Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

Made Jan 12, 2016, sent to the company Jan 21, 2016, published by CPSC Feb 9, 2016

The product, in the report: Stainless steel disheasher

I am a consumer and have a GE dishwasher model # PDW9980N00SS. On 2 January 2016, I was awakened by a burnt plastic smell and smoke in the kitchen. It was emanating from our dishwasher. I immediately shut off the power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker. All of the plastic in the dishwasher was either deformed or completely melted. Even the basket that holds the silverware was melted. I spoke with GE and they sent out a technician, who then declared the appliance a total loss. GE then said that since the dishwasher was not on recall, they could only offer me a discount on a replacement. After a little research on my own, the internet revealed that this was a design flaw and that earlier models of the same dishwasher was under a recall. There are a plethora of stories of people being awaken the same way that I was as well as stories of the appliance catching fire. I find it negligent that anyone would continue to sell a design that was proven to be a safety hazard to the consumer and I am pleading for your help in this matter. It is my opinion that nothing short of a full replacement is due to me, since there does seem to be some level of negligence involved, and I am stunned that this device is not under a recall already. Maybe it is because your organization has not heard enough stories of failures, and if that is the case, then at least you have this one. Please look into this and let me know if I have any recourse and what action I can take.

The product, in the report: GE Dishwasher Plastic Tub/Stainless Exterior

General Electric dishwasher MOD#: GLD6860N00SS SER# DM776073B electrical fire melting wiring, plastic door components and plastic wiring connectors. The dishwasher was being used as directed by the manufacturer. Luckily we chose to run the dishwasher during the day while we were home. A burning electrical smell was noticed throughout the house and I discovered black smoke billowing from the dishwasher door. The 15 amp circuit breaker or any internal fuses failed to disconnect any electrical. I fear we could have had a structure fire as a result. Without further incident I turned off the circuit breaker and contacted the manufacturer’s hotline immediately. This particular model had a previous recall that we had repaired by a certified technician in 2012 for a faulty element that proves unrelated to this electrical fire. After replacing the entire dishwasher, I disassembled and took photographs of the electrical wiring behind the control panel in the door where the electrical fire occurred. The manufacturer has denied any reports of this particular problem. I have offered to send this General Electric dishwasher to the manufacturer for further research in the event this concern is happening to other General Electric dishwashers. My belief is a recall needs to be announced for control panel wiring so others may be as fortunate without incident.

The product, in the report: Dishwasher

Caller states that her dishwasher was new in her home when she purchased it in 2006, that it has only been used eight times in the twelve plus years she has lived there because it smoked from the very first time she used it in 2006.

She contacted the manufacturer in March 2006, service tech came out and replaced the timer.

She noticed slight smoke just afterward but continued using it thinking it was alright but the smoke became increasingly thicker.

She contacted the manufacturer the second time August 26th, 2006 and they again sent a tech to her home then replaced the timer.

She tried one or two times again to use the dishwasher, called the manufacturer again but was informed that she would be charged.

She stopped using the dishwasher then and never contacted them again until August 2012 when her model came up on a recall.

She contacted the manufacturer who advised her that her model beginning is shown on the release but not her serial number

then advised her to contact the CPSC Hotline.

The product, in the report: Profile Dishwasher

GE Profile Dishwasher upon finishing cycle controls showed finished. A couple of hrs. later a strong burning odor drifted through the house. Upon investigation discovered marble counter over dishwasher was too hot to touch and upon opening dishwasher discovered calrod unit (heating unit) was still on. Utensil holders, wheels on the racks and wash agitator were melted and laying on the base inside. Utensils were encased in lumps of plastic. The only way to shut off the calrod was to hit the breaker. I tried to contact GE and all I have received is the usual auto reply of received email and will get back to you. I would like to know if this problem has occurred before. Model PDW8280N00SS S/N TM853653B

The product, in the report: under the counter stainless stell

Within 8-10 minutes remaining in the wash setting, smoke began to pour from the control panel. The machine was placed on the wash setting with no heat dry which is approximately 45 minutes long.

The consumer powered the appliance in the off position and then shut off the circuit breaker. There were no damages that she noticed.

While doing some research on the internet she came across a recall (see Release # 11-022) where the hazard was water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector.

The firm was contacted on 1/30/2012 and the representative (name unknown) offered to send out a technician to take a look at the appliance and make necessary repairs if needed.

She also advised the representative about the recall she noticed online and was advised her model number was not affected. The consumer indicated that she fears the same hazard might occur again so she may cancel the service call.

The circuit breaker is still pulled in the off position, and the appliance has not been used since the day of the failure.

    GE is replacing dishwasher.
