The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach sidecut can opener, Model: 76606AG, Series K3352SK

I was using a Hamilton Beach sidecut can opener, Model: 76606AG, Series K3352SK when I noticed that it was leaving very almost microscopic metal shards which are very sharp. I used this per their prescribed method of only letting the can go around one time. The first time I noticed it, I tried to take off what looked like a hair from the can and it was still attached and it cut my finger. When I did a trail run so I had evidence to turn into Hamilton Beach, a long piece did come off and landed on my counter (pictures available). Hamilton Beachs response was (available) was that it was most likely user error of letting the can go around more than once. My contention is: Sharp microscopic metal shards which can be ingested should not be allowed in the kitchen period, regardless of user error or not. What if the user is not able to read the instructions or hear the motor and let the can go around more than once. I barely could see that it was happening myself and don’t know how many chards me and my family may have ingested.

The product, in the report: This a Hamilton Beach can opener, model # 766067A. Series # F1622 EG. 120 v-60 Hz

I noticed that when I used my new hamilton-beach can opener, long, thin metal pieces came off the can and had the opportunity to get into the ingredients inside the can. They were the shape and size of a human hair, but metal from the can. When I contacted the manufacturer about the safety aspect of this and requested a refund, customer service replied that just going around the can once would prevent this from happening. That was not the case. I e-mailed them again last week and told them that even just going around the can once with the opener, the metal slivers still materialized. I again asked for a refund and they refused. I mentioned my safety concern. I wish that your agency would investigate this can opener and see if a recall is warranted.

The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach “SureCut” can opener. Electric can opener. Silver and black in color. 8 inches tall and 5 inches wide at base.

I attempted to file this report several weeks ago but the system dropped the report and I am resubmitting it. I bought a Hamilton Beach “SureCut” can opener and did not notice the danger immediately. When the cutter makes the cut it ripples the cut edge and leaves slivers of metal along the edge and some in the products. Products that my family and I ate. I was never aware of the dangers this product. There is no warning or safety notice on the box, literature or opener. I became aware of the issue a month ago when I was stuck by the slivers on a can. They stabbed my finger and did draw blood. I viewed the lid closer and found several slivers on it. I opened several more cans with the same result. I bought this in April, 2023 but did not realize the danger until recently. I only wonder if I have already consumed slivers of metal and did they do any damage to my body. I have used open cans of food for my family and now only can wonder if I placed any of them in this serious danger. I do NOT use this thing any longer. It poses an extreme threat and danger to consumers and should be recalled and destroyed. I went to Hamilton Beach about this problem on July 2, 2023 and they only offered to replace it with the same crap. I ask for another option and the person would not consider anything else. She simple wanted me to return it to them for further evaluation and send me the same exact unit as a replacement. I said that was not acceptable and decided to come here and ask for help with this problem. I said I would rather a handheld clear cut unit or even several hand crank units which would be a safer bet and the answer was no. I have arthritus and hand crank units are difficult for me but have always been safer. It is worth the pain. I mentioned I was going to file a complaint with www.saferproducts.gov and it went completely silent from them. That was July 6th, 2023. I have photos of the lids, slivers, and product. I confirmed that the slivers are metal with a magnet that would pick them out of the product and off the lids when detached. I noticed on the past other reports about Hamilton Beach can openers with similar issues that have been going on for years???? That concerns me greatly. They (Hamilton Beach) always say on their response on the reports that they take it very seriously and please keep reporting...but no solutions from them that I see. They just keep making the products without any real concerns for the consumers. Me personally, I URGE people not to purchase any can opener from Hamilton Beach for the safety of their family. That is my opinion. Their solution was to have me just send it to them for (“evaluation”) and exact replacement or nothing. How much evaluation do they require since similar problems have been ongoing for years????? Since July 6th, 2023, there has been no response from them at all. Now, I am hoping saferproducts.gov can work to resolve this issue. I worry about some child opening a can of spaghettis and eating a metal sliver and lord knows what may be the result. PLEASE someone stop this product.

The product, in the report: Electric can opener

Wife opened a can of Cranberry jelly, and while opening it, she noticed that there was a silver-wrinkly Metallic Shaving substance around the area where it was opened. Her husband hovered a magnet over these “hairs” and they magnetized and he was able to confirm that they were metal. He is concerned that his can opener is defective and is a danger due to metal ingestion. He assumes that his can opener is serrating extra shavings from the can itself. He would like to submit evidence in case investigation. He used three other cans and the same thing happened to the cans.

I have used this appliance for about 2 or 3 years. Last week while opening my canned corn some metal pieces shaved off. I went ahead and poured from the can thinking I could avoid getting any metal in my dish. However later when I opened one more can I cut my finger so decided to throw out the entire dish I was making. However, I had given part of it to friends and they ate it before I warned them to throw it out. They know to let me know if they have stomach or bowel problems. Needless to say I am worried about them. I saved 3 of the cans I opened for inspection if needed. It is a Hamilton Beach model # 76606. I think it needs to be recalled.

The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach can opener “Smooth Touch” Model 76607

Can opener does not open can on first rotation. Multiple rotations produces metal shavings. These cans must be discarded. The cutting wheel is worn and needs to be replaced. Hamilton Beach was contacted and said the wheel cannot be replaced on this model. It can be replaced with the removal of 6 cover screws and one set screw for the cutting wheel and remove the drive capstan. After calling Hamilton Beach 800-851-8900. I was told the cutting wheel was not replaceable and it was not repairable. I was given a code for a 40% discount on their web site. They would add $11.49 for shipping. This brings the total to around $33.

This product is $28 at Walmart. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Hamilton-Beach-Smooth-Touch-Can-Opener-Model-76606/5924593 Making the discount useless. It a shame that they will not sell new cutting wheels. It make this product disposable.

Users that do not see the metal shaving could be in trouble.

We have been using the Hamilton Beach SmoothTouch can opener MODEL: 76606Z for a couple of years.

It does not always cut through to allow you to uncover the can, which then prevents the consumption of your food. Even when it does open, frequently there are metal shavings/slivers which either fall into the food, or embed in your hands or fingers.

We finally bought a different brand can opener. We have kept the problem opener.

The product, in the report: Hamilton Beach Electric Can Opener

i purchases a Hamilton Beach electric can opener. I had only used it about a dozen times when recently it gave off thin small metal slivers which entered my fingers. Fortunately, I was able to get them out. When I wrote Hamilton Beach about this, this is a copy of our correspondence - see what they replied! I find this shocking and upsetting that they know it causes this problem.

Feedback - [REDACTED] Customer Service To Me Apr 21 at 5:42 AM Dear [REDACTED],

Thank you for your email. We apologize for any inconvenience or concern you may have experienced in using your can opener. How long have you had your appliance?

Generally, with this model, it may not be obvious that the can has been cut because the lid does not automatically lift off or separate as it would with a standard can opener. It should, however, only take one revolution to cut through the can. When using this unit, is the can spinning around more than one time? Metal slivers are generally a sign that the can is being rotated more than necessary. If this is not the case, please let us know.

Please do not discard your appliance.

Thank you again for contacting Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc. We look forward to helping you further.

Message: I have used this about a dozen times. Yesterday when I use it, it peeled off tiny thin slivers of the can it was opening which went into my fingers - fortunately not deeply. This is unbelievably dangerous. I will not use this product again nor do I want a replacement since I would never take a chance on it again! Can I get my money back ? You need to take this off the market before someone is seriously injured or ingests these slivers!

Hamilton Beach Electric can opener, model 76606

Can opener produces metal shavings that can enter the can being opened. The metal shavings would be injurious, possibly fatal, if ingested. I discovered them by cutting my fingers on the shavings. I have contacted Hamilton Beach, and they informed me that this can happen if the can makes more than one rotation in the opener. This happens frequently, as the opener often does not work on the first rotation. Hamilton Beach acknowledges the problem, but has not offered a solution. They were unable or unwilling to advise me of an opener that they made that would not produce metal shavings.

Some time after purchasing the Hamilton Beach model76606 electric can opener (over a year) it started to require more than one turn around a can and now will not open a can at all. Also, as it was failing to cut it would track differently on multiple turns and shave off fine metal turnings that clung to the can and the opener mechanism.

The metal shavings are at great risk of getting into the food and since the can be very fine could be ingested without the consumers knowledge. I can attest to their ability to puncture flesh since I got a sliver in my finger as I was disassembling the unit to discover what the problem was.

I discovered that the cutting wheel edge was completely worn down. In my opinion it was not properly tempered to stand up to normal household service for any reasonable length of time.
