The product, in the report: WinGuard Single Hung Aluminum Window
I was cleaning the window sill. The window hold up device failed and the heavy aluminum window made by PGT Industries 1070 Industry Drive Nokomis, Florida 34275. I was unabe to get my left hand out of the way and the window slammed on top of the back of my hand. It required a trip to the ER and nine stitches. I believe the design is flawed and that the manufacturer knowing installed a product in an environment where the mechanism would fail. The spiral portion of the mechanism appears to be a non corrosive material however the hardware that fastens to the window appears to be standard hardware. That standard hardware has been compromised due to weather and rusted and broke away. The windows are installed in a condominium. I have 4 out of 8 windows in my unit have the same issue. The building has approximately 30 units and there are over 20 buildings in the complex. Other owners have told me that they are having similar issues with their windows. Here is what I believe is negligence on the manufacturers part. They know their product is going to be installed in a corrosive environment yet: A. They use material that will corrode. B. Their warranty disclaims any highly corrosive environments. C. They market the product as “WinGuard” and Coastal. This further implicates that they know the product will be in a corrosive environment. Several emails with the company failed to result in a resolution.
