The product, in the report: Air Crazy West Bend Model 82419P Hot Air Popper
I was using the Air Crazy West Bend popcorn popper when a hole formed in the side of the device due to it melting through the plastic. There was a smell of something melting (rubber?) at the same time. At the time, I was popping popcorn and it was not running for very long (maybe 4 minutes). The smell has happened a few times before while popping popcorn but this was the first time an actual hole has formed in the side of the popper. It may be related to a bit of popcorn that got stuck in the one of the metal air holes in the opening where the un popped popcorn is deposited. I tried to remove it and some fell into the interior of the machine. That was a while back. I used the machine many times since and it usually worked as normal.

The product, in the report: Air popper started on fire. Plastic melted. Inhaled chemicals. Slight burn to fingers. TCIN: 15110678 UPC: 072244824186 Store Item Number (DPCI): 072-04-0104
I purchased a West Bend Air Crazy Popcorn machine from Target in Lakeville MN in November 2017. After using it for the first time, it started on fire. I returned it to the store. I went to Target.com to submit an online project review and saw that this air popper has started on fire for several other people. See link below. Target continues to sell it for the past year even with this danger.

The product, in the report: West Bend Air Crazy 4-quart Popcorn Popper, Red Model# 82418R Dimensions: 13.3”L x 13.3”W x 7.8”H
I was using the West Bend Air Crazy 4-quart Popcorn Popper as directed. The plastic on the safety shield bubbled and melted, making it no longer fit the machine. This, in combination with alarmingly high air speed, also causes very hot un-popped popcorn kernels to shoot out at the user. This could cause severe burns from either touching the safety shield or being struck with a kernel.

The product, in the report: West Bend 82418R Air Crazy Hot Air Popcorn Popper
West Bend 82418R Air Crazy Hot Air Popcorn Popper: I bought this appliance a little over a week ago. On the third use, it started to screech while my wife was using it and she turned it off. I turned it on again to see if I could detect the problem, and it started to screech and smoke. I turned it off and unplugged it. A few minutes later, it burst into flames.
I sent emails describing my experience with this product to both Target (where I bought this product) and West Bend (the manufacturer). Afterwards, I found a number of related complaints in reviews posted on Amazon.com, prompting this email to Consumer Protection. The experience reported below, by [REDACTED], is similar to my experience, although my popper actually burst into flames. Had I not been close by, the results could have been disastrous.
Motor burnt out during third use, March 5, 2015 By [REDACTED]” (Chicago, IL, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: West Bend 82418R Air Crazy Hot Air Popcorn Popper (Kitchen) We bought this at Target as an impulse buy. It seemed all right at first, lightweight, easy to use, fast. During the third use, it made a horrible screeching noise. I turned it off and on a few times, then I noticed smoke coming out of the top and bottom; the motor was burning out. It’s going back to Target.

The product, in the report: West bend air crazy popcorn popper model 82419
West Bend air crazy popcorn popper. Used about 6 times. During the last use the fan stopped but the appliance continued to heat thus making this a fire hazard. I wrote to the company and they did respond with a new one. This time it did not even finish the first use before the fan stopped but the heat continued and the popcorn started to burn before I could shut it off. This is a definite fire hazard.

I bought a popcorn popper today from target. I took it out of the box, assembled the top, and turned it on. It became hot inside (was red), and started smoking from the top and the bottom. the metal popcorn holder inside wasn’t rotating like normal. I unplugged the machine before it caught fire.

The product, in the report: West Bend AIR CRAZY Hot Air Popcorn Popper
I bought the West Bend AIR CRAZY Hot Air Popcorn Popper and turned it on for the first time for about 5 seconds when it started smoking so I turned it off and reread the instructions, which say that the first time you turn it on, “...A small amount of smoke and/or odor may occur...” I decided to try turning it on again and maybe the smoke would go away but this time it started smoking heavily so I unplugged it and ran to put it outside where I then noticed it was on fire, so I filled a pan with water and poured it on the popper to put out the fire.
