First aid Made Aug 22, 2026, sent to the company Aug 25, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 10, 2026
The product, in the report: Dishwasher
I sustained a cut and scrape (2 1/2 inches long) from the sharp edge of the top corner of the door on a new GE dishwasher. I contacted GE. They sent a repair vendor to assess the dishwasher. They sent a replacement door, that is no different. The replacement door has the same sharp edges.
(09/03/2026) I would like to provide an update on my report.
I sustained a second injury from my new GE dishwasher door on August 24, 2026.
After I sustained the second injury, I went to the Best Buy store where I purchased the dishwasher to see if there was another model that doesn’t have sharp edges. All of the GE dishwasher floor models at Best Buy had the same sharp edges on the dishwasher door, not just the model number I reported.
This is a multi-product issue that is not limited to the model and unit I purchased.
I have attached a photo of the second cut on my leg and a photo of how the dishwasher door was open when I was cut. I had applied a clear silicone baby protector bumper to the outside edge of the door, which cut me the first time when opening the door.
This time the door was open and not moving while I was loading the dishwasher. My leg was cut after it brushed against the right inside corner of the door. I was never injured while using my original GE Café Dishwasher, which I owned for sixteen years. The current product line is dangerous.

The product, in the report: Under the counter dishwasher
The internal dishwasher components are plastic and prone to melting. The lower water spray arm is so close to the dishwasher’s heating element that it caused the ends of that part to melt, and smoke emitted from the appliance.
(12/2025): After three or four wash cycles, the consumer noticed a burning odor in the home. When he opened the dishwasher’s door, he saw that the spray arm had melted.
He called the dealer and their rep. stayed on the phone and transferred him to the manufacturer.
A manufacturer’s authorized technician from Bodewell, was scheduled to come out to his home 1/21/2026. After examining the machine, the technician told the consumer that he needed to replace 3 parts in the machine. The technician ordered the parts to be sent directly to the consumer. The technician came back on 1/27/2026 and installed the new parts.
2/3/2026: The consumer used the dishwasher and after running it for 2 – 3 cycles, the replacement plastic spray arm melted again.
The consumer was given a CASE# [REDACTED], by the Manufacturer’s Case Manager for Consumer Relations. He was told that they would consult their Quality Engineering Department and get back to him, but no one contacted him.
He followed up with the manufacturer again and inquired about the status of his prior report, but they could not provide a status. Their rep. offered to send out another technician, but the consumer declined and said he would wait until he spoke with their Quality Assurance Department.
The consumer said this could have led to a fire in his home.
The dishwasher was delivered to the consumer’s home on Delivered 12/8/2025.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher, 24 in. Top Control Built-In Tall Tub Dishwasher in Fingerprint Resistant Stainless with Dry Boost, 3rd Rack, and 47dBA
GE dishwasher has a rack with cheap rollers on it. The roller broke off during the dishwashing cycle and melted to the heating element releasing toxic melted plastic fumes within the unit. The fumes filled the apartment and made my tenant sick. GE came out to replace it, took 6 months to replace the wheels through third party vendor. Broke again 3 months later on a different roller in the same manner and melted plastic with toxic fumes all through the apartment. Both times the tenant was home and likely prevented a fire by shutting off the unit.

The product, in the report: General Electric dishwasher model GDP645SYNFS stainless steel front
GE dishwasher (model GDP645SYNFS) caught fire while running. Smelled smoke, opened it to belching flames. Put out the fire with water from the sink. Our house is filled w plastic smoke, and there is a hole melted into the dish rack. Everyone is fine but it was extremely dangerous. We believe that the dishwasher may have finished running prior to us opening it and that the inside was smoldering, as the white light indicating the run completed was lit. Contacted GE via web form and will call in the morning but we are extremely concerned about this happening to others. Our tentative guess is either a knife slipped through the basket and shorted in the heating element or the heating element failed in a way that caused the fire that flared when the door was opened.

After several attempts to get an email address, so that I have a record of my report, from GE and getting no to that request, I am writing to you. There is a piece of the dishwasher tray that keeps coming apart, even after having it repaired. Initially, it caused a a fire during the drying cycle. I have copies of my correspondence as well as pictures, but I cannot send them, as I am unable to upload them to your form.

A spray wand on a GE Dishwasher purchased in 2022 made principally of plastic came into contact with the heating element of the dishwasher and burned creating a real fire hazard. The product, in the report: under the counter dishwasher
12/26/2022: The dishwasher was in operation, when the consumer noticed a disturbing odor. It resembled a chemical-like smell and there was white smoke emitting from it. She is not sure how long the dishwasher had been in use at that time. She opened the door and much more white smoke, and an increased chemical odor emitted from it. Opening the door stopped the operation and she tripped the breaker for extra precaution.
The dishwasher has a stainless-steel interior. The inner tub did not show any damage. However, after the incident, the top edge appeared to be stained. She used a white paper towel to wipe it and some of the black soot rubbed off that area.
12/26/2022: She called the firm, but they were closed for the holiday. She will call them again.
2/10/23 To: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission This is an update to: Report Number: 20221228-CA2EE-4033404
When I reported this incident to General Electric, on 12/27/22, their Consumer Relationships Department Representative, [REDACTED], said a General Electric certified repair technician has to come out and look at the dishwasher (model # PDW8200NBB).
I agreed to this as I was curious as to what had caused this scarry incident.
The General Electric technician came to examine the dishware on 1-9-23. He unscrewed the inner panel of the dishwasher door lifted it. On the inner door, on the upper right side of the control panel; burnt, melted wires were visible.
The General Electric technician commented that the wiring darkness was burnt as the control panel shorted out.
Thank You.

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher Model PDW 9700J11
Fire close call caused by GE dishwasher model PDW9700J11, serial number LH8112948. The dishwasher was in an “off” condition, not being run. No one was using the machine. Problem discovered when an attempt to turn on and machine would not come on. Attempt to turn on was to wash a full load of dishes. There were no injuries from this close call, however the interior of machine electrical systems were discovered burned by GE repair on Sept 2, 2021 when diagnostic visit was completed. House fire was averted because surge protector shut off power but was severely damaged as result of dishwasher electrical failure. The GE recall repair in 2011 only put a [REDACTED] on the problem, did not fix the cause of the fires. Wednesday’s repair was another [REDACTED]. A fix would require a door redesign to prevent condensation from entering the electrical controls of the machine. There is currently a big hole in the door stainless interior panel where the door latch is located that encourages condensation to enter the door electrical connections. I would bet there are house fires around the United States where my dishwasher model was the cause of the house fire but evidence would have been destroyed in the fire. Fires would have been attributed to a house electrical connection problem and not having been generated by the dishwasher failure. This is true if the machine had been directly plugged into an electrical socket. My house close call fire was saved because a surge protecter between the machine and electrical socket protected my house from the electrical fault of the machine. Burn evidence is located on the electrical components of the machine including machine wiring. This is also shown by the evidence of the severely burned surge protector. This is my professional opinion as a retired [REDACTED]. GE tells me they have no responsibility because the machine was previously repaired Nov. 19 2010 under a recall.

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher. Stainless steel finish. Standard under counter mount dimensions. Model PDW9980N00SS
We have had and been satisfied with the GE Profile dishwasher that was installed in our new home in December 2007. On April 28, 2021 prior to retiring for the evening, we set the dishes to wash overnight as we have done so many times. We awoke to the smell of smoke but thought it was coming through an open window in our bedroom. When we got up at 6:15am, it was clear the dishwasher had malfunctioned. The counter top was extremely hot, a plastic lid on the counter top had melted. Opening the dishwasher was horrifying. Everything inside was melted - the silverware basket, the rotating wash wand...what a mess! All the dishes had melted plastic and a smokey coating on them. With a lot of effort, most of the dishes could be salvaged - not so with the sterling silver flatware. We took pictures we’d be happy to share. We just wanted to report the danger to others who may have the same make/model dishwasher. We were never contacted by the manufacturer alerting us to any fire hazard associated with this product.

Hurt, care not known Made Apr 19, 2021, sent to the company Apr 29, 2021, published by CPSC May 13, 2021
The product, in the report: Dishwasher
The consumer indicates that he turned his dishwasher on and approximately twenty minutes later smelled smoke in his home. When the consumer checked the dishwasher, he noticed that it was the source of the smoke so he looked down a small slot located on the door latch and saw flames. The consumer immediately got a fire extinguisher and was able to fit it through the slot, extinguishing the fire completely. The consumer then switched off the circuit breaker.
The consumer notes that he burned his right index finger when he touched the On/ Off switch; all of the plastic around the switch melted but the unit inside as well as his dishes were not damaged since the fire was limited to the inside of the door.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation [REDACTED]; the representative he spoke to asked him to call back to schedule an inspection as their system was down but let him know that they would either repair the unit or give him a discount towards the purchase of a new one should his unit not be repairable.
The consumer states that the unit was used once daily; the consumer notes that all the homes in his neighborhood have the same dishwasher but he is unsure if his incident as isolated.
The consumer does not plan on keeping his dishwasher for at least the next thirty days.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher
The consumer indicates that she smelled something burning in her home. When she checked and opened her dishwasher, a lot of smoke came out even though the unit was not on. The dishes that were inside it were burnt. The consumer immediately contacted her local Fire Department and they extinguished the fire, unplugged and removed the dishwasher, and placed it in the consumer’s porch. Their report indicated that the fire may have been started by the unit’s heating element.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative she spoke to scheduled for a Service Technician to inspect the unit. Once the serviceman looked at the unit, he deemed it repairable but then the Manufacturer deemed it irreparable once they read the Fire Department’s report. The Manufacturer offered a discount towards one of two models of dishwasher that the consumer can purchase.
The consumer notes that she had a third-party repairman inspect her unit and he also deemed it irreparable as the parts were no good.
The consumer states that the unit is used three to four times per week.
The consumer plans on keeping her dishwasher for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: General Electric dishwasher. It’s aluminum on the front and has black plastic on the top of the door. It has a patch to lock it for running a cycle. It has Finish logos on the inside as well
I got my finger caught under the top lip of my dishwasher door. There is a gap in the plastic with sharp edges. The first time it happened my finger got caught and bent the knuckle in the wrong direction resulting in a break and a deep cut that had to be cleaned and sealed at the doctors. I have a permanent scar and still have finger pain nearly 6 months later. I have caught other fingers twice since resulting only in a nail pulling slightly off the bed and a cut with a bruise

The product, in the report: GE Profile dishwasher. Stainless exterior. Under counter.
While under normal use, the GE Profile dishwasher in our home caught on fire. The fire came from the circuit board inside the door of the unit. Thankfully we smelled the burning smell, and were able to unplug the unit, and put out the fire. There was black residue on the counters and all the dishes. The underside of the counter in that area is black from the smoke or the heat. The wires are melted, the handle is disconnected from the interior melting, the top button panel was melted as well.

We had a house built in 2010, and all of the appliances came with it. All of them were GE. In 2017 the GE dishwasher model GLD4560R00SS, and ser. number VT788951B started arching. Standing in front of the washer, I could see the arc come from underneath the washer. I unplugged the washer, and I have not used it since. There are only two of us, and the washer was only used about 8 times a year when family visited.

The product, in the report: GE Hotpoint Dishwasher (Model # GLD6964R10SS / Serial # RS836468B). Stainless Steel door, plastic tub built-in dishwasher.
Circuit board on GE Dishwasher (Model # GLD6964R10SS/ Serial # RS836468B) caught on fire during operation. The incident occurred in the middle of the night and mid-cycle for the dishwasher. Smoke from the burning plastic was billowing out of the machine and fortunately we were home and were able to react to the fire detectors. The machine was continuing to run and had approximately 40 minutes left on the cycle. The machine could not be stopped or reset without cutting the power to it from the circuit breaker box.
Upon investigation, nothing foreign caused the short. Plastic around the circuit board housing was melting and causing the smoke. The board itself is mostly black due to what appears to be a short. The metal heat shield was also blackened as a result. Damage to the premises was burnt plastic smell throughout. Damages to residents includes smoke inhalation of toxic burnt plastic smoke and stress caused by the incident and potential impact to young children ages 6 and 3. Windows and doors had to be left open overnight in frigid temperatures to allow for fresh air to clear the smoke.
This appears to be the same issue (water condensation causing a short) that is the subject of the recall https://www.geappliances.com/ge/recall/dishwasher_2010/. This model number, however, has not been recalled. GE sent a technician to investigate and his report was only that a “”thermal event @ control module” occurred. GE has made no effort to remedy this problem based on my subsequent discussions with their customer relations team other than to offer a limited discount on a GE dishwasher.

The product, in the report: ge profile stainless steel dishwasher. I have pictures of the melted items, but can not get them to upload.
I came home with my toddler after a playdate. Was making him a sandwich and placed my hand on the dishwasher panel. It was so hot it burned my hand. I knew something was wrong as the dishwasher had not been run since yesterday afternoon. I grabbed a potholder to open it up. the heat kept coming out of it. I tried to turn it off by the buttons on the front, but to no avail. Went downstairs to turn the breaker off. After it had cooled down, we emptied it. Upon emptying, we realized how hot it actually got as it melted most of our plastic toddler items. I want others warned about this dishwasher, because it looks like it was not part of the initial recall of ge profile dishwashers. I also sent a copy of the pictures to ge so they can know

Set the dishwasher for delayed start of 4 hours. At approximately 1:30 AM the next morning my smoke alarms were activated (all 8 alarms) and I ran to the kitchen which was full of smoke and saw flames rising from the door of the dishwasher. I was able to open the door and poured water to extinguish the fire and called 911 to send the fire department. The firemen removed the dishwasher from the house and vented the smoke for two hours. Some damage to the cabinet on the left side of the dishwasher; the dishwasher was totally destroyed. I have since ordered a new GE Dishwasher from [REDACTED] being delivered today. We have a GE dishwasher. The dishwasher came with the new house when it was built in late 2010. We only use it about 8 or 10 times a year. Starting about 6 months ago we started smelling something like hot wires and a few months ago the machine started arching out of underneath the door. The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
On 27 February, 2018 at approximately 3AM, I woke to the smell of melting plastic. I identified the smell as originating from my GE Profile Dishwasher as I noticed the counter top above the washer was hot to the touch. Upon opening the door, smoke rolled out and set off my smoke alarms.
The washer could not be turned off by the controls. I had to locate and shut off circuit in my breaker panel.
Anything plastic inside the dishwasher was destroyed including most of the plastic components of the washer itself.
To be clear, the dishwasher turned on its heating element by itself without any human intervention. I did load some dishes the previous night but did not add detergent nor start the wash cycle.
This model/serial number is not part of any recall but I think that it should be.

Madam/Sir:
I have a GE Monogram dishwasher Model Number ZBD6890N00II, Serial Number ZM728011B. Two nights ago I unloaded the dishwasher and went to bed. At about 3:45 am I awoke to a strange smell in my condominium. After searching, I found that the dishwasher was on a heat cycle that melted the upper and lower plastic spray mechanisms in the stainless steel case of the dishwasher as well as the plastic silverware holder. I am appalled that this can happen even accidentally. I have been using dishwashers for a long time and have never experienced anything like this overheating. I think it would have caused a fire if I had not caught it when I did.
Have these dishwashers been reported before as fire hazards. I can see no recall activity on my serial or model number. I think the dishwasher was manufactured probably just prior to 2008.

At 2:30 a.m. on 12/21, my husband noticed a HORRIBLE smell in the entire 1st floor of our house. It was coming from the dishwasher, which he had started at 11am. It was stuck running and was burning up! The door was so hot, we couldn’t touch it. He immediately turned out the electrical breaker. It was clear that if he hadn’t happened to get up to use the bathroom, a fire would have started, which was terrifying! This was a GE Monogram dishwasher that cost almost $1000 new! We were scared and shocked. Luckily, my husband checked Google and found that there was a recall issued for this dishwasher in 2010! I usually register all new appliances, but in this case, we were moving into a new house we had built, and everything was new. I was overwhelmed and didn’t register. STILL, the appliance dealer in Richmond, VA, knew we had purchased this expensive dishwasher, so we were disappointed that they didn’t notify us. I strongly feel that my husband saved our lives. We had our adult son home for Christmas and our two dogs in the house. We were ALL at risk! We are using the $200 rebate for a new dishwasher to be installed this week, but this was a serious event. On 12/23, our house STILL smells of that horrible burning plastic/metal even though we’ve had windows open.

This is regarding a GE Dishwasher Model GDWF160V40SS purchased from Home Depot in 2012. On the early evening of November 7, 2017 (6:00pm EST) I ran the dishwasher. In the early morning I went to work, not checking the dishwasher. However, on my return at 4:00 pm 11/8/2017 I went to unload the dishwasher which was extremely hot and shelled of something melting. I discovered that the heater was still on, had melted the silverware basket and warped melted some plastic cutting boards and storage containers, and would likely have caught fire if I had been away from home for a few days as the melting basket was dripping right on the heating element. The only way for me to turn it off was to switch the circuit breaker supplying power to the dishwasher to off.

Product is a household dishwasher used once daily. After a smoky odor was noticed, I was initially unable to determine it’s cause, and the appliance appeared to be working. This also caused some of the case plastic to melt. I was not aware of the fire when it occurred, and it was self-extinguishing. The electrical failure did not cause the 15 amp circuit breaker to trip. Further examination of the PC board found that no fuses exist despite the presence of AC line voltage. I have kept the PC board in case further investigation is requested. There were no injuries. Damage was limited to the dishwasher itself. Product is a General Electric dishwasher, Model GSD5560G03SS, Serial #AH864064B.

The product, in the report: Steel tub dishwasher
We loaded our dishwasher with a typical load of dishes just before going to bed for the evening. We used a normal wash cycle with a heated dry. We went to bed. Just before going to sleep, I smelled smoke in the house. I ran downstairs to the kitchen and opened the running dishwasher. An acrid black smoke what smelled like burning circuit-board was belching out of the washer door latch. The inside of the door was quite hot to the touch. The door continued to remain hot until I shut down the circuit breaker for the washer at our main box. Besides some inhaling of the tarry smoke, no injuries were sustained (THOUGH I WOULD HATE TO THINK IF THIS HAD HAPPENED AFTER WE WERE ASLEEP). The house continues to smell like burned phenolic resin 5 days after the event.
We read about the 2010 recall on our model washer the next day. We called the GE hotline to report the incident. They indicated that, based on our machines history, the recall “fix” had already been performed for the previous home owner.
The GE service tech was out to the house 5 days later. He went inside the washer door and discovered that a wire harness attaching to the main controller board was quite burned, as well as the controller board itself, a Computime 663C, GE model no 165D7305G003. Surrounding plastic was also melted. The tech offered to replace/repair the burned parts for free. He could not guarantee that the controller board would not flame up again. We turned down the repair and will replace the washer.

I have a GE Profile Dishwasher - Model # PDW9980LOSS Serial # HL887660B. This morning my wife ran the dishwasher and left the house - i was outside working in yard - around 9:30 the smoke alarm went off and I went inside the house filled with smoke and smoke coming out of the dishwasher with a flame coming from the top control panel of the dishwasher. I opened door and turned off power to dishwasher which was running. The Houston Fire Department showed up and pulled the wood above the dishwasher off that had been charred and made sure everything was out utilizing their heat gun. Around noon I contacted GE via their online system - but have yet to hear back from them.

We turned our GE Profile dishwasher on to wash dishes. About halfway through the cycle, smoke started coming out of the top of the dishwasher, along with a very bad burning plastic/electric smell. We immediately stopped the dishwasher cycle by opening the door and the smoke continued coming out and smelled very bad. We called an appliance repairman who told us to immediately turn the breaker off for the dishwasher, because the top panel electric display was still on and showing lights indicating time elapsed in the wash cycle. We did this and let the smoke dissipate, and determined it had been coming out of the top control panel. We are going to replace the dishwasher with GE rebate due to recall.

The product, in the report: GE dishwasher model GLD6908R10BB S.N. DT722781B used to wash dishes
Our GE dishwasher model GLD6908R19BB caught on fire. My wife was in the kitchen at the time and saw black smoke coming from the dishwasher. She opens the door and saw flames inside. She immediately closed the door and tried to use the dishwasher controls to shut down the machine, but it did not work. She shut off the electrical power supply to the dishwasher on an external switch. We called GE. They sent a technician to inspect the unit. The electronic components of the control unit and the insulation of the electrical wires were melted. GE informed us, that the dishwasher cannot be repaired. It is a total loss. They told us, that their engineers did not consider this a safety issue. This potentially deadly situation was only prevented through my wife’s luckily being in the kitchen at that time and reacting quickly and correctly in the emergency. GE’s responses were to offer us to buy a new dishwasher at an inflated price, and if we don’t take it, the case is closed by them.

This report is on a GE Profile dishwasher model PDW9980N20SS serial number DR801172B purchased from Home Depot maybe in 2010. After a load had been done using the delay start in our dishwasher Monday night 2/8/16, I noticed the next morning some plastic ware had melted in one corner. I thought I might have put too light a plastic in. About 6 :30 PM that same Tuesday February 9, I set the delay again on the dishwasher to start 7 hours later around 3 AM in the next morning. About11:30 that night my wife and I were awakened by a melted plastic smell. We found the dishwasher still set on delayed start with about 3 hours to go. But it was hot and stunk of melted plastic. Even the granite counter top was hot. We opened the dishwasher and found melted plastic all over - on racks, on glassware, on silverware and metal items. The detergent dispenser was still closed. The lower spray nozzle had melted one of it’s arms onto the heating element. Photos are later in report. It still remained hot when we shut it off by pushing the “start” button. So we had to turn it off at the circuit breaker outside. The melted spray arm was very heavy plastic part of the dishwasher. Other melted plastic ware in the load was also very heavy material that had never melted before using this dishwasher.

The dishwasher was running for a little over an hour. When it started the drying cycle, black smoke came out of the top, front vent of the dishwasher. Thankfully, my husband and I were both in the kitchen at the time, and were able to turn it off immediately. Because we were in the kitchen, the only damage was to the dishwasher itself. If we hadn’t been right there, there could have been a fire. My husband unplugged the dishwasher to make sure it was safe and there was no further danger. It was obvious that the smoke came from within the door itself. He unscrewed the front panel from the door, and observed that the wiring had started to melt. Also of note, there was a recall on the heating element for this product a few years ago. We DID have the dishwasher fixed according to the recall by an authorized professional.

I ran my GE dishwasher on the evening of 10/5 around 7-8pm. This morning on 10/6 my husband indicated the dishwasher was still hot and he asked when i ran it. I told him last night between 7-8 pm and it was now 6:45 am and the dishwasher was so hot he couldn’t touch any of the items. The dishwasher was extremely hot and smelled like something was burning. We had to turn off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher as we were afraid of fire. I checked General Electric’s recall list and this machine is not listed on it, however it is presenting as the same issue:

The product, in the report: GE Black Profile Dishwasher, under the counter
The consumer stated that the unit was installed in the home that she moved into in 2008.
The consumer stated that she noticed an issue in the dishwasher sometimes 2008-2012. The consumer saw about 4 inch of burn scar across the lower part of the door that melted the door. The consumer contacted GE regarding this. At that time, they informed her that there were no recalls on the unit and so she would have to pay for the repair (around $200 + parts). The consumer left the issue at that time as she does not use the dishwasher.
The consumer came across the damage and took up the issue again about 2 months ago.
The consumer contacted the manf who informed her that her unit is included in recall #07-190 (spoke to [REDACTED]). They sent the wires to the consumer for the repair under recall. The consumer had a technician, [REDACTED], come over for inspection and recall repair about 1 week ago. The technician came over and examined the damages. The technician informed the consumer that the previous damage to the dishwasher is not what the recall is about. The technician informed the consumer that the damage in the unit was caused by some “thermal event.”
The technician consulted higher up. The consumer was informed that she would have to pay minimum of $159 for repair + parts. The technician informed the consumer that he would not fix the unit under recall until the other damages were addressed. The technician stated that there was no point in fixing the wiring in the unit (under recall) if the water will continue to get into the electrical panel. The supervisor informed [REDACTED]to not disable the unit as it’s the customer’s property.
The consumer spoke to [REDACTED] in Consumer Relations (GE). She informed the consumer that there was product malfunction due computer control panel. She informed that her damage was caused by the heating element burning through the door and that it had nothing to do with the recall. She informed her that her only options are to pay for the repair on the door or get a rebate on a new purchase.
The consumer spoke to [REDACTED], supervisor to [REDACTED]. He informed her same thing as [REDACTED]. The consumer does not feel that she should have to pay for any damages since it was caused by a manufacturer defect.
The consumer was contacted by [REDACTED] on 05/26/14. She informed her that she can have the unit fixed at no charge under recall, if she pays to repair the other damage. The consumer was also provided an alternate remedy of rebate towards a new GE dishwasher unit. [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]both informed the consumer that the dishwasher is not to be used due to the recall and the melting in the door.
The consumer is enclosing photos of the dishwasher of concern in this complaint.

The product, in the report: GE Profile stainless steel dishwasher.
My GE Profile dishwasher heating element overheated and melted bottom of the plastic tab. I called GE and their customer relations sent GE technician to check for safety hazard after I escalated to Consumer Relations when they told me that my serial number didn’t fit latest recall of 1.5 million GE dishwashers. Technician came in and checked the dishwasher. He confirmed that the safety hazard exists as heating element overheats to the point of melting/burning plastic and asked us not to use it and since it was not repairable called in and relayed it to his engineer. Next morning I received and email from the GE Consumer Relations that NO Safety Hazard was found and since dishwasher is outside of warranty I need to replace it at my own expense. 1.5 Million GE dishwashers were recalled in 2012 because of similar safety issue. My dishwasher’s serial number wasn’t one of them and GE is failing to recognize that this is a more widespread issue. I am still talking to GE and trying to escalate this. Please help!

UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: As stated in the report I submitted the house filled with smoke as result of the Dishwasher malfunction. This was a strong smell of burnt wiring. The close proximity to wood cabinets leads me to believe if the dishwasher has not been attended to the cabinets may have ignited. In addition my wife has asthma and caused her to have an attack. She also could not stay in the house that night.

The product, in the report: under the counter dishwasher
Over the last year or two, the consumer noticed that the inside of the dishwasher was extremely hot, for a long length of time, after it was used. This problem increased to the point that it began to oxidize the metal pans that were placed in it. The dishwasher did not melt any of the plastic items in it or char any of them. However, she can take a towel and wipe 1 of the metal pans after a wash cycle and she can see a layer of dark oxidation on the towel. The consumer and her husband “only” use the dishwasher when they are home.
(4/1/2013) The dishwasher ran for a cycle and finished that night. The consumer noticed that the dishes were blazing hot for an extended timeframe after the wash cycle. The dishes cooled down by leaving the door openand the consumer was able to remove them and reload it
(4/2/2013) The consumer loaded the breakfast dishes in the dishwasher that morning and set it for 8 hours, to start shortly before they come in from work. Approximately 30 minutes later, the consumer noticed that her counter was hot to the touch. The consumer opened the dishwasher and looked inside. No washing had started, the inside of the dishwasher was extremely hot as if the heating element had been “on” by itself. The consumer turned the timer off and attempted to turn the dishwasher off by the use of the control panel, but it would not work. The consumer tried to unselect the heating dry element, but that would not work. The consumer ended up unplugging the dishwasher from the outlet.
The consumer went to the mfr’s website and she called the firm, but their system indicated that her unit was not under recall and disconnected the call.
The consumer said that her problem is similar to CAP# 12-244. She went on to say that every so often the recall is expanded and she believes that there is a problem with this particular line of dishwashers by the mfr.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Triton XL Dishwasher Stainless steel front Plastic Tub
On the morning of Jan 20, 2013 we woke up and found the dishwasher was incredibly - dangerously - hot! I thought that opening the door would stop the heat, but it didn’t work. By the time we realized the heater was still on, all of the plastic dishes in the unit were melted and ruined. My wife discovered that turning the unit off, turning it on and then turning off the “Heated Dry” control disabled the heating element and thereby stopped the overheating.
I started shopping for a new dishwasher and stumbled across CPSC recall notice #12-244 dated Aug. 9, 2012 on the Consumer Reports website. At first, I thought that my unit was covered under this recall, but it is not. The model number is on the list, but the serial number is not.
It may to be that the malfunction we experienced is different than the above referenced recall. Our malfunction appears to be due to a controller malfunction, and not “an electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element” as described in CPSC Release #12-244. In our case, the dishwasher works without overheating if the “Heated Dry” option is turned off at the control panel.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Smart Dispense dishwasher
On 9/17/2012 I woke up at approximate 2 a.m. to drink water. To my surprise I smelt something that i associated with burning materials. I went downstairs and as I descended the stairwell i WAS ABLE TO VISUALIZE an unusual array of light coming in from through the front door streaming through a cloud of smoke. The scent of burning material increased . I entered the kitchen and saw that the control panel was still illuminated as during an operational cycle. Upon depressing the control panel i attempted to depress the OFF button and to my surprise the whole door was extremely hot . The dishwasher would not turn off , thus to my fast response I proceeded to the basement and directed myself to the breaker box and turned off the dishwasher breaker.
Later upon opening the dishwasher I was able to identify that this was the source of the smoke and it was catching fire in lieu to visibly damage to the items placed to was and components of the dishwasher had melted an were burnt.
Attached are several photographs for your review and consideration.

The product, in the report: G E dishwasher
I started my dishwasher. It proceeded to wash the dishes. After the wash cycle, and it went into the heated cycle, I began to smell something burning. I opened the dishwasher and everything that could melt had either melted into something unrecognizable or melted to the point of being unusable. We have used the dishwasher, but we are very aware of paying attention to what it is doing.

Over the weekend, my GE dishwasher heating unit remained on over 24 hours after a wash cycle was completed. The dishwashers model number GLD6200L15WW serial number RL748615B was not included in the most recent recall on August 9, 2012 for a similar issue. My 21 month daughter touched the outside of the dishwasher door and said ‘OUCH! HOT!’ My husband and I both touched the dishwasher thinking that she was confusing hot and cold but found out that it was extremely HOT and checked my daughters hand. Her hand did not sustain any burns but when we opened up the dishwasher the dishes was so hot that it had to be handled by a pot holder to avoid getting burned. The outside wooden frame of the dishwasher was also hot. We immediately turned off the circuit breaker to the dishwasher and also our disposer as they are connected. We have not been able to use the dishwasher or the disposer since then. I have called GE and they have stated that this model was not covered under the recall but I have to pay for a diagnosis with GE technician to determine if this is in fact a recall issue. This is a huge safety issue and should be looked at.

Dishwasher overheated to the point it melted contents and components of dishwasher - lower spray arm, silverware basket, coarse filter, parts of lower rack. Even when the cycle was completed, the heating coil continued to operate as though the cycle had never completed. The only way to turn it off was to turn off the power at the source. We discovered the problem before additional damage had occurred.

The product, in the report: GE Dishwasher, Stainless steel tub Model: PDW8280N00SS
We started our dishwasher this morning, like we would any other time. I decided to work from home today and thankfully I did. As I passed near the kitchen, I noticed an odd smell, which burned my eyes. I noticed the odor was coming from our dishwasher. I went to open the dishwasher and immediately noticed that the area near the dishwasher was extremely warm and the door itself was hot to the touch. Once open, the fumes of burning plastic screamed out of the dishwasher along with a wall of heat. I ran to shut the break off at the panel and turned the wall switch off as well.
All my plastic cups had melted as well as some parts on the dishwasher. This is extremely upsetting as a neighbor in our development had recently offered the residents a GE Dishwasher recall website for Dishwasher heating element failures which resulted in some fires.
http://www.geappliances.com/products/recall/dishwasher_2012/
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml12/12244.html
I referenced this site and my dishwasher was not impacted so I assumed I was clear.
GE has some obvious issues with their dishwashers that almost cost me my home. Had I not been here, this would have eventually turned into a fire, evident by the amount of damage to my dishwasher safe cups and the unit itself.
Model: PDW8280200SS SN: AR860951B
Thank God I was home as we may have lost it all.
GE NEEDS TO FIX THIS ASAP.
Please issue a warning to ALL GE DISHWASHER owners.
This is bigger than they think.

My Ge Cafe Dishwasher- was in heat dry mode for about 7 hours without turning off- It melted the plastic components of the dishwasher and also everything that was plastic inside the dishwasher- We used a laser thermometer after the door was open for about 5 minutes, the temperature inside was over 400 degrees. Luckily we smelled plastic burning prior to leaving our house for Thanksgiving dinner. I would have caused a major fire. The heat unit will not turn off at all - every time we close the door the heating unit comes on with the dishwasher turned off. We purchased the dishwasher in 2008 Ge advised this is not a warranty or recall on our particular dishwasher. We have no way of unplugging the unit, Ge installed it and it is hardwired into the electrical box.

The product, in the report: GE Profile Dishwasher
Dishwasher completed its cycle with the heated dry option on. I opened the dishwasher to help the dishes complete drying. They were warm and some were a little damp. About 30 minutes later, I closed the door to keep our toddler out of the dishes. I then went to bed. This was around 12 AM. At 4 AM we were awakened by an awful smell and smoke in the house. I was about to call the fire department because I could not locate the cause when I noticed that the kitchen counter above the dishwasher was very hot to the touch. I opened the dishwasher to find a mess of melted plastic. It appears that the heating element came again some time during the night. The inside of the DW was as hot as an oven.
After a brief search on the web, we discovered multiple reports of similar problems with GE DW. There is a recall for a model similar to ours, but not our model. This is outrageous. They should be forced to recall all of their DW with this feature.

The product, in the report: General Electric Profile Dishwasher
Consumer stated that his dishwasher was smoking in the early hours of the morning while his family was asleep. The consumer stated that his wife was using the dishwasher in the afternoon the day and noticed that the washer was unusually hot after it ran it’s normal cycle of 45 minutes. She left the door of the dishwasher open ajar so that the machine would be off and left the kitchen. The consumer stated that his family woke to find smoke had filled the kitchen. The consumer thinks the product apparently started a cycle on its own.
The consumer’s wife and her son and two daughters were not injured or harmed by the product but had to go shut off the circuit breaker to ensure the product was off. The dishwasher has melted plastic throughout the inside. Luckily, the damage did not spread to the structure of the consumer’s home. The consumer’s wife opted not to call the fire department. The consumer has yet to call the manufacturer and since the product was originally in the home when he bought it he doesn’t know the retailer.
The consumer stated that the product has never been serviced. While doing some research, the consumer found that similar models like his were recalled in release 11-022 also for a fire hazard.
