The product, in the report: Hardware used with Tilt-turn window manufactured by G-U Hardware. Company name is G-U Yapi of Turkey. Distributor is G-U Hardware Inc of Newport News, VA. The fittings referenced that need to be replaced are a Side-hung sash hinge and a Tilt-turn stay arm.
10 years ago, I purchased a [REDACTED] coop and decided to put in new windows, “Tilt and Turns”. I was told they were German windows thought I am not sure this was accurate. About 4 years ago, I was in my bedroom and one of the windows literally fell out of the frame and onto the bed. I rolled over quickly and thank God. The window weighs over 300 pounds and could have easily killed me. I could not even lift it (and I am strong). I have these windows throughout my apartment. I called my window company, Skyline Windows, and they said they had never heard of this happening before. They came to my apartment a day later and “repaired” it. I assumed it was some sort of fluke but it scared me, because the window is massive and heavy (I would say it is 3 feet by 6 feet) and it must weigh over 300 pounds. About 1-1/2 months ago I received a note from Skyline Windows about a safety recall. The Safety Recall Notice refers to aluminum fittings on tilt-turn windows. It describes the problem, “The window fittings can break. This can cause the window to fall, posing an injury hazard to consumers”. The recall is dated November 28, 2012, but I have only been notified 1-1/2 months ago. I immediately contacted the manufacturer, using both the email and phone number they offered. I received an email from them basically stating that they will come out when they have a relevant number of consumers to make the trip worth their while. I am concerned for my safety, as well as that of my pets in the apartment. A month has passed and I they have not contacted me about scheduling an appointment. I paid a lot of money for these windows, over $20K, but more importantly, there is a safety issue and I have already had an incident. I hope you can help.
