The product, in the report: It was blue and approximately 10 inches long. I have several pictures of it after it exploded but so far I don’t see a place to attach them .

We were barbecuing and a brand new Scripto Lighter was sitting about 2 feet away from the grill in a dish when suddenly exploded! It broke into bits and looked like it had melted and felt very hot when we picked it up. It sounded like someone was popping the cork on a champagne bottle when it happened. If someone had been standing closer it definitely could have severely injured them!

The product, in the report: purple plastic handle, black metal round “barrel” coming out where the flame to light the candle is supposed to come out the end. The plastic is now melted from it bursting into flame on the handle.

I used the Scripto brand lighter. I caught on fire on the barrel and I flung it away from me to avoid getting burned. It burned my carpet in several places before I was able to kick it to my tile. I stomped it and it kept burning until I guess it was out of fuel. Scary.

The product, in the report: 7 pack of Scripto lighters by Calico brands

On 6-23-16 I purchased a pack of 7 pack of Scripto lighters while shopping at Walmart in Princeton, Minnesota. On 6-30-16 at about 10 pm I used one of the lighters out of this package to burn a wood tick I found crawling on me and then set the lighter down on a microwavable plate on top of our countertops. A few minutes later my wife and I heard a loud pop sound. I got up out of bed and while leaving my bedroom I heard a loud “whoosh” sound. I ran to the kitchen area and found that the lighter I had used a few minutes earlier had burst into flames! It burned through the plate it was on and started the countertop on fire! I was able to extinguish the fire with a bath towel. On 7-14-16 I sent certified mail copies of receipt, photos of damage and estimates for new countertops to both Walmart and the CEO of Calico brands [REDACTED]in Ontario, CA. On 8-25-16 Walmart had their claims department sent me a letter explaining that Calico brands would be responsible for the claim and to contact [REDACTED] at [REDACTED]. I then mailed all of the information to [REDACTED]. I received two phone calls after this from Calico brands employees. I believe I spoke to [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. In one of the phone calls it was requested that I mail the burnt up lighter, packaging and remaining lighters to Calico brands to have them looked at for flaws. I was never contacted back regarding the defective lighter. I am very concerned for the safety of others regarding these lighters. It should be noted that Calico brands has not sent the defective lighter back to me which was agreed on. I would like this lighter to be looked at by an outside agency.

The product, in the report: Blue lighter

I keep a lighter in my car, stored in the ashtray. On 4/19/2016, as soon as I opened the car door, there was loud pop, some smoke and slight sulfur smell. The Scripto lighter, previously in the ashtray, was in pieces on the passenger side floor, and the metal top piece was hot and on the passenger seat. No injuries or damage, but small plastic pieces were scattered around the front of the car.
