piece of toast. The consumer went upstairs into the kitchen, but was unsure what was burning. The kitchen and living room were filled with smoke and the bedrooms had lesser smoke in them. The consumer went outside and she could smell smoke outside. She went back in and saw the window of the toaster oven was black. She then realized that it was the toaster oven causing the smoke and burning odor. The toaster oven was off and had finished it’s cycle. She immediately unplugged it from the wall outlet.
She opened her house to clear out the smoke. When she opened the toaster oven, the toast was burned and black in color.
The following day, she still had to continue airing out her home.
The toaster did not appear to be included in any recalls on www.cpsc.gov
Please note that I have contacted the manufacturer Black and Decker. The manufacturer sent a replacement toaster. (At the time I reported, I had not told the manufacturer.)

The product, in the report: Black and Decker 4-slice Toaster Oven
My son was making toast in our Black and Decker toaster oven (Model No TO1356SG. It was set to “Toast”, and he did a timed toast. The toaster dinged (meaning that it was done), but he wasn’t able to get the toast out right away. Some time later, our smoke alarms went off, which led us to discover that the toast was on fire inside the toaster oven. I unplugged the oven and threw a fire blanket over it, and the flames did not spread.
I am reporting this because there is no reason why the toaster oven should have become hot enough to ignite the toast inside. It was not on the bake function, and should not have been on anymore (since it had dinged).

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Countertop Convection Oven 12” pizza capacity
In June of 2018, I replaced my former Black and Decker digital convection toaster oven with this new, out of the box, Black and Decker countertop convection toaster/oven (Model TO1640B). I purchased this current oven at BIG LOTS on North 72nd St in Omaha, NE in 2013. (I stored it a few years because I thought my former toaster oven was failing, but discovered a button stuck on it, and once that was corrected the oven lasted another 5 years). After some months of using this current oven, it became apparent that there was some design flaws that gave me concern of its safety and potential fire hazard. Two main problems have occurred repeatedly over the past few months, and it wasn’t until recently that the oven was discovered ON and Very hot after having supposedly shut off over an hour prior. This occurs in one of 2 ways: 1. If you are wanting to toast or heat and item for less than 10 minutes (as in a 2-3 minutes to toast an item and fail to turn the dial for the toast/timer far past 20 and then counter clockwise to the 2-5 minutes, the unit will stay on at whatever temperature the dial setting for TEMP is at, and will remain on for an infinite time. (this happened most recently on Sunday December 30, 2018, though it has happened on other occasions prior). with this incident an piece of bread still remained in the oven and upon smelling the burning some long hour or so later, it became evident the oven was still ON. Even though the appliance has a note to turn past 20 before setting the time, this seems haphazardly dangerous and has no safety measure to assure an operator has done so. The oven will operate in the ON once the dial deviates slightly from the OFF point on the dial.
2. The second way this oven inadvertantly remaining ON unknown to the operator is that if you manually turn the TIMER/TOAST dial to the OFF point, it does not stop there, it will continue past the OFF point and turn the oven back in the ON status. You do not have to turn it counterclockwise to the point where it says STAY ON for the oven to be turned back on with out noticing. You think you have turned the oven OFF because an audible bell dings when you get to what you would think is OFF, except the dial doesn’t have much of a safe check to keep you from overturning it. I want to emphasize that you can just slightly over turn it counter-clockwise and it will turn the oven back on. Rotate it another half inch counter clock wise and you will reach the STAY ON point of the control. The big problem here is you don’t have to turn it all the way to STAY ON point for the oven to return ON, it only has to be just slightly a jar the OFF point. I keep my oven in a large appliance garage. The door is open and has very adequate ventilation around it and above to operate safely. A problem occurred when the unit was presumed off and the door was shut to the garage. It’s not a safe appliance and I have removed it from my kitchen. I spoke with Black and Decker consumer services regarding my concern and that do not intend to take any action over the matter. I have asked that my complaint be brought to the attention to there product engineers and follow up with me. There has been no correspondence what so ever.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker TO1950SBD “Six slice Toaster Oven”
I was using a Black and Decker Toaster Oven Model # TO1950SBD in my kitchen. I prepared some food with it and the food was removed before the timer dinged based upon the appearance of the food through the glass. The food was handed to the person who wanted it but then I couldn’t turn the timer off, and it was running red hot. So I unplugged it to let it cool off to see if I could get it to reset itself, but unfortunately as soon as I plugged it back in it went straight to red hot. I cannot get the timer to work, and I cannot get it to regulate the temperature any longer. I am afraid to use it again. Luckily nothing was damaged and nobody got hurt.

Our son was using a Black and Decker TO1313SBD Toaster Oven on the morning of 12/24/2017 to toast a bagel. The unit’s front glass panel exploded when toasting a bagel into many pieces. We have contacted Stanley Black and Decker twice since the incident and only received a canned response to first contact their support line. When calling the support line they did not take a report. Onlyl offered a refund or replacement. We don’t care about the money and definitely do not want a replacement. I researched Amazon reviews and have found that this problem had been reported dto them previously by other customers. Our son was dressed for work with a heavy flannel workshirt and [REDACTED] jackeet on. If he hadn’t been dressed with thick clothes he would have been seriously hurt from sharp glass shards.

My approximately two-year-old Black & Decker toaster oven, Model #TO1950SBD, failed to turn off when I turned it off with the dial even though it ‘dinged’. I did not notice this and went out for about two hours. When I came home and went into the kitchen, I immediately noticed that the area around the oven was hot. I saw that the oven was still on and I tried to turn it off but could not. I unplugged it and it was so hot it burned my hand (not seriously, just a blister).
I hate to think what would have happened if I had been gone all day. I think it would have caught fire and burned the house and killed my two dogs.

Black & Decker Toaster oven caught fire & nearly burned my kitchen cabinets. The control timer is DEFECTIVE!!! When turned “OFF” it goes a tiny bit further to “STAY ON”!!! This is INSANE !!! It’s counter-intuitive. One automatically turns a control button all the way OFF and the “ding” means it’s off. BUT THIS STUPID PRODUCT HAS A TINY MARK THERE THAT MEANS “STAY ON” !!!!’ This may work in China but not here. It has happened to me TWICE.
THEY THOUGHT they fixed it by adding the “ding” to alert user of the “stay on” feature, but Just the opposite occurs!! In this culture the “ding” means “ok it’s off” Instead the house is on fire.
MAKE THEM CHANGE IT!!! Otherwise a sweet product

The product, in the report: Toast-R-Oven by Black & Decker
On Sunday afternoon on January 29th my brother, [REDACTED], placed food to heat in a Black & Decker countertop over (a Toast-R-Oven) model and about 30 seconds after he turned on the unit fumes poured out the vents and a fire ignited inside. This appliance is several years old. (I think it is about 2 years old, but he believes it is closer to 5 years old so I using his estimated date). My brother told me he purchased the counter top oven in new condition at a local store in Hastings, Nebraska. He said he cannot recall the name of the retailer right now, but suspects it was Walmart where he frequently shops. I carefully looked over the unit after the incident and could not find a serial number or a UPC code anywhere on the exterior.
I turned off the electricity and turned down the unit. The fire lasted inside the oven for about 3 minutes before dying out. It was a fire (not a spark) and it blazed inside the product but did not consume the food item. I did not open the door, and fortunately the flames did not spread into the kitchen. However, a noxious odor and smoke permeated the area for several hours. I had contacted Black & Decker’s website about 2 weeks earlier when I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the appliance and the heating element growing very white inside. Their customer service online chat/text service had referred me to an online vendor, support@spectrumbrands.com but I had not contacted that email since my brother had resumed using the unit and did not consider it unsafe to use. I had noticed it seemed to emit a smoky odor during use. I did report the problem to the spectrumbrands email immediately on Sunday but have not yet received a response.
I wanted to contact you now because I am concerned about the safety of the product. The oven quite literally burst into flames in front of me on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, I did not open the door- if I had, I think we would have had a potentially serious kitchen fire. We have since discontinued using the unit and it is available for technical inspection if desired.

On January 16, 2017 my toaster over caught fire. It is a Black & Decker. At the time of the incident, my wife was making toast in it. She was watching TV and noticed a bright image in the corner of her eye. As she turned to her right she could see the device on fire.
She rushed over and unplugged it and then called 911. She was told to vacate the property. The first responder was a police officer who entered our home into the kitchen. A few minutes later the fire department arrived and took charge of the situation. The only damage the property sustained was smoke. The house is fine and my wife is OK.

The product, in the report: Toaster Convection Oven
I have put my family in danger for the very last time due to this toaster oven. This product is dangerous and will no longer be used in my home. The timer does not shut off. I’ve had occasions where my food has burned beyond recognition or when I think I’ve turned it off it continues to heat up to the point of danger. The case of the toaster oven heats up and I have been protecting my counter tops by placing it on a wooden cutting board.
Why has this product not been recalled? Does someone have to lose their life or their home before action will be taken. The unit is going into the trash today. I often will send items to the local mission if I’m no longer using them. There is no way that I would put someone else in danger.
I’ve read other similar complaints. This unit will cause a fire if not attended to.
Thank you, Barbara Puleri

This oven came on by itself when my power came back on after a brief outage - and it was on at the highest temp and would NOT shut off from the on/off button. Had I not been at home and smelled it, it would have burned my house down. When I found it, I could only shut it off by unplugging, and it was so hot I had to grab it and quickly yank the cord out because the plug was so hot to the touch it felt like it was almost melted. It is BLACK inside now, where it was just nice and silvery before. I know it is no longer in warranty, but it isn’t even 3 years old yet and should not be failing this soon. IT IS A FIRE HAZARD. I’ve had toaster ovens last for years; nothing like this has ever happened. .

We received the Black and Decker toaster oven as a gift in September. I was heating some tortilla chips in my Black and Decker toaster oven. I heard my son’s friend yell, “It’s on fire.” The inside of the toaster oven was on fire. It smelled like an electrical fire. I was afraid that the flames would catch my wooden cabinets on fire. I unplugged the toaster oven. I didn’t open the toaster oven up, but dumped baking soda on the oven, and, eventually, inside the oven on the fire. We came very close to having a house fire!!! I am furious that this appliance put my family’s life and our home in danger!!!

I have a Black & Decker oven, model #CT0650. It recently gave me an electric shock by just touching the handle. I unplugged it immediately When my husband came home from work, he tested it with a meter and found that the outside of the oven was ”live.” I contacted Black and Decker and received a phone call from [REDACTED]. He said there was nothing they could do because it was out of warranty but offered me a discount on a new one. I found this response very irresponsible. This is a dangerous issue. (photos) Here is what we found after taking the side panel off the oven. My husband, an electrician, believes the terminal block, which has melted, is underrated for this oven. Without taking it apart further, his theory is, that during the melting process, one or more of the screws may have “floated” down making contact with the metal frame of the oven. Even if his theory is incorrect, this should be of concern to someone! There were no signs that this melting was accurring No smell or smoke and the oven was operating as it should. Even though the shock hurt tremendously, my ears popped and I had chest pain for approximately an hour, had I NOT been shocked, this melting could have continued without our knowledge and turned into a fire. Also, it was fortunate that it was me that got shocked, as my husband has epilepsy and who knows how he could have been affected. We have used the oven responsibly. It has never been dropped or abused in any way. It has never even been moved from it’s present location. It has always worked well and we’ve been pleased with it otherwise.

We bought a Black and Decker infrawave toaster oven about a year ago from Deals Only. Yesterday it turned on by itself and wouldn’t turn off. I had to unplug it to get it off. Sparks flew. I let it set over night and tried using it again. When I plugged it in, it turned on. None of the display buttons seem to work and I cannot turn it off except by unplugging it and seeing sparks fly.

My toaster oven went on fire, last night, for the THIRD time which includes TWO brand NEW replacements.. It was on “toast” mode. Very scary. Thank God that I was standing right next to it. I heard a “whoosh” and then saw fire coming out of the toaster oven door. The apartment filled with smoke within minutes.
I would LOVE if the company sent me back a refund. I have the receipt. I paid, with tax, $65.29. That’s the LEAST they could do ... I’m just grateful that my apartment didn’t go on fire.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Countertop Convection Oven Model # TO1675B
I have a Black & Decker Convection Toaster Oven, Model #TO1675B. I made toast this morning and when I left the room, my smoke detector went off. Apparently, something is wrong with the electronics in this oven, because there was no way to turn it off. The heat stayed on and the only way to turn it off was to unplug it. I never had this problem before. If I would have left my home, it would have probably caused a house fire, because it was extremely hot. Hot enough to set off my smoke alarm. This oven is only one year old. I believe that Black and Decker needs to recall this item.

The product, in the report: Toaster Oven Information off of the plug: ETI CAT-07 E143469
The consumer stated that an incident happened with the first toaster oven in 2013.
The consumer stated that piece of toast caught on fire.
The consumer contacted the manf and they asked the consumer to cut off and return the end of the cord. The consumer was provided a replacement toaster.
The consumer stated that he started using the replacement toaster and the same exact incident happened with the replacement toaster in Jan/Feb 2015.
The consumer stated that he put in 4 pieces of bread to toast. The consumer turned the setting knob 2/3 way. The consumer stated that he went into another room and then smelled smoke few minutes later. The consumer went to the toaster and noticed that the toast had caught on fire. The consumer unplugged the toaster, opened the door and tried to suppress the fire. The consumer moved the toaster outside and dumped it in the snow.
The consumer stated that the toast setting knob is supposed to also act as a timer and eventually turn off the toaster after certain time (depending on the setting of toast). The consumer stated that the spring failed in the knob and failed to turn on the timer. The toaster stayed on the same setting until the consumer got to the toaster and unplugged it.
The consumer stated that this is exactly how the toast caught on fire in the first toaster as well.
The consumer contacted the manf in regards to this incident as well. They sent him a pre-paid mailing label and box to return the toaster. The consumer will be provided a refund.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker 12 inch Toaster Oven
We have a Black & Decker Toaster Oven approximately 5 to 7 years old. Here are all the numbers on the bottom of the oven: CAT. No. cto612ob -- type1 -- miramar -- fl. 33027 --no.1335.1&1335.2.9 -- 3099249. This number is on the end of the cord that goes into outlet -- 747x0.
You turn the oven on, then when it is supposed to stop automatically, it keeps moving to the position of stay on. which means the oven will then stay on until you shut it off, but if you put it to the off position, it will move again to stay on. Therefore it will not turn off and it will stay on until it is unplugged.
We have tried numerous times to let it shut off by itself, but it will not. So therefore we feel like it would be a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Digital Advantage Series Countertop Oven/Broiler model CTO8500
We had received a new Black & Decker countertop oven/broiler (model CTO8500) as a Christmas gift a few years ago. Having no need for it at that time, we put it in storage. Yesterday our toaster stopped working and instead of buying a new one, we decided to get this toaster oven out of storage. We inboxed it cleaned it with a damp soft cloth and placed it on the counter. I left the door open and the unit unplugged to insure it was fully dry prior to operating it. After about a half hour, I closed its door and plugged it in. I set the time on the unit and decided to turn it on to make sure all was functional for tomorrow morning breakfast. After being on for about 30 seconds, I heard a loud “pop” followed by smoke. I quickly disconnected the unit from power and ventilated the kitchen. Upon further investigating, it appeared that the top rear heating element exploded leaving white powder everywhere. I can’t believe B&D would sell such an unsafe product.

The product, in the report: convection countertop oven
I purchased a Black & Decker convection/toaster oven last summer. I have only used it about 4 or 5 times. Last night, the glass door oven exploded for no apparent reason.
I was baking lobster cakes at 400 degrees. I pre-heated the oven for about 10 minutes and then baked the food for about 10 minutes when I heard a big crashing noise. When I went into the kitchen, I found a zillion little pieces of the glass door all over my kitchen counter and floor. The small piece of “door” left is filled with cracked glass, too, and I am afraid even to pick up the toaster oven and throw it out.

This morning, as I was getting ready for work and making coffee (coffee machine hangs from the cabinet atop the toaster oven, but not resting on it), I must’ve inadvertently turned the toaster oven on (not sure how this happened), and came home to find the apt smelling of smoke. (It still does.) People on my floor called the Super, he had my keys, and found the apartment FILLED with smoke. He said in another few minutes, the place would’ve gone up in flames. The area around the toaster was red hot. They opened all the windows for about 30 min. to let the smoke out. The intense heat melted the coffee machine and needless to say that and the toaster are both ruined (a small price to pay for my carelessness).

The consumer’s mother had taken 1/3 of a sausage link and placed it in the microwave to defrost. After defrosting, the consumer’s mother placed the sausage link on a foil. The consumer’s mother placed the foil and the sausage in the toaster oven to cook the sausage further. The consumer’s mother was standing to the left of the toaster oven, near her stove, when she looked over at the toaster to check on the timer. The consumer’s mother noticed the oven door glass bubble out, so she ran over and turned off the oven. As soon as the consumer’s mother took two steps to the left of the oven, the oven door glass exploded sending shards of glass all over her kitchen. The explosion also blew off the handle to the door. The handle landed on the floor near the oven.
Consumer’s mother panicked and called the neighbor over. The neighbor took photos of the incident and cleaned up the glass from the kitchen. The neighbor stayed with the consumer’s mother until the consumer arrived there.
The consumer’s mother is 82 years old. The consumer’s mother did not receive any injuries in the incident and did not need any medical attention.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer who was willing to send a replacement oven. The manufacturer also informed the consumer that if she can find a receipt, they will return the full purchase price. Otherwise, they would give her a check of $64.42. The consumer was also told that the manufacturer might want the product back for investigation. The consumer stated that she will keep the product with her for 30 days.

I am once again writing to inform the public of yet another fire we experienced while making toast on 6/11/13, with our free replacement Black & Decker Countertop Oven. Needless to say, after three different model replacement ovens from Black & Decker (Model #TR0480BS on 7/5/10 and Model# TR0480BS on 2/23/11, referred to in Report No. 2011 0323-6D9C3-1172288 filed with the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission and recent Model# TR04075B with a QC Pass 2 sticker on it), I am totally convinced- Black and Decker/ aka Applica- is making junk. At one time, I had confidence in buying the Black and Decker brand, but no more. The fact that we live in a throw away society and the fact that the government does not recall these products is appalling to me. To make matters worse, the internet is full of reviews concerning fires with these products and they continue to remain on the shelf. After filing and researching my two previous complaints, which requested an investigation into this matter, I was told that only the most serious complaints are investigated. Therefore, the products remain on the shelf. The remedy to the problem was two-fold. I could either file another complaint and/or stop buying the product. Needless to say, I filed another complaint, bought the #1 rated toaster oven, and will never buy an appliance from Black and Decker again.

The end result was the toast oven catching on fire. I sustained burns to my hands while moving the burning toaster outside.
I have tested the Timer/Toast control knob and it does not properly cut power as designed.

After working correctly for first few months of ownership, The timer began having issues with shutting off. The timer would not shut off and the oven kept heating. Even after it was unplugged the timer continued to run. When it was plugged back in the area around the controls began smoking (electrical component burnt smell) and got very hot. Un-plugged and tried exercising the timer knob, tried plugging it back in and it again began to smoke. Un-plugged it and permanently put it out of service.

Mechanical timer usually shuts off at end of set time. Timer now continues past zero until it reaches the “Stay On” position on the dial. This turns the unit on - even if empty and unattended - creating a fire hazard!

I have a Black and Decker Classic Line toaster oven broiler. When it is toasting you hear it ticking and the blue indicator light is on. When it’s finished the bell rings, the ticking timer stops, and the blue light goes out. The timer doesn’t always work, Sometimes the ticking stops partway through or never starts. But the blue indicator light and the heat are on. So toast gets burnt. I have to stay with the toaster and listen for the ticking to know the timer is on or else it might just keep toasting until the smoke alarm goes off.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker toaster/convection
Dear US CPSC,
I’d like to report a problem with a Black and Decker toaster/convection oven that I believe is a hazard. This is in reference to Model #CT04400B Type 1. This toaster oven has a unique issue with its on/off button. If you turn the dial ever so slightly past the off setting, the toaster oven remains on, and I believe that this is a significant fire hazard. We found that frequently, the toaster oven would remain on for very long periods of time and get very, very hot. It was very easy to mistaken leave the oven in the on setting, when you meant to tum it off. I have enclosed a couple of pictures of what I mean.
I wanted to let your organization know about this dangerous appliance.

I purchased a Black & Decker toaster oven, model TO1420, on 9/26/2012. It initially seemed to work well. Over the past two months, we have discovered the appliance “on” when all the controls are at the “off” position, several times. This has happened erratically. However, since the second occurence, we have unplugged the device when not in use. When it it is plugged in the heat comes on, even though the controls are set at the off position.
I believe this represents a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Toaster oven
I have used Black & Decker toaster ovens for years. Sometime in late summer I noticed a toaster oven with a timer which I thought would be a helpful feature so I purchased one- I believe the model number TO1412B. I gave the old toaster oven to a family that had lost everything in a fire. The first few times I used the toaster oven I had no problems but then I was summoned to the kitchen by the smoke alarm. On arrival I noted smoke and flames coming from the toaster oven. When I grabbed the handle to pull it away from the wall to unplug it (as the instructions state) I sustained 1st degree burns on the back of my fingers. When the fire was extinguished the inside the toaster oven was covered in a layer of black soot. The charred remains of the bread I had attempted to toast sat on the rack. Although I was fairly sure I had set the timer I couldn’t be certain. I cleaned the toaster as well as I could and tried to use it while I stood by and observed, it worked as intended. Thinking that I had been mistaken about setting the timer I didn’t return it at that point. I used it a few times after that but was always hovering nearby observing because I didn’t trust it and then it happened again i.e. the timer reached time zero and failed to turn the toaster off- I returned the toaster oven to Walmart and was given a replacement which has worked OK for the last 3 months. Since I ‘ve had toaster ovens in the past I note that the temperature selection knob is not as tapered at the selection end as it was on previous models. This makes it a bit difficult to see the temperature it points to at a quick glance. I have since painted a dot on the temperature selection end. Nor do I like the fact the the heating element seems to come on at full power to get the unit up to the set temperature as this results in burning any items that are on the rack when the machine is turned on.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Convection toaster oven digital read out controls.
To whom it May Concern,
I am sending this note for the safety of others that might buy the following.
I purchased the B&D digital Convection Toaster Oven Model #T06335BSP and was very dissatisfied with this toaster oven. I have tried several other brands to replace the T/O that broke due to the use that I got out of it in the past several yrs. All the other brands that I bought and tried out I had to return due to size and poor performance. My toaster oven that I am replacing was a B&D that I had for years and was very satisfied with, then the bottom elements burnet out I guess from all the use that I got out of it.
Here is the situation that I experienced the other day with the new B&D mentioned above. I decided to bake a pie in it being it was a little larger then the old one and wouldn’t have to heat up the big oven plus it fit the pie just fine. Well I went to pull the rack out with the pie on it to turn so it would bake evenly being the back was getting done faster then the front. I pull the rack out and the rack dropped out of the side slot that holds it, being surprised that this happened so quick I went to grab the pie so it would not spill all over the oven and even though I had pot holders I burnt my hand trying to put the rack back in the slot then the when I lifted it up and put it back in the other side fell out. Now if I had something that had any grease or something that had any kind of liquid that would burn quickly I would of started a fire and more then likely the cabinets above the oven would of started to burn and would have been a disaster to me and my mother who cannot walk and would have had a very hard time getting out of the house with out my assistance. I am going to write to the consumer protection dept suggesting that this toaster oven be recalled due to the fact that the rack that is used in this oven is not sturdy enough to put any kind of full size pie or casserole that has any weight to it because it will make the rack fall right out of the slots in the side of the oven and can cause a real hazard for the person using it and even cause a fire that would not be able to control quickly and could cause a house fire.
Please respond to this email being I am really concerned that this might happen to an elderly person and could cause a real bad situation.
Thank You [REDACTED]

Black&Decker model TO1675W convection counter top oven The outside top of the oven reached 380 degrees F by digital thermometer while just cooking toast. The Applica company that seems to make or distribute it has many warnings in the manual, but the top surface temperature is inherently hazardous to the elderly who may have alzheimer’s, etc. I returned the oven to Walmart and got my money back.
Fortunately, my wife didn’t get burned. All of these ovens should be recalled to avoid burns. The problem seems to be a perforated guard over the heater rods that reflects most of the infrared onto the steel case and dangerously overheats it.

6/30/2012) The consumer stated that there are 3 knobs on the toaster. The bottom knob would be the timer. He placed the unit on the toast setting and it started to count down. The unit usually makes a chime sound at the end, but it never did. He started to smell smoke and saw it was from the toaster oven. He immediately unplugged the unit to stop the unit from smoking and to completely shut it off. He stated that he was unable to switch off the unit he had to unplug it to power it off.
(7/2/2012) The manufacturer was contacted and a representative advised him that they would send out a brand new unit. The representative didn’t ask any questions in regards to the safety hazard of the toaster nor did he file a report. They also advised him to hold on to the unit for approximately 1 month and after that he should discard it.
The caller received the replacement unit as promised.

The product, in the report: Toaster oven
My toaster oven caught on fire today. I bought it a year or so ago. It was a Black and Decker Series TRO390. About a week ago it burned the toast. Today it burned the toast then started to burn-flames. I turned off the timer (don’t think it was working properly, but I don’t stand there looking at the toaster). I pulled the plug. Still flaming. I grabbed a box of baking soda and threw chunks of it on the flames, putting them out. I threw the toaster out.
I’m fed up with products of inferior quality made in China. I have 2 ceiling fans where after about 6 weeks I have to replace the light boxes.

The product, in the report: Countertop Oven (toaster oven)
I bought a new Black & Decker toaster oven Model TRO480BS and loved it for 11 days. On day 12, while toasting within normal operation, the timer “dings” and the glass door explodes sending hot glass over the kitchen counter and floor. Glass was found inside, underneath and 4 to 5 feet in front of the unit. Fortunately, no one was in the room.

We were attempting to prepare toast in our toaster oven. After only 1 minute or so we smelled smoke and noticed that the oven and the contents were on fire. We had used the oven a couple of times before and it seemed to take a few minutes to toast bread, similar to other brands.

The product, in the report: Black and Decker Countertop Oven, Model # T01285B
This morning, 4/4/12, I placed an english muffin in the Black and Decker toaster oven (model T01485B) I have in my kitchen. I set the temperature to the “toast” setting, the function to the “toast” setting, and the timer to 20 (recommended in the user manual).
The toaster had been in use for approximately 2-3 minutes when I heard a loud “pop”. I turned around in the kitchen and there was glass all over the counter and kitchen floor. The front glass door of the oven had shattered and thrown glass across the kitchen. I immediately unplugged the toaster and waited for the glass to cool. While I was waiting the glass continued to make crackling/popping sounds.

The product, in the report: Toaster oven/convection oven.
The consumer says that the rack has two adjustable areas. when a pan is on the rack, the rack slips out on one side. she says the rack can get tilted which can cause a burn hazard. She says there is no catch on it, so when the door is open the rack can slip out and fall on the floor or on her foot because there is no stop on it. She says it has a label that said “caution hot surface”. She says it gets hotter than any other oven she has ever had which concerns her of how much insulation it has. The consumer says the unit takes twice as long to cook anything whether broiling or baking. The consumer sent the company an email this morning. She has gotten a confirmation back that they have gotten her email and will respond to her.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker countertop oven model TRO480BS toaster oven
On 2/12/2012 I bought a Black & Decker countertop oven at Sear’s. The model number is TRO480BS. I used it for the second time (3/13/2012) today to toast a bagel. All three knobs were on the correct settings for toasting. The timer has a picture of a bagel which must be a couple of minutes. The timer went off and I took the bagel out. As I walked away the glass door exploded sending hundreds of tiny pieces of glass all over my kitchen. I luckily, recently bought metal shelving unit and had placed the oven lower than counter height and away from the high traffic area in my kitchen. If I would have had this on the regular height kitchen counter the glass would have exploded onto my face arms and chest. When I realized what had just happened I stepped on some pieces of glass and sustained several minor cuts on the bottom of my feet not realizing I was barefoot. I found the receipt and booklet and called Black & Decker immediately. They were apologetic and said they would send a new oven out to me or a refund. I took the replacement oven but am curious about incidents you may have received on this model oven. They would forward my incident to engineering. What I would like to know if this is an isolated incident or if there are other reports of this problem. Most ovens and toasters are kept at very little distance from one’s face and body on a regular height kitchen counter. An incident like mine would have sent me to the hospital with cuts on my arms and face.

The product, in the report: Black & Decker Model TO1216B Toaster/Convection Oven
We purchased a Black & Decker TO1216B Toaster/Convection oven on 1/28/12. When using it on 2/26/12, the glass door shattered and “exploded” out the front of the oven sending glass pieces as far as 8-10 ft across the kitchen and breaking the door of the oven. We feel that this is a serious safety issue. We contacted Black & Decker with this information but they do not seem concerned about this and want to replace this with another oven model that we have read on-line reviews of the exact same thing happening. It seems they are not taking this issue seriously and I fear that someone will get injured if this issue is not addressed.

The product, in the report: This is a Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven with 3 black dials on the right side for Temperature, Function, and Toast-Timer. There is also a red bead that lights up when the appliance is in use. The bottom says it is made in China, , Applica Consumer Products, Inc. Miramar Fl USA 33027. It also says it is ETL listed, and it has a small white sticker that says QC10 passed.
I have had 2 Black & Decker toaster ovens, of different models, cause a fire in the unit in the past 6 to 8 months. In each case I put a piece of bread in to toast, and the bread caught fire. The first time I was in the room and turned to see flames 3 or 4 inches high rising from the toast, blackening the outside of the oven door and creating smoke throughout the house. I was using the controls appropriately for toast and had the timer turned to a short time period.
The second time, yesterday, I was in another room, smelled burned toast and found the toaster with black smoke marks at the door, the toast charred with an ember still orange until I put is in the sink and ran water on it. I was using the toaster the correct way, with a short time set for toast.
Yesterday I was toasting a slice of Portuguese sweet bread with raisins. That may have been the sam bread I used when the first toaster oven fire occurred, but I don’t remember for sure.
