From: [REDACTED] Subject: Extremely hazardous lighter. Date: 2/21/15

    Dear sir:

I am reporting a lighter which is 5 to 6 inches tall and is round with a diameter of about 1 1/2 inches. It’s made of plastic and looks a mini torch.

I purchased a few “Micro Torch” lighters that I use as cigar lighters. They look like the type of lighter a chef would use. After I put butane fuel into them, and as I tried to light one, the fuel would spit/shoot out (unlighted) of the valve where it wold normally ignite a flame. The fuel would shoot several feet away. If I was lucky enough to have the lighter ignite, the flame would become so huge, it seemed as though it was going to explode. I found the only way to operate the lighter normally is to put as little butane fuel into the lighter as possible. However, there is no way to tell or gauge how much fuel a person puts into these lighters. Additionally. if there is an open flame nearby when one attempts to ignite an overfilled lighter, when the unlit fuel shoots out, it could possibly ignite and then it will cause a fire or worse burn a person or even a child standing nearby. Of the three “Micro Torch” lighters I purchased they all have this uncontrolled problem.

Other similar lighters like this have a special valve built into the components of the lighter to prevent the butane fuel from spilling out as described above, a reverse pressure valve if you will.

I’ve been in the cigar business for many years and I am very familiar with lighters. I also repair lighters so I am aware of the components normally contained inside a lighter. This “Micro Torch” lighter is an accident waiting to happen. Somebody will be hurt if this lighter is not immediately recalled.

I purchased these lighters from a chain named, “Harbor Freight Tools” The store I purchased my lighters from is located at 1196 E Main st, El Cajon, Ca. 92021 (619) 441-3771.

The lighter is packaged as “Micro Torch” Chicago Electric Welding. All the lighters are bright orange in color. Store item #60645 Distributed by Harbor Freight Tools, Camarillo, CA. Made in China Bar code # is 7 92363 60645 5

I am available any time if someone would like to contact me. Sincerely, [REDACTED].
