The product, in the report: Dishwasher
July 6th between 4:00pm and 5:00pm this caller had just finished a load of dishes in the dishwasher then after a cooling period she opened the door but when she reached for the dishes to begin putting them away there was a noise then a spark from the bottom of the dishwasher which was enough to cause her to jump back but then when it stopped she put the dishes away with no further incident. July 7th around 8:00pm this caller’s husband was loading the dishwasher to begin a cycle, the door was open, dishwasher was off but he experienced the same incident with a loud noise and sparks coming from the bottom inside portion of the dishwasher. The callers have left the circuit breaker off this time and are not using the unit at all.
There are no injuries to report
This caller searched the CPSC web site, found release# 12-244 where her model number is listed but not her serial number. She purchased her five year old home May 16th, 2014 and the dishwasher was in the home when she purchased it.
She has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.
update 08/6/14 from consent form: I did contact the GE company and as of Tuesday July 22. the issue with the dishwasher has been rectified. I have an appliance that is no longer sparking. GE paid for the part & labor.

The product, in the report: GE Quiet Power 3 Dishwasher , built in, white
I came home from work Monday, July 30, 2012, for lunch at noon. When I entered the house I smelled an awful toxic odor. It smelled “hot”. I discovered the source of the odor. My GE dishwasher was very, very hot. All the plastic tupperware was melted on the bottom of the dishwasher. The thick polyurethane cutting board was melted half way through and scorched. I called Kollman Appliance in Sioux City, Iowa, (the place I purchased the dishwasher from) and they told me to cut the power to the dishwasher. I threw the breaker and waited. Eventually I was able to tell the dishwasher was cooling down. A repairman came the next day and told me it was a faulty control panel. I told him the dishwasher was not even running when I left that morning- I had not started it because it was not full yet. He told me they can start on their own, he said the control panel turned on the heating element! I can’t believe how lucky we were that I came home at noon. I am certain we were very close to having a fire. That awful toxic melted plastic smell hung on until today (Wednesday, [REDACTED]). It may be of interest to you to know we replaced our old GE Dishwasher with this one because our old one was recalled due to it being a FIRE HAZARD!!!
