  1. First aid

Made May 21, 2014, sent to the company May 30, 2014, published by CPSC Jun 13, 2014

The product, in the report: EVERSTRYKE MATCH: A small keychain size lighter (resembling a flask type style) which has a small plastic reservoir for lighter fluid and the match is a metal pin which screws into the reservoir and has a fabric wick attached to a metal striker. The plastic reservoir has a rod like flint embedded on the side. To operate, you unscrew the match from the reservoir and strike the match on the side of the reservoir to ignite the fluid soaked wick.

EVERSTRYKE MATCH: I rec’d this product on 5/20/14 via USPS. It was ordered from an online advertisement from a company called SURVIVAL LIFE at survivallife.com. They advertised this product as “free” and you just had to pay the shipping cost.

I opened the envelope containing the product which came with a sheet of instructions. There was no product name or serial numbers on the product nor any manufacturing data. I read the instructions and followed them precisely. As I attempted to light the product, fuel spilled from the product reservoir and the spark from lighting the match ignited the fuel which had also spilled on my hand. Flames appeared on my left hand and fingers. I dropped the product to extinguish the flames on my hand. After the flames on my hand were extingquished I noticed that the lighter, that had been thrown down was engulfed in flames. I tried stamping the fire out with my foot but it would not extinguish. I then fetched a cup of water from a nearby sink and poured the water on the product which finally extinguished. The plastic on the product had melted to the point that the product was no longer usable. I sustained some minor first degree burns on my left hand and fingers.
