The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite dishwasher, stainless steel, model 665.13933K015, serial F 22506146, manufactured by Whirlpool in 2012 (according to a whirlpool representative).
Kenmore dishwasher fire at control panel (right top of door) occurred near end of cycle. Flames coming out several inches. Dishwasher was started by my wife just before bedtime, and fire occurred while we were sleeping (smoke detectors in house went in to alarm). The Dishwasher was destroyed, and the countertop was damaged from flames. This event also caused smoke after using the fire extinguisher to put out the flames and significant cleanup of chemical from extinguisher. This fire could have been extensive, and injuries could have been sustained if we were not awakened by smoke detectors. Some electrical fire odor remains 1 week later.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Dishwasher model 587.15233900A, serial number TH11254976, 24 inch, front controls, plastic tub, stainless steel door cover
Our Kenmore dishwasher developed a leak causing water damage to cabinets, and the leak was dripping on the electrical junction box. The leak seemed to be coming from a place on the underside of the dishwasher where there should not be a source of water. I examined the inside of the washer tub and saw that the heating element rod had deformed and drooped down to rest on the plastic tub. The heating rod melted the plastic tub creating a hole and the water could escape. This is a serious defect for at least 3 reasons. One-the tub could have caught fire. Two - the water damage from the leak. Three - a possible electrical short causing electrocution or a fire.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Dishwasher manufactured by Whirlpool
Sears Dishwasher (manufactured by Whirlpool) burning/fire smell. Subsequent to the smell machine is inoperative... dead. The control board in dishwasher is burnt.
This is a known issue per http://www.kitchenaidfire.com/ and DishwasherSettlement.com website. Sears and Whirlpool giving me the runaround.

I have been trying to get this resolved but getting nowhere. I understand this unit is part of a well known event with defective control boards and are a fire hazard. There was a report on WXYZ TV (see https://www.wxyz.com/money/consumer/dont-waste-your-money/find-out-if-your-dishwasher-is-a-fire-risk ) .
I am seeking a replacement unit or similar equitable compensation.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Dishwasher/Black/Stainless Steel.
My wife turned our Kenmore Elite dishwasher on, went to another room to work and I came into the kitchen and smelled electrical fire. I noticed smoke coming from dishwasher. I turned the circuit break off, cleaned out the dishwasher along with the water that did not drain. I opened the control panel and found that the electrical control panel had burned. I wonder why there is not a cover on this board?

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Ultra Wash Dishwasher
Our Sears Kenmore Elite Ultra Wash dishwasher ( Model 66513923K011, S/N F11003868) was operating normally during a washing cycle when suddenly sparks, smoke and fire started shooting out of the washer door handle area. Fortunately, we were there in the kitchen and shut the power off to the washer which stopped the sparks and fire. This could have been a tragic fire incident if we were not there to take immediate action. The washer is fairly new and is one of Sears best models. Also, we just had an appliance repair man here today to check it out and do a repair if possible and were told that the washer is a total loss, not repairable and needed to be replaced with a new one. This seems like a needless large expense to us, as we are both retired and on a fixed income.

The product, in the report: It is a sears kenmore stainless dishwasher with top rolling rack and bottom rolling rack
We have purchased a Sears Kenmore Dishwasher 665-13963KD13. Repeatedly the top rack which is poorly made has cheap plastic male part on the rack that holds the wheels of the rack on. There is too much give side to side movement that causes these cheap plastic clips to break and thus the wheel falls off causing the rack to fall off. The incident that occurred involved my 7 year old who was helping me unload the dishwasher when the top rack fell and caused the glasses to break and get glass inside dishwasher and on floor

smelled electrical fire... found dishwasher had stopped running... 20 amp house breaker tripped. opened front panel on dishwasher door and noted processor board near upper right corner burned up. board had a ribbon cable on it.. I did not note the board serial number (dishwasher has since been disposed of) but from manual believe it was the electronic control that burned. also noted small melt spot on the face of the front door. No one hurt Made Aug 9, 2013, sent to the company Aug 19, 2013, published by CPSC Sep 3, 2013
The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Dishwasher. Manufactured 2004. Purchased 2004. Standard under counter 24” model.
I purchased a Kenmore Dishwasher, Model 655.17032400, Serial Number: FR3601375, on October 17, 2004 at a Sears store in San Rafael, CA. Original receipt receipt shows I paid $461.
On August 7, 2013, without warning, the dishwasher’s control panel caught fire while in use. The circuit breaker didn’t trip. I extinguished the fire by smothering it. Acrid, white smoke continued to pour out of the dishwasher through the vent holes for 15 minutes, despite the control panel unit being fried to a crisp. Although I was home when the control panel burst into flames, I was actually on my way out the door when I heard strange noises emitting from the kitchen: clanking, knocking and hissing. I was alone in the home so I went to investigate the noises. This is when I discovered the dishwasher on fire.
Later, I phoned Sears’ 800 number to inquire about any recalls for this model. Two reps denied any recalls for my dishwasher, however, they happily offered to sell me a replacement control panel for $124. I declined, stating I thought a pro-rated amount would better indicate a show of good faith on their part, but they declined, saying essentially that they were not responsible for the (sealed) control panel catching fire, especially since, as they claimed, there were no reported issues for this problem.
I have since come to find that in fact, Kenmore, Kitchen Aid, and Whirlpool, all under the same umbrella, have documented histories of their respective control panels catching fire (see kitchenaidfire.com).

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Dishwasher
Sears Kenmore Elite Dishwasher was running and flames and smoke started to come out on the upper right hand side of the door below the control panel. My wife opened the door and the flames and smoke stopped within a few seconds. We closed it again to shut it off but within seconds, you could see a bright red glow behind the white plastic front door cover over the control panel on upper right hand side. Opening the door caused the glow to stop within a few seconds. Called Sears and reported this and someone is to contact us.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Dishwasher
Sears Kenmore Dishwasher (model # 665.16039401, serial # FR5201579) caught on fire while running normal dish washing cycle. Fire originated in control panel; pressing cancel button would not stop unit from running; after opening door the unit continued to run spraying water on the ground; the entire time plastic on front of door behind controls was bubbling and blowing smoke. House was quickly filled with smoke from burnt plastic and components. After running to circuit breaker panel and turning off power, smoke and symptoms of fire subsided. Unit was purchased new from Sears retail store in Northeast Mall, North Richland Hills Texas, in 2005. Research on CPSC website and other online sources revealed numerous incidents of same symptoms for this model dishwasher; Sears refused to initiate recall of product despite numerous reports of fires.
Numerous reports of same type of fire for this model dishwasher are listed on-line. My numerous calls to Sears were a waste of time--passed from department to department with no assistance.
Sears always cut-and-pastes the same statement in response to complaints--(“Sears Holdings takes product safety issues very seriously. We investigate each CPSC database incident report. We encourage our customers to provide additional information about incidents to our Customer Care Network, by calling 800-549-4505”)--I am refuting their claim--if Sears took it seriously they would either recall the product or at least warn consumers about the hazard. When we called them about it they did nothing.
If they owned up to the problem I would not be writing this. This product could burn down someone’s house--I was just lucky enough to be home and shut off power to the unit.

The product, in the report: electrical fire in our dishwasher - Kenmore model 66517472300. Seriel Number FR2602312. Fortunately it was caught very early and caused no apparent damage to anything else in the house. Fire department arrived and shut the electrical circuit and checked the device. They suggested we check to see if the unit had been recalled. It does NOT appear that this particular model has been recalled. however, I noticed that similar GE/Kenmore dishwashers (1997 to 2001) WERE RECALLED for risk of electrical fire. our unit is from 2004. So, I thought it would be best to report it, in case others with this model had the same problem.

The product, in the report: Standard size built-in under-counter dishwasher, with stainless interior.
Our 8.5 year old dishwasher (Kenmore Elite Model 665.17464300) suddenly started making an unusual ticking noise while it was running, and in the 10 seconds it took to go to the kitchen to look at it, smoke and flames started coming out of the control panel at the top right side of the door. We splashed some water on it to douse the flames, then got the door open in order to turn it off, then we turned the circuit off to totally cut power to it. The noxious fumes of melting plastics and electronics filled the house for several days. After it cooled down, we opened the control panel off the door, and took some photos. There was a lot of blackened parts, and a wire harness completely burned through. Luckily we were close by, so the countertop didn’t catch fire. (We would often set the timer to run while we’re not home.)
We had no previous problems with the dishwasher, and no indication of anything wrong before this. I did make a report to Sears, but they said this particular model is not recalled.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Dishwasher
Sears Kenmore Elite Dishwasher Model 665.17463300 - shortly after starting the dishwasher the control panel began emitting smoke and strong fumes, then caught fire. There were no problems, symptoms, or modifications prior to this incident. We manually tripped the circuit breaker to interrupt power and the fire went out on its own. After allowing the panel to cool, we disassembled the panel cover and found that the control circuit board at top right of the door had overheated and melted part of the plastic housing that it was mounted in. The circuit board was blackened and charred but still intact. The label on the plastic housing reads as follows:
Whirlpool P/N 85344963 Rev A
GWDC - 02 DC 4178
3496300070610
FSP
Jabil Circuit
Made in China
In addition there is a barcode that is visible on the circuit board itself and reads as follows:
RH00HW7B
We were fortunate in that we were just about to go upstairs and go to bed, but were still in the kitchen when the incident occurred. Our two young children were already asleep. Needless to say we are very concerned about this incident and will never leave a dishwasher completely unattended going forward. We will be contacting Sears and Whirlpool about this.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Ultra Wash dishwasher model # 665-1701
We had set our dishwasher to run on a delay and gone to bed. My husband was unable to sleep and happened to be up. The dishwasher was running when there was a large flash of white light from the top right side of the front panel of the dishwasher, after which it began to pour black smoke. He was able to stop the dishwasher, and then opened windows to clear the smoke and burnt plastic smell.

I started a load of dishes around 8:15 AM and left for work. My son arrived home around 11:30 AM and smelled a burning plastic type of smell in the house. Upon inspection he noticed smoke was coming out of the dishwasher which was still running. Usually it would have been done. He opened the door and pressed the cancel button on the dishwasher but nothing would happen. Smoke continued out the door and the unit continued to make a sound as if running. The was a soapy mixture swirling in the bottom of the dishwasher. He called me and I came home and shut the unit off at the wall. At that point the sound of the motor stopped. We replaced the dishwasher rather than try to fix it. It smelled very smoky and burnt, especially around the door.

The product, in the report: Font load dishwasher.
We purchased a new home from a builder in May 2011 and opted for the appliance package. The package included Kenmore products to include a dishwasher, glass/smooth top stove and built-in microwave. Whenever we would wash dishes in the dishwasher it seemed like it took forever, but we never really gave it a second thought. On July 8, 2012, upon returning home my daughter washed two loads of dishes. At some point during that time, I walked into an area adjacent to the breakfast bar and found that my carpet was soaked to the point that water squished out and over my foot. This area is on the other side of where the dishwasher is installed under the breakfast bar. At first I thought maybe my dog had soiled the carpet, but I realized that there was too much water in the area for this be the case. I immediately opened the cabinet doors and looked under the sink to see if there was a leak but the area under the sink was dry. I then removed the screws from the kick plate of the dishwasher and there was a pool of water standing in the area under the dishwasher. When my builder installed the hardwoods in the kitchen, he left the area under the dishwasher clear and it actually created an area the width and length of the dishwasher where there is no flooring and you can see the concrete slab foundation under the house. Well, this area was flooded like a small swimming pool. I guess with washing several loads the water had filled the area and the overflow traveled under my breakfast bar and onto the carpet area on the other side. I called the plumber to report the leak thinking that this was a plumbing issue. When the plumber arrived the next morning and looked under the dishwasher, the water was gone. I guess it had soaked into the foundation. He told me after looking at the dishwasher that the dishwasher was the culprit. He was right. When the technician arrived and inspected the dishwasher he stated that the element was bent and that the element had actually burnt a hole in the vinyl tub (as strong and thick as it is). When I explained that in the past the dishwasher ran a long time, he stated that it was because the hole was allowing water to escape and it took longer to fill up. He stated that this was a defect in the dishwasher and that it could quite possible a fire hazard. Upon looking at several websites and the government website it seems that Sears has had problems in the past with their dishwashers and I even spoke to someone who told me to they had a Kenmore dishwasher and the same thing happened to them with the element. Then I met a person in a [REDACTED] who said they would never buy Sears or any product they sell because their dishwasher actually caught on fire and that my incident may have possibly escalated into a situation that cause a fire or electrocution if during the time I stepped into the water I picked up an electrical apparatus. I have contacted both Sears, their claims department and my builder. No one wants to replace the liner or the dishwasher, although with the dishwasher burning out (so to say) only after one year of use and just as the warranty ended, do I really want to buy another Sears product and subject myself to the same thing next year - quite possibly. As the technician stated, although the flooding didn’t occur until 2 months after the 1 year warranty ended, the burning happened over time and there was no way I or my 16 year old daughter could have bent the element, especially since we don’t wash cast iron or other pots and pans in the thing. My safety concern is that this could cause have caused a fire or electrocution - as someone pointed out.

The electronic control panel on my Sears Kenmore (made by whirlpool) dishwasher caught on fire. We had ran our dishwasher in the middle of the night while we were sleeping. The next morning, we had smelled a strong plastic burining smell in our house. At the time, we couldn’t determine where the smell was comming from. But it was obvious and smelled the strongest comming from our kitchen/family room area. Later that day, when we went to use the diswaher again, it would not turn on. We called Sears to schedule a service call. When the service technician arrived a few days later. He immdeiatley took the control panel apart. The technician advised we had a fire inside the comparment that houses the control panel. He showed the compartment to me and the area had black soot stains and had melted palstic. He advised I would need a new control pannel, wiring harness and various misc parts and provided a $700 repair estimate.

Sears Kenmore Dishwasher Model 665.13899K800 Ser. No. FY2612280
On numerous occasions, the heating element used for drying the dishes has turned on spontaneously even though the dishwasher had not been running. The dishwasher would heat up uncontrollably causing the surrounding counter top and cabinets to become very hot. It took my wife about a year to convince me something was wrong because I was convinced she simply wasn’t operating the controls properly. After months of observation, we have discovered that whenever the power to the house is interrupted, then restored, this will happen.
Our city (Plano, TX) has a building code that requires an on/off switch be located on the back splash just above the dishwasher as a safety precaution so that the dishwasher can be turned off quickly at that point instead to having to flip a circuit breaker or unplug the unit. Whenever this switch is accidentally bumped, thus turning the circuit off and on again, the dishwasher’s heating element will activate and burn uncontrolled even though the dishwasher has not been activated at its control panel as one might do when starting a load of dishes.
This is a serious fire hazard. We have been fortunate enough to have been at home when this has happened and to have been able to head off any possible fires. I have been reluctant to spend money to have it repaired since I believe the circuit board would simply be replaced with one of the same flawed design. I have recently filed a report with “kitchenaidfire.com” and have joined their class action lawsuit. I have not yet contacted the BBB or written to Sears executives about this problem.

The product, in the report: plastic tub dishwasher
While using the dishwasher in the normal wash setting for approximately five minutes smoke began to power out of the control panel and it would not power in the off position when it was switched in the off position.
The door to the dishwasher was okay and water began pouring everywhere. The circuit breaker was powered in the off position that caused the unit to power in the off position. There were no damages or injuries reported with the dishwasher.
The firm/retailer was contacted on 11/25/2011 and he was advised by the representatives that he spoke with (name was not provided) that there was no a recall involving his model number.
He is considering getting the unit replaced and has not used it since the failure occurred and the circuit breaker is currently still powered in the off position.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel dishwasher
While operating the dishwasher on the normal wash and air dry after pressing the start button within five minutes there was an explosiive sound and black smoke and flames were shooting from the vent.
While attempting to power the dishwasher in the off position he noticed that it would not power off. He opened the door to the dishwasher and made several more attempts with the control panel. When that failed the circuit breaker was pulled to cease all power to the unit.
There is black soot on the outside dishwasher door and a burnt plastic odor, but no other damages reported. The firm was contacted on 10/30/2011 and she was advised that her model number was not affected by a recall.
There was no final decision made on repairing the unit and the firm was not contacted since 10/30/2011 and the circuit breaker was pulled so there is no power to the unit and it has not been used. Consumer posted incident in a Sears Forum and was contacted by Sears, who arranged for a service call and repair service was completed on 11/11/11

The product, in the report: Under the counter dishwasher
The dishwaser was powered in the on position on the normal wash (45 minute setting) at 10:30 pm and at 7:30 am when he woke up he noticed that top right corner of the control panel had black soot on it.
When he opened the door to the dishwasher he did not see any damages to the inside of the dishwasher. The cycle had completed and the dishwasher was not powered on when the incident occurred. It appears the control panel overheated from the inside.
He will not contact the firm and it is not economically repairable. No further information was provided
