The product, in the report: Simonton windows. Double hung. Wood grain finish. “SFI Vinyl Windows (RSW)**”
Double-hung windows were installed in attic windows. The windows have fake woodgrain which includes a strip of plastic covering the channel where the windows slide up and down. Two months after installation, there was a big windstorm. One of the windows blew in, folding down like they fold when being cleaned. When trying to get the window to latch closed, another gust blew the window in again, hitting me in the face and breaking my nose. I had the installer out the following week and asked him to make sure the windows latch. When I pointed out that the latch was not engaging fully in the channel, he removed the latch, shaved some plastic off, and then it worked. The following week, an inspector came and when I told him what happened, he told me that it is because of the strip of fake woodgrain over the channel. It makes it so the latch doesn’t always catch properly. He told me he often needs to shave some plastic off. So this tells me it is a defect in the design, and the installers are using a workaround to make sure the latch sticks. We found this same issue on 6 windows in my house. I have reported it multiple times to the store but they have not stopped selling these windows.

The product, in the report: The product is a pvc framed double hung window installed in a newer home. Similar incidents have occurred on other windows in my home. The defect appears to be screws that hold the balance mechanism to the frame are too small and the force of the heavy springs pull them out of the plastic frame. See photo. The manufacturer replaces the broken mechanisms under warranty but provides the same undersized screws with the replacement parts and they are not acceptable. This is a complicated issue that most homeowners would be unable to diagnose and should require appropriate warnings and/or replacement of screws to the proper size. The sash is extremely heavy and could cause injury.
Several double hung windows in my home failed due to balance mechanism failure. In one case the heavy sash which was in the open position came crashing down. This could have caused significant injury to a child near the window.
