The product, in the report: Dishwasher
Caller’s dishwasher was in home when purchased it in 2001. Caller states that she never had problems with the unit until Sunday, June 23rd, 2013 when she loaded the dishwasher & started the cycle then went to bed. She woke a bit later, went to the kitchen but then smelled an odor like burning electrical smell with smoke coming out of the dishwasher and more smoke as she opened the dishwasher.
Caller flipped the switch, opened the door, saw water in bottom of dishwasher. The heat was still on. There were no sparks or flames.
The caller does not want this dishwasher anymore due to fear of fire. She realizes she has had use of it for a while but is asking for assistance with purchase of a new dishwasher .
She did contact the manufacturer who confirmed that her unit is not under recall There are no injuries being reported

The product, in the report: Built in Dishwasher
Purchased and had professionally installed GE Dishwasher, Model PDW780PCC was installed the end of May 2010 by Lowe’s.
When using on June 17, 2011, something went wrong with the dishwasher prompting the main circuit breaker to trip, creating a strong odor of burning material within the cupboard enclosure as well as all connecting cupboards.
This in turn shut the dishwasher completely off, All lights, functioning and controls were abrubtly stopped.
I unplugged the dishwasher from the electrical outlet.
The odor of burned material is very strong and the entire home has this smell, but, it is the strongest in and around the cupboards and dishwasher enclosure.
