The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Emergency room

Made Apr 19, 2015, sent to the company Apr 27, 2015, published by CPSC May 11, 2015

The product, in the report: Easy-Lite C12F. (The “I” is actually a stylized flame making it a logo of sorts.) The following numbers appeared below the bar code label: 3 6586000501. This is a common disposable butane lighter.

My adult daughter was lighting a candle with a disposable butane lighter when the metal wrap around the valve assembly exploded away from the valve assembly itself and the lighter spewed flaming liquid butane onto her hand, a couch and the floor. Luckily, she was able to extinguish the fires on the couch and the floor, but she did sustain serious second degree burns to her hand requiring immediate medical treatment at an emergency room.

The lighter bore the following markings: Easy-Lite C12F (where the “I” in “Lite” is actually a stylized flame rather than the letter). It also had the numbers 3 6586000501 below the bar code on the label.

We were lucky. This product failure could have resulted in a major house fire along with potential blindness and severe facial scaring.

I have multiple digital photos of the lighter (post explosion) and the burns my daughter sustained to her hand. I hope to be able to attach a few to this submission, but if I can’t, and the photos would assist CPSC, then please send me an email, and I will attach them to the return email address you provide.54
