The product, in the report: torch-like lighter left behind by a roommate Black body, with red button that turns. Yellow sticker marks direction with arrow pointing to on and off directions. Words “on” and “off” are written on sticker. Silver barrel. “Scorch Torch” is written on left side between red button and silver barrel. small rectangular red button to turn flame off under barrel. Sits on round base that contains the numbers and letters listed below.
I wasn’t using the product exactly. I was filling a lighter up with butane because It was out last time I tried to use it. I brought the butane into the bathroom to where the lighter was left several days ago but never filled it. I was on the toilet and decided to fill it.
I was filling the lighter and all i know is suddenly my face was engulfed in flames. It happened fast. The victims of “The Ghost ship” flashed in my head as I threw the lighter and butane down. I smelled burnt hair. The fluid was still exiting the can but I dont remember if i saw flames still. I was patting myself to make them stop in my hair but there weren’t any on the tile with the lighter or the butane. I don’t know for sure. I was concentrating on my face and body. I do know that after I realized I was not burning up and i was still alive I heard the butane coming out of the can and picked it up. The trigger or spout was jammed. I just threw the can back down. I knew it was almost empty anyway and it was shooting out fast. The lighter is still on the floor in the bathroom with the can of butane. I’m scared to go in there. I know that is stupid.
My face feels hot. Like a bad sunburn and my hands too. I don’t think I have all my eyebrows or eyelashes but I’m afraid to look I smell like burnt hair .I should go to the hospital maybe but I am shaking too bad and don’t want to drive. I messaged a couple friends but they are sleeping.
It sounds like the fluid can is at fault but the lighter has a feature that it doesn’t turn off unless you push a button. I forgot that last week after lighting a candle. I went outside for about 6 or 7 minutes and when I came in I heard the lighter that i left on the counter. I also smelled burning. My kitchen counter was burning and just barely starting to smoke. it could have been real bad. I poured water on the laminate but there is a huge burn mark. I know I should have got rid of and reported the lighter then.
A person can’t tell if the lighter is still on because it isn’t always visible when the flame is burning. (since writing this report, I went to get the lighter and can to fill out product information. The fluid can tip is melted which is why it wouldn’t shut off, I believe.)
