The product, in the report: Battery-operated can opener. “TouCan” model. “World’s Easiest Hands-Free Can Opener!”

My wife and I recently received a battery-operated can opener as a gift. The design is such that it rests on top of the can and at the push of a button rotates around the top of the can. A blade slices through the edge of the top can seam separating the lid from the can. The opener is stopped at the second touch of the button and there is no automatic mechanism to stop the opener from rotating. On first use after stopping the opener, I pressed up on the lid with my thumb and received a needle-thin splinter of metal, drawing blood. On closer observation there were numerous, fine metal spines protruding from the cut edge of the can. I suspect they are caused wherever the cutting blade makes an additional pass over where it has previously cut. As there is no automatic stopping mechanism, the opener can make numerous circuits around the can before being manually stopped. These small metal slivers can easily be transferred to food removed from the can! I spoke with the elderly friend who gave us the opener; she had already identified the dangerous problem with the identical opener she had purchased. The product, in the report: Battery operated can opener (TouCan)

Bought the Toucan battery operated can opener. Put the 4 AA batteries in it. Pushed the button, but nothing happened. Reversed the batteries around several times, but nothing happened. I Could feel some warmth on the underside where the batteries were held, and kept trying to see if it would work. Decided to leave it alone on the counter and probably take it back to the store where we bought it. Finished eating dinner but could smell something that didn’t seem right. Went to the TouCan can opener and it was very hot. Lifted the cover and could see the paper on the battery lifting up. Afraid of an explosion, I took it outside and knocked the batteries loose.
