The product, in the report: Anderson 400 Series Casement Window
The product is a casement window supposedly designed for coastal conditions. The window was open approximately 6”. I turned the crank to close it, however the window swung open all the way and came off its tracks and hinges. I managed to grab the movable window part before it came off completely and fell to the ground (approximately 14’ below). With help, my friend and I were able to secure the window from falling (with steel picture frame wire), but it was hanging 2” off the frame. A contractor came the next day. Standing on a scaffold, he managed to re-install the window. My arm was injured and bleeding. It still has not completely healed. I took photographs of everything, which I can supply. The manufacturer, Anderson Windows, sent a representative and a technician. The told me the window was perfect. the technician told me privately that he has seen many windows of this Andersen type completely blow out of the frame if not closed and latched.

The product, in the report: CIG-2 3-89 Permashield Narroline windows
The consumer stated that the window in his family room exploded. The consumer heard a loud pop. The consumer examined the window and he stated that the inside of the window has shattered completely. The consumer stated that the glass shattered up to 1 ft from the window. The consumer stated that this was the seventh incident that happened with these windows
I spoke with Anderson Windows several times over the last few years. The last call 2/6/17. The rep informed me that they felt this was a negative pressure problem with windows of this era (1989 - Permashield Narroline). The first explosion happened in September 2001 (Andersen replace under warranty). The second did not occur until 2012 (no warranty coverage - outside 20 year window). The 3rd -7th explosions occurred in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 (one per year). The seventh occurred 2/4/2017. All of the windows were upstairs - I understand this is outside the warranty but seven exploding windows seems excessive..

No one hurt Made Nov 10, 2014, sent to the company Nov 21, 2014, published by CPSC Dec 8, 2014
The product, in the report: Andersen Windows, quarter round, CIG-2 3-92, High Performance, 19.5”
I heard a loud noise while in my kitchen -- it sounded like something very heavy hitting the floor -- when I looked up I saw that my quarter-round Andersen window had exploded. I went outside to see if maybe a bird had flown into the window; no bird, just glass fragments on the ground. The other quarter round window had shattered months earlier, but I assumed it was due to bird or something, although again I didn’t find one (the first incident occurred while I was at work so I didn’t hear it). I contacted Andersen windows and they told me that the windows were out of warranty but I could purchase replacement panes at a steep price. We purchased our home a year and a half ago and these windows were manufactured and presumably installed in 1992. I’m very concerned that additional windows will explode. So far, both times, the exploding panes have been on the outside, but the glass fragments in my back yard are very dangerous and hard to find (not tempered glass). I have a child and a dog who play outside and I am concerned for their safety and for our own. We have Andersen windows all over our house -- each one now seems to be a ticking time bomb and the manufacturer, Andersen, has offered us no remedy except that we must pay dearly for the replacement of these defective products one by one, after they explode and possibly injury us. We were quoted a price of over $800 to replace the defective panes - without the cost of labor.

The consumer stated that he had the blinds down which prevented the glass from exploding everywhere.
The consumer stated that this was the first incident of the 4 incidents that happened with these windows
The consumer spoke with a Supervisor at Anderson Windows on January 6-7, 2014. He informed the consumer that they felt they all exploded due to expansion around the window, but the consumer explained that the sashes moved up and down freely without difficulty. There was no structural pressure on the window. The temperature was similar to previous years. If there was compression on one window, why did none of the other windows, beside and below, not explode like this window at the same time. In this incident, the top sash exploded but luckily the blind was half way down and prevented the glass from being thrown directly forward into the room.

No one hurt Made Nov 14, 2011, sent to the company Mar 22, 2012, published by CPSC Apr 5, 2012
The product, in the report: window double hund -- narrow -- 36x24
On 11/08/2011 the consumer said that while he was in bed around 8:00 am he and his wife heard a loud explosion coming from the hallway. When the consumer went out his bedroom he found out that the window in the hallway had shattered into larges and tiny pieces. There were pieces of the glass everywhere.
The consumer expressed his concern with the safety of the glass exploding. He indicated that he or his wife could have possibly been close to the window been seriously injured by the glass exploding. The consumer also indicated that this his second window exploded from the same Mr. Mfr.
Consumer called and explained incident to mfr’s rep., (name unknown) who said that his 20 years warranty window had expired.
No injuries were reported. CONSUMER ADDED: Enclosed please find three pictures of the window whcih exploded spontaneously. Two of the pictures show a can of furniture polish which was left on the window stool the day before the incident. The force of the explosion was sufficient to cause the can to be heard to rock back and forth and glass fragment to be scattered several feet from the window.
Although there were no injuries during the spontaneous explosion, a child passing by would likely have had facial lacerations and possible loss of sight. The manufacturer did send a technician who took remedial measures on the remaining windows in the house. It is however my opion that these measures hsould have been preventative rather than after the explosion. Please feel free to contact me. Regards, [REDACTED]
