  1. No one hurt

Made Nov 8, 2018, sent to the company Nov 19, 2018, published by CPSC Dec 4, 2018

The product, in the report: Product is a green inflatable spider with orange eyes and an orange hourglass shape on its back. Product was purchased from Walmart in Lake Geneva, WI in 2017. Product was a floor model. Product is illuminated with LED lighting internally. The lighting is constant. The 2018 models appear to have changed this from constant lighting to a type of projection marketed as “fire and ice” or “phantasm”. No identifying marks could be found on the product, other than the manufacturer shown as Gemmy Industries. The following was found online: Walmart lists the product on their website (as of Nov 2018): https://www.walmart.com/ip/52027664 The Walmart part number on their website is #555267267. Gemmy Industries model number is 72147. UPC is 0 86786 72147 6. Description is Gemmy Airblown Inflatable 3.5’ X 11.5’ Giant Neon Green Spider Halloween. On the electrical cord connected to the product, the safety label includes the information: Conforms to UL Std. 588 Item No. 72147 For indoor and outdoor use. 04/2016 ZaiXing Electronic(Shenzhen)Co., Ltd. Intertek 4002678

The inflatable spider halloween decoration was placed in the front lawn. It was plugged into an extension cord and connected to a timer on the front porch. Both the timer and extension cord are UL-listed for outdoor applications.

At approximately 3:00pm on Halloween, 2018, the timer turned on three inflatable decorations. Each decoration was connected separately and had been operating in this fashion for about 2 weeks.

When the spider began to inflate, the bottom of the decoration started to smoke. A house guest immediately unplugged the spider, turned it over, and stomped out part of the material that had started to burn.

There are char marks on the fan grille indicative of where the source of heat started, there are holes burned in the decoration material around the perimeter of the fan grille, and there is a scorch mark in the grass directly under where the decoration had been placed. Some of the plastic at the base of the decoration is also deformed due to heat stress.

The decoration was unplugged within seconds of turning on, as the remaining two decorations had not had time to inflate yet. Had a guest not been present outside by chance, the damage would not have been contained as quickly.
