The product, in the report: Diamond Matches/300 count/large kitchen matches

I purchased a box of Diamond Large Kitchen Matches. When I struck a match it flared, the best way I can describe it was like a back fire. The box was closed and I stuck the match away from me but a particle flared back in my direction and caused the front of my sweater to catch fire. I immediately beat the flames with my hands (no harm was done to my hands). I have used Diamond kitchen matches for years, specifically to light my wood stove and for candles. I was really surprised and thought I should report it. These matches are in a box of 300 count and on the box it says they are made in Chile. To dispose of these matches I soaked them in water before putting them in the trash. I hope you are able to look into this problem. Thank you.

The product, in the report: Strike Anywhere Matches, Large Kitchen Matches

On the morning of Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025, I brought down the box of diamond Strike Anywhere Matches, 300, Large Kitchen Matches, from above our stove. I was going to light the burner. (Sometimes, the burner does not light when I turn the knob . . .) I opened the box of matches. I found every match in the box was already burned- at least all the matches that were facing in the same direction!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think, since all the matches were at the tippity top of the box, the friction when I last used a match and shut up the box, a match was lit, UNBEKNOWNST to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (That happened sometime within this past month.) Luckily, the fire went out, since there was not enough oxygen to keep the fire going. The fire was contained within the single box. The next layer was black with soot, at the top inner edge. I will be calling “diamond” on Monday. The matches are made in Chile. The matches are distributed by Royal Oak Enterprises in Georgia. I think the box needs to hold less matches, to avoid future mishaps. (Our house could have burned down.)

The product, in the report: strike anywhere matches.

The tips of Diamond Strike Anywhere Matches, with the ‘Greenlight’ marketing OFTEN break up when striking on the box strike pad, and send the flaming tip several feet. This happens probably to over half the matches I strike. I believe it is because Diamond is using an inferior and weaker wood. The ‘greenlight’ marketing says “wood for this product comes from responsibly managed FSC-certified forests”. But as a forester myself, I know that fast grown wood often is weaker. I bought a 3-pack of these matches, which I have been using for the past two years, and they ALL have this problem. This problem doesn’t exist with their regular large kitchen matches. I cited today’s date as the most recent bad experience with these matches, but its happened hundreds of times before. Knowing of the problem, I always am vigilent when using these, but my concern is with others who may not be so careful.

Using poorly made and unsafe kitchen matches. They are constantly breaking while I’m striking them on the box. Frequently, large broken and burning splinters and fragments are flying in my face and?or across the room. Last night a burning fragment flew across the room and landed on top of a power fixture and cord. They have several times flown back at my face and eyes.

The product, in the report: Diamond greenlight large kitchen wooden matches. 300 count. FSC C001561 (the most recent incident)

On several occasions over the course of the past two years, when striking Diamond brand wooden matches (from several different boxes purchased at various stores), the lighted match head has flown across the room because the match snaps in two during the lighting process. This morning it caught the plastic liner of my drawer on fire. These matches should be regulated. The wood in them is not strong enough to withstand the normal force of striking them. On several other occasions the lighted match heads have shot across my kitchen when I tried to light my gas range or to light candles during power outages.

The product, in the report: Product name: Diamond Greenlight matches, both the strike-on-box and strike-anywhere variety.

The new so-called “Greenlight” Diamond brand strike-on-box and strike-anywhere matches are an extremely unsafe product. I don’t know if they are using less wood or if the wood is a poor quality, but the matches are extremely breakable. We have often found matches in the box that are barely in one piece. Some of them were far too thin to strike without snapping; fortunately we examined them and threw them away, but someone could easily have been injured if they weren’t paying attention. Many times, upon striking a match, the flaming heads have snapped off and flown across the room. One started to burn the wood of my dresser until I threw water on it. Another landed in a pile of clothes and could easily have started a fire. Another actually landed on my head, singed my scalp, and started to burn my hair. These incidents happened with multiple different boxes.

The product, in the report: Wooden strike anywhere matches

I have used Diamond Brand “Strike Anywhere) matches for decades to light fires in the woodstove that heats my home. Matches in the last few boxes I’ve purchased (now known as Diamond “Greenlight” matches) have frequently broken and/or failed to ignite when struck. This has been a major annoyance (to have to use three or four matches to start a fire, when one used to do it), and now I’ve discovered it is a life-threatening problem.

On January 17, 2013, as I struck a match, it broke, the tip flipped up and over my head, ignited in the air, and landed on the floor about six feet behind me. Fortunately, the house did not burn down and I did not die, although either or both could easily have happened. Unfortunately, in the few seconds it took me to realize what had happened, the match burned a hole in, and ruined, my previously unblemished Berber carpet.

Clearly, Diamond Greenlight Strike Anywhere matches are unsafe and will kill people. I contacted the distributor, Jarden Home Brands, of Daleville, Indiana to make them aware of the situation - they predictably ignored my letter.

Please BUST this company and get this lethal junk off the market before somebody dies.

Diamond Greenlight Wooden Matches. Box of 300. Twice now I’ve had the match break in half when I strike it. The lit end goes flying! Once it missed my roll of paper towels by an inch. The second time I could not readily find it but I continued to smell that the match had indeed lit. I panicked until I found it on the carpet, but luckily the flame was out. I’ve used wooden matches for years, these do not perform like all the others.
