Blending a protein shake (powder and water, 3 small ice cubes) in my Cuisinart Velocity Ultra blender which has been used less than 10 times in the past couple years. No one hurt Made Oct 28, 2021, sent to the company Nov 1, 2021, published by CPSC Nov 16, 2021
The product, in the report: Cuisinart Smart Stick model CSB-76. Hand held immersion wand blender for making smoothies. 14.5 inches long. Comes apart into 2 parts: the motor and power piece; and the metal shaft and blade side.
While using my Cuisinart Smart Stick immersion blender (model CSB-76) a sharp and jagged pointed piece of metal broke off of it into the soft food I was blending (banana, milk smoothie). It appears to be similar to a thin washer 12-13 mm in diameter. I think it came from where the thin rotating metal shaft goes inside the wider, outer housing metal shaft. It was just luck this piece wasn’t injested where it surely would have lacerated either mouth or digestive tract. I spoke with Cuisinart customer support and described. I was offered 20% off a new tool but told it was out of warranty and also discontinued so there were no repair parts available. I asked if they make reports to CPSC and was told the phone calls are recorded so ‘they would hear this’. Obviously CPSC isn’t listening to a private business so I’m not sure what that meant.
There are a LOT of similar smart stick metal breakage reports here on CPSC, surely it was reached threshold for followup?

No one hurt Made Sep 29, 2021, sent to the company Oct 1, 2021, published by CPSC Oct 18, 2021
The product, in the report: Cuisinart A Smart Stick 2 speed steel hand blender with chopper and whisk attachments. Model CSB-79
I was making a “smoothie” as I do several times a week, using my Cuisinart 2 speed, stainless steel hand blender. The smoothie contained fresh watermelon, yogurt and thawed blueberries. These items were in the clear container that comes with the unit. As I was using blending I heard a slight change in sound, stopped blending and checked the blades on the blending shaft. They were gone! I checked through the smoothie and could not find them. I then used a strainer (twice) and finally found the two very sharp 1” steel blades. If I had not heard the sound and checked I would have suffered extreme internal damage from drinking the smoothie. The very sharp blades would have cut me inside. I reported this to the company. All they said was the product is discontinued, it is out of warranty, but said I could purchase a new shaft from them. Also, the product is still on the market. Had I been talking to my husband while using the blender, I would not have heard the change in the whirring sound. Usually, I don’t check the blades after I have made the smoothie. I drink it and later wash the blender shaft where the blades are. I luckily missed serious internal injuries. Someone else might not be so luck--this item is often used by parents to prepare food for young children.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Smart Stick Immersion Blender Model CSB-76BC
I was using a Cuisinart Smart Stick Immersion Blender to blend cooked tomatoes. The sound of the blender changed and I noticed the tomatoes were not being cut up. I unplugged the blender to examine it and discovered the blade was missing. I searched my cabinet for the blade and couldn’t find it. I then strained the tomato chunks and initially did not find the blade. Finally I used a metal spoon to search the tomato chunks and found 1/2 the blade and then eventually the other half. The blade had broken into two pieces and each half was hidden in a tomato chunk. I had to discard the cooked tomato chunks due to the possibility of small pieces of metal in it. I was not injured.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Smart Stick 2 speed hand blender (immersion blender)
I own a Cuisinart immersion blender that I use exclusively for smoothies made with fresh fruit. Twice, the blade has broken in 2 while blending. The first time , a couple of years ago, I heard the blade in the container & was able to fish it out before swallowing. The last time, approximately 6 weeks ago, I almost swallowed & this was with a replacement shaft & blade. I again contacted Cuisinart with all pertinent info & their only response is that it is “out of warranty.” I believe this is a serious design flaw, since this has now happened twice. I cannot believe there have not been other reports of serious injury due to this. Photos are available if needed.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Smart Stick immersion blender, model CSB75(AD)
I recently purchased a Cusiinart Smart Stick immersion blender Model CSB75(AD) and had used it perhaps a half dozen times for normal kitchen blending activities. I noticed one day that half of the very sharp blade had broken off and was missing.
As you can imagine we were worried that the shards may have been swallowed since we can´t find the missing half of the blade. It does not appear that any injuries occurred.
Upon further review, it appears that this defect has been noted by other consumers according to comments on Amazon.com.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart SmartPower Premier Blender Model # CBT-500W (TX) / CBT-500WC (TX)
I was using my Cuisinart SmartPower Premier Blender Model #CBT-500W (TX)/CBT-500WC (TX) to make pesto. I briefly heard a strange noise while using the blender but since it promptly went away, I didn’t think anything of it. A few minutes later when I was pouring the pesto out of the blender and into a container, I saw a white chunk of something. I thought it was an unprocessed clove of garlic and almost dismissed it. I decided to fish it out and discovered it was a piece of the white plastic that houses the blades.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Smart Stick hand-blender (Model CSB-76)
The blade on my Cuisinart “Smart Stick” hand-blender split in half as I was using it to blend cooked fruit in a pot on the stove. (Model CSB-76.) I have contacted Cuisinart by email (with pictures) and by phone, but they said they wouldn’t do anything about it because it is out of warranty. They did not seem concerned about the safety hazard, even though they’re in the middle of a big recall for broken blades on their food processors.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart blender Model CBT 500 (TX) Serial: 80917 j S
My Cuisinart blender almost started a fire! Cuisinart “customer service” will not replace or repair it because it was manufactured in 2008. After all that has occurred with the bad press regarding Cuisinart’s defective blades in their food processors, one would think that they would be proactive and apologetic about a defective and dangerous appliance. The customer service department did not send me to a compliance department or gather any other additional facts about my dangerous situation. 10 hours after the incident - I can still smell the foul burnt stench. The blender’s base broke apart and was flinging scolding hot /smoking parts.
I am appalled at the lack of response and concern Cuisinart representatives showed me.

Cuisinart Smart Stick hand blender, model #CSB-76. Exact location of serial number is unclear, but it is probably either 70807 or E143681. The 3/4 inch long plastic collar surrounding the blade shaft just above the blade itself disintegrated into the food while pureeing well-done steamed cauliflower. An hour-long phone call to Cuisinart was fruitless. I was told they would not provide a replacement blade part as the item is out of warranty. However, they could not even verify which number is the serial number so I have little confidence in their assessment that it is “out of warranty”. Regardless, however, of warranty duration, this is a safety issue. (I am certain that my food processor from the 1990s is out of warranty, but they are still doing a massive recall when those are disintegrating into food.) I understand a warranty limitation covering the motor, etc. in my hand blender, but this isn’t that kind of issue. If it just stopped working I wouldn’t be notifying Cuisinart and requesting a replacement. The problem here is that I almost fed my baby food with hard pieces of plastic in it. Cuisinart should not be so cavalier about this and dismiss my call. Look where that got them with the food processor blades. Unbelievable.

I used the Cuisinart Immersion blender to blend soup. As I poured the soup into bowls, I saw the small blade in the soup. I was lucky to see it before serving it to my grandson. I have called the Cuisinart customer service line 3 times and reported the incident. Each time someone takes the information and says someone from corporate will call me back within 3 days. I have never received a call back. I feel the company should be aware of the danger of this product as it could have resulted in mouth lacerations or worse.

I was using my cuisinart immersion blender model CSB-75 to make a blended juice drink with crushed ice. After I immersed the blender stick into the liquid and turned it on, I noticed that the sound went from a whir to nothing. I pulled it out and looked at the unit. the cord was still plugged in. I poured the liquid into a glass. the two steel blades, detached from the center post, were floating down to the bottom of my glass.
This experience comes 2 months after I had applied for replacement blades for my 2 cuisinart food processors!

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Velocity Ultra 1HP blender in white
I was using the Cuisinart Velocity Ultra 1HP blender model SPB-650 and the blade assembly came unscrewed from the plastic jar while the motor was engaged. I was pulsing cookie crumbs for a dessert and the blade assembly came completely unscrewed from the bottom of the jar, the motor was still turning and the blades were engaged. It spilled cookie crumbs all over the blender base and kitchen and I could have been injured by the blades because they were still rotating. The plastic bottom of the blade assembly where it contacts the motor base became damaged and was shredding plastic threads because it was turning in the base when it shouldn’t be. I am certain the blade assembly was properly tightened and secure on the jar because this same issue happened to me last week when I attempted to make a smoothie and it leaked almond milk all over the counter when I tried to blend. I assumed I hadn’t tightened it correctly the first time it happened. But this time I am certain this is a design flaw and not user error. I will be contacting Cuisinart for a replacement.

Emergency room Made Feb 22, 2016, sent to the company Mar 1, 2016, published by CPSC Mar 15, 2016
The product, in the report: A single serve 350 watt personal blender. It has a razor sharp stainless steel blade that spins with incredible rpm and has no safe guards in place if unit is on and blade is exposed.
I’m writing to inform you of a tragic mishap due to a manufacturing defect. My wife has had a Cuisinart 350 watt smoothie blender (Mod. CPB 300, Ser. 01023), for over two years which she has used almost every day. On the morning of Sunday August 16, 2015 she made her smoothie as normal. However, shortly after start up she heard an unusual sound and turned to find that the plastic blender cup had unscrewed from the blade holder and the ingredients were spewing all about the room. The powerful motor continued to run and the blade was exposed. The blade is positional (only goes into the blender one way) but has no safety interlocks what so ever. She, bowing to her instantaneous reflex came into contact with the blade with her left palm and was severely lacerated, severing 4 tendons and 4 or 5 nerves. I immediately transported her to [REDACTED] ER in [REDACTED]. where she received emergency care to include: 17 stitches, X rays, and a tetanus shot. The Bone and Joint Center of [REDACTED] was contacted and surgery was scheduled. We had a consultation on the 17th and the surgery on August 18, 2015. The surgery required 3 hours at which time tendons were repaired and nerves reattached. We have been informed that she will be in physical therapy for 6 to 9 weeks and probably scared for life. In addition, she will have limited use and sensitivity of at least two fingers. We blame the blender and its total lack of safety interlocks. Her medical bills will soon surpass $25,000, not to mention her pain, suffering and psychological trauma.

While blending ingredients for pumpkin pie the blade apparently broke and came off. I had no idea since you set it upright when not in use or it makes a huge mess. While my pie was baking I went to wash the bowl I had mixed everything in and there was half of the blade stuck on the bottom of the bowl. I just threw out the half baked pie because I cannot find the other half of the blade and I have no idea how many other pieces are in the pie. This item has never been in the dishwasher, and isn’t even used to make smoothies (crushing ice) etc. I use it more like a mixer, always with soft ingredients.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart CSB-76 Smartstick Hand Blender (Immersion Blender), made in China
The incident involves Cuisinart CSB-76 Smartstick Hand Blender. Severe finger laceration requiring approximately 9 stitches occurred after the device failed to turn off while being disassembled. It is possible for the main power switch to be in the “on” position, allowing the blade to continue turning while a second “detach” button is pressed. The detach button is not properly designed, because when pressed, that button should de-energize the appliance before it can be disassembled. I note there have been at least 3 other similar incidents located on the CPSC website, but could find no corrective measures or recalls to date. I recommend that the company be required to recall these devices and install a properly engineered safety interlock device that makes it impossible to energize the blender while it is being disassembled. This would make it impossible for injuries such as this to occur in the future. The instruction manual’s advice to unplug the device is important, but fails to meet widely accepted safety engineering standards. Please advice on CPSC’s action in this matter. Thank you. Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: immersion blender Model #CSB-77
I was using a Cuisinart Smart Stick immersion blender. After use I rinsed it offer using my index finger to clear some sauce from the blade area. As I moved it toward the water I inadvertently pressed the power toggle switch and activated the blender. In less than a second it sliced through my finger three or four times snapping the upper bone in my index finger in half. I immediately knew the injury was significant as the end if my finger was flopping around. As my wife and two boys watched in horror as I wrapped my finger in 5 or 6 paper towels and raced to the hospital.
My injuries required a skilled hand surgeon over an hour and 20 sutures to reconstruct the end of my finger. The end of my finger was severely lacerated. My fingernail had to be removed. My nailbed was ut multiple times.I may require further hand surgery depending on how I heal.
When I told the ER nurse how it happened she said “we’re seeing a lot of those”. This is an unsafe category of products whose on/off switches must be safer for the consumer.
I’ve used immersion blenders for years without any prior incidents. But this one time I let my guard down and this machine mangled my index finger in my dominant hand.
It’s products like these that can define the good work you do for us as consumers. I think it might behoove you to consider implementing stronger safety measures for this type of product. Mine was bad but it could have been even worse. I

On Saturday, December 8th, 2012 the caller was using her stick blender when she began to smell a burning odor and saw a small amount of smoke, she stopped the unit and turned it off.
After the unit cooled off, she removed the attachment and saw that the coupling that connects the attachment and the motor had melted and stripped itself of all threading.
Blender is no longer usable without being a fire hazard and this is why she is reporting.
She contacted the manufacturer Tuesday, December 11, 2012 and was advised by a representative and a supervisor who advised that there is nothing that can be done because it isn’t on warranty and they have no known issues with it.
She did not obtain names.
There have been no injuries

The product, in the report: Hand Blender
I was making guacamole and I noticed that a piece of avocado was stuck under blender blade. Blender was off but plugged in. I used my left index finger to dislodge avocado. As I rotated blade the motor engaged and started. One of the blender blades became embedded in my finger and I could not remove my finger as I realized the blade was probably stuck in the bone. I rinsed off my finger and placed a towel around. My husband rushed me to the ER. The ER doctor had no idea how to remove the blender. My husband went home to retrieve a tin snips and special wide edge pliers. The Dr. and my husband and the male nurse took turns cutting the housing down in sections and removing it like peeling a banana. Then the dr. held onto one blade with a pliers as he rotated the embedded blade to remove it from my finger. Xray was taken and I had a stabilized fracture as a wedge of bone had been cut out from my finger and two tiny bone fragments were visible on the xray. I had to get a tetanus shot. I received several IVs of antibiotics while in ER. I also received two stitches and an RX for 10 days of antibiotics. This happened June 30th, 2012, approximately 4 pm. My biggest concern now is for infection in the bone/stitches area. I am taking the antibiotics and keeping injury as clean as possible. Stitches are to be removed in 7-10 days from injury.

The product, in the report: a Cuisinart immersion/stick blender. The cutter release is on the lower end of the stick and the on/off switch is a pressure switch towards the top. I got this items at a Cuisinart promotion at Tops Friendly Market in Ithaca, NY
I was using a Cuisinart immersion blender and something got stuck in the blade. Unfortunately, I did not unplug it but it was off. I stuck my finger in to dislodge the item, and picked the appliance up. It has a touch/pressure on/off switch on the handle and accidentally turned it on. I dropped it and it turned off, but my finger was severely lacerated. Because I was in the middle of a colonoscopy preparation, I was unable to go to the ER. After the procedure, I sought medical attention. Apparently no bone, nerve or tendon damage, but a long healing process and possible surgery at a later date.

The product, in the report: Cuisinart Smart Stick Blender Turquoise color
I purchased a Cuisinart Smart Stick handheld blender (or immersion blender) from a reputable retailer. Upon using the blender for the first time (when I say first time I mean this particular blender--I have used these before), I read the instructions first. I made a milkshake in the plastic cup provided. I then unplugged the blender and disassembled it as the instructions read. I brought the bottom part to the sink to clean it. I was using my left hand to remove some of the excess shake before rinsing and the blade snapped. I at first thought my thumb was caught between the blades but then looked in horror and saw the blade was imbedded in my thumb. I became hysterical as the blender was stuck to my finger. I called my boyfriend and he calmed me down and talked me through getting the blender blade out of my thumb (I used my right hand and cut my right index finger deeply while doing so). I was bleeding a lot, and wrapped both my thumb and index finger in a white towel. My boyfriend was an hour away so he called my sister who woke her 1-year-old and came to get me. She lives 15 minutes away. She brought me to the emergency room. This was approximately 8:15 pm. I was hysterical because I had no idea how bad my thumb was. They saw me right away at the hospital and said I would need stitches and everything else should be fine. I ended up with 8 stitches to my left thumb and my right index finger was cut deeply but able to be bandaged vs. stitched. I was sent home with care instructions which I have been following (redressing the wound daily, applying Bacitracyn). I was told the stitches can come out 10 days later (Tuesday April 10th). It is Tuesday April 10th today and I don’t think they are ready to come out--but I will check with a doctor. I contacted Cuisinart on Monday April 2nd and they said their Claims Dept. would be in touch within a couple of days. It is now over a week later and I’ve heard NOTHING. I am really angry that their defective product injured me, resulting in a hospital bill, an upcoming doctor’s bill to remove stitches and left me unable to work--I have a home-based skincare studio (go to [REDACTED] for confirmation of this) and had to turn away clients which has been incredibly upsetting.

The product, in the report: Blender to make soup
Purchased Cuisinart “Blend and Cook Soupmaker” for Christmas. Works very well. Used it three times. After third use was placing jar in dishwasher when the loswer lip brushed a plate and 3/4 of the lip fell off. I have photos of the broken part and have retained it for future review if needed. My engineer brother in law viewed the photos and reported “Very clean break. Just what I’d expect of a “brittle material.” The neck is the weak point, but should not be that weak. I’m surprised it would break easily . If it is not a manufacturing defect, then it is poor engineering.” I reported it to Cuisinart but they merely stated that glass was not covered under the warranty. I have ordered a replacement jar and will continue to use it, after careful inspection of the new jar.
My concern is that if the jar had failed in use it could have caused more than just a mess. I am curious as to whether or not any other reports have been made of similar events.
