The product, in the report: This is a dishwasher. It is a GE caf dishwasher. Model CDT845P3N2D1. We have had it for about five years now and have replaced at least 20 wheels since then. However, it is set up the wheels. Keep on melting, causing the need for replacement. Otherwise it makes it unsafe to roll the bottom rack.
The wheels on the bottom rack of my dishwasher keep melting making it unsafe to use.

The product, in the report: Standard home dishwasher “Cafe CDT845P4NW2 24” Customizable Professional Collection Built-In Dishwasher”
GE Cafe Dishwasher heating element failed in a way which electrified the chassis of the dishwasher, causing immediate ground fault. If GFCI breaker had not been present or had malfunctioned, we could have been electrocuted when the dishwasher began running a cycle.

First aid Made Jan 13, 2023, sent to the company Jan 23, 2023, published by CPSC Feb 6, 2023
The product, in the report: GE Cafe 2-drawer dishwasher
GE Cafe 2-drawer dishwasher ripped out of cabinetry and fell on child. The installation instructions and design of this unit do not accommodate the weight of all the dishes in a drawer. The recommended installation is similar to typical dishwashers, which only needs to support the weight of the appliance door. There is a serious, life-threatening design defect with this model. A few tiny screws do not provide sufficient structural support for two dishwasher drawers full of dishes.

The product, in the report: GE Cafe dishwasher
The plastic wheels of the bottom rack of our dishwasher came off and came into contact with the heating coil. They then melted, burned and started smoking. The melted plastic also burned onto our dishes. When the dishwasher was opened to see what was happening, the burning plastic steam burned my wife’s face and eyes.

No one hurt Made Dec 28, 2015, sent to the company Jan 6, 2016, published by CPSC Jan 21, 2016
The product, in the report: GE Cafe Stainless Steel Dishwasher
The GE Cafe Stainless Steel Dishwasher was started before going to bed. The next morning my son awoke to the smell of burning plastic. Eventually he determined it was the dishwasher and turned off power via the circuit breaker. Many of the plastic items in the washer were melted. This included the utensil basket, parts of the spray arms and some of the plastic parts being washed such as spatula handles, cutting board and containers. The dishwasher is about 8 years old but this type of failure can be hazardous if no one is is around to mitigate the failure. The granite counter top above the dishwasher was so hot, it resulted in a complete box of chocolates being reduced to chocolate soup.

No one hurt Made Nov 2, 2012, sent to the company Nov 23, 2012, published by CPSC Dec 7, 2012
The product, in the report: GE Cafe Dishwasher Mod# CDW9380N20SS Serial# AR878151B
I purchased a GE Cafe dishwasher 4/8/11. I did not have any issues with this dishwasher until 1 1/2 yr later. On october 24, 2012 I ran a load of dish, just as I always do, around 5 pm. The settings on the dishwasher are never changed. Each load of dishes is ran on the same setting and always has been that way. The next morning, I got up to get my daughter a sippy cup out of the dishwasher and I touched the dishwasher and immediately pulled my hand back because it was so hot it almost burnt my hand. The outside of the stainless steel as well as the top of the granite were so hot you could not touch it. On the inside, the plastic cups in the dishwasher were melted. Now, I am not certain whether or not the dishwashers heating elemtent never turned off or whether it turned itself back on at some point in the night. Eitherway, it had become so hot it melted the cups inside. Luckily, we caught this issue before it spread smoke throughout the whole house. I contacted GE and they informed me that there was no recall on the dishwasher. I proceeded to do some research online and I found that both the GE cafe and the GE profile have had several reports of this same issue happening. Some families were unfortunate in the fact that their homes filled with smoke to the point they had to call companies to come out and treat to get the smoke smell out of their home. They received the same respones from GE as I did when I contacted them. They told me that they would fill out the paperwork and send it to their engineers but that they couldnt tell me what would happen with the information other than it would be reviewed and would not keep me updated on what they found out because they claim it to be proprietary information. Additionally, they told me that to their knowledge this dishwasher does not get hot enough to ignite a fire. I find it amazing that a company waits until a fire ignites to issue a recall on a product or a part for their product. They also told me that if I wanted to claim an injury or replacement of my dishes I could file an insurance claim. I am not interested. I’m more interested in the company fixing this problem so it doesn’t happen to other families. If my children had touched the front of the dishwasher before I knew what was going on it could have burnt their hands. I have 4 small children in my home. Furthermore, if my home had filled with smoke while we were sleeping because of this malfunction my children could have had smoke inhalation issues. Im not only concerned about my family but other families as well. Luckily, we purchased the extended service plan through Lowe’s when we bought the dishwasher. The company came out and looked at the dishwasher and they had to replace the computer board, they did that this morning. I am now currently running my first load of dishes since its been replaced. The dishwasher is a GE Cafe model # CDW 9380N20SS serial # AR878151B
Given the lack of response that I received from GE, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I again received a lack of response from a GE representative. I contacted my local news who told me to report this incident to this website.
