The product, in the report: GE Dishwasher, Cafe Model, Model:CDW9380N00SS

My wife woke up last week to a smell of burning plastic and noticed that our dishwasher had overheated and melted from the inside out. She also burned herself on our granite counter top because of the excessive heat from the GE Dishwasher.

We contacted GE who sent out a technician who described to us that several other dishwashers (not our model) had been recalled for similar reasons. The heated dry mechanism just continues to run long after it should causing excessive heat.

Per the serviceman who came out 8/15/12 he stated “the relay stuck on the control board which made the heating element stay on.” He said it was similar to the recall but those were with plastic tubs (ours is stainless steel).

Per the recall notes, “An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a fire hazard”.

His notes and the recall notes are very similar and because of this I explained to GE that this model should also be recalled before something catastrophic happens to another household. They explained that they could discount the dishwasher for me if I decide on a replacement but they would not replace it. They also stated that they would not look into recalling this model because they had not been mandated by the CPSC.

Due to this reason, I thought it was necessary to contact the CPSC directly and file a formal complaint. I also spoke to [REDACTED], Compliance Officer with the CPSC, at [REDACTED] who also said to get a formal complaint down so that a representative from CPSC can come by and pick up our dishwasher. This will allow the engineers to examine the appliance to determine if a recall is warranted. [REDACTED] mentioned the next steps will be for a technician to call me to schedule a time to pick up the dishwasher.

I need assistance as soon as possible. the Model number is CDW9380N00SS and this is NOT an isolated incident as I found something similar on your website. See link to your website below. Thanks in advance for your time. My number is [REDACTED].
